This is the best musical movie I've ever seen! I especially love that Joe Cocker has a small cameo in it! This is the kinda movie you can watch over and over again! I absolutely love it and so does my boyfriend, so I bought this for his birthday!! :D
Received a bonus, along with high-quality value and delivery!!! I was thrilled to receive not only the DVD I ordered, but another great DVD I wanted and didn't own as well!
I knew I wanted to purchase this DVD as sson as I saw this movie. I received this movie as a gift for my birthday. I love the music. I love the entertainment. I am a romantic at heart. Fast shipping. I am looking forward to many viewings.
Can't add any more to the plot or feelings generated by this movie and would like to add the Joe Cocker cameos and snipets of songs not used ("she came in thru the bathroom window")as witty, fun and entertaining. If you know any of their songs, old or newer, you will enjoy this film.
Awsome movie, we Borrowed it from a friend and ended up purchasing it for ourselves! This movie brought back so many memories, really enjoyed it, went through every possible emotion.
This is one of my favorite movies and I highly recommend it to any Beatles fan or any musical fan. This is a timeless story that everyone can enjoy abouy the price of war and the cost of love in the lives of early american adolescence.
This movie is simply amazing. If you like The Beatles even a little bit, then you would love this movie. it follows the story of a multitude of characters whose lives all get intertwined in the 1960's vietnam era. All the songs are beatles songsw performed by the cast of brilliant actors and actresses. I strongly recommend you try this title.
Best movie ever. Amazing celebration and explorationj of The Beatles and how they evolved through time. I didnt even like the Beatles before this movie. A def must see.
I didn't think that I would like a movie like this but I gave it a chance because I am a Beatles fan and I was curious how they would do the music. I am Sam has a Beatles soundtrack as well and I enjoy the music in it. Having watched the movie though, I found the concept of incorporating the songs into the telling of the story very interesting as well as other features that are part of Beatle history. The music is well done and I bought the soundtrack CD so I can enjoy it anytime.
Julie Taymor and her band of magicians have created not only the ultimate Musical film in Filmdom...they have re-defined the medium with the most complete and unique presentation in the realm of Film making. They utilize elements from every facet of theatre, music, film, mime, and dancing, taken beyond the efforts of mere mortals... combined into to new multilevels of emotional, visual and sociological depths seldom attained. A TRUE MUST SEE and MUST OWN
The Beatles' songs may have provided the soundtrack for the lives of those coming of age in the 1960s, but their extensive catalogue acts as the literal soundtrack in this romantic musical from visionary director Julie Taymor. Newcomer Jim Sturgess stars as Jude, a young man working on the docks in Liverpool. Eager to escape, he travels to Princeton where he meets Max (Joe Anderson). But it's his meeting with Max's younger sister Lucy (Evan Rachel Wood) that changes him. They quickly fall in love, but their relationship is tested by the chaos of the late 1960s and Max's unwilling tour in Vietnam. Throughout the film, characters burst into classics from the Beatles: frat boys sing "With a Little Help from My Friends," while Uncle Sam bursts from a recruitment poster with strains of "I Want You (She's So Heavy)." U2's Bono makes a cameo as a counterculture leader and croons "I Am the Walrus," and actor-comedian Eddie Izzard provides a trippy rendition of "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite." Sturgess has the voice, charm, and good looks to fill Shea Stadium with hordes of screaming young women. As Jude, he's earnest and certainly capable of carrying the film. Wood capably balances Lucy's naiveté and knowledge, easily moving between her love for Jude and her passion for her cause. Though the performances are strong, it's Taymor's gifted direction that makes ACROSS THE UNIVERSE so fascinating to watch. As in FRIDA and Broadway's THE LION KING, she proves herself an artist with creativity few can match. Director of photography Bruno Delbonnel also deserves praise for his contribution to the striking visuals. He has worked with Jean-Pierre Jeunet on AMELIE and A VERY LONG ENGAGEMENT, and he brings the same sense of romance and whimsy to this unique musical.
I viewed this in the theatre and it was very emotional for me. My father had been in vietnam and I grew up looking at the hippy generation as a child. This is a movie that would be very appreciated by my generation and may bring out more emotion and feeling from older generation. If you are willing to feel an intense and emotional explosion then this video must be viewed on a large screen with surround sound. Or in the theatre. The small screen does it no justice unless you are a beetles fan and are pre occupied with dishwashing.
When I first saw this DVD in a video rental store, I ignored it, thinking it would be a bad boring movie. To my pleasant surprise, it's an excellent musical story whose momentum is based on some songs of the Beatles. They are vibrantly sung by the actors in the movie. The story and the songs are interwoven well, as the story follows the lives of some characteristic people in the world of the 1960's. I was there, and can say that the film is artistically honest. It's a well-constructed, well-acted theatrical film with beautiful scenes and sets and it's a lot of fun for people of all ages. I just bought a copy for my nephew who is about to begin college.
Love the music . . . classic Beatles tunes! Sweet story. Will watch it over and over. Can sing along with the whole sound track since these songs are from "my era". Thanks!
This is really a good movie if you like musicals and mostly if you like the Beetles. My daughter is 15 and she has watched this movie over and over. It made her a Beetles Fan. The setting is in the time of the Beetles (of course) which I absolutely love.
Absolutely love it. Being a huge Beatles fan, I was skeptical. But after watching this movie, I was totally impressed with the performances. The storyline that was built around the songs was believable and well depicted life and love during the Vietmnam War. I could watch this movie over & over just for the music alone. I highly recommend the movie and the soundtrack.
I will give it a good, even though the person I bought this for specifically asked for this item as a gift from me and said it was excellent. Anyone would think it was excellent if it is what they wanted or asked for as a gift. So I can't begin to say whether I personally think it was a hit.
