Album Notes R.E.M.: Mike Mills (vocals, bass guitar); Michael Stipe (vocals); Peter Buck (guitars). On 2008's ACCELERATE, its first studio album after being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, R.E.M. fittingly returns to its post-punk roots, offering up a taut, guitar-driven set that serves as the perfect antidote to the slow, snoozy AROUND THE SUN. Aiding frontman Michael Stipe, guitarist Peter Buck, and bassist Mike Mills in this convincing return to vintage form is U.K. producer Jacknife Lee, best known for working with Bloc Party and, appropriately, R.E.M.'s peers U2. While those acts often aim for widescreen majesty, however, Stipe, Buck, and Mills seem to have remembered that the group's strength lies in concise, pithy tunes, and Lee is quite willing to meet that aesthetic, as evinced on the restless opener, "Living Well Is the Best Revenge," and the raucous "Horse to Water." Of course, the Georgian band hasn't forgotten its artistic evolution from MURMUR, nodding subtly to GREEN on the shimmering "Supernatural Superserious" and evoking AUTOMATIC FOR THE PEOPLE on the pensive "Until the Day Is Done." Easily R.E.M.'s finest album since NEW ADVENTURES IN HI-FI, ACCELERATE stands as one of the revered ensemble's most immediate and engaging records, and will undoubtedly please fans who have patiently been waiting for the trio to embark on a U2-like rejuvenation. | Find errors in the product description? Reviews Review created: 07/03/08 by: It has been a long time since I've opened my wallet for a new R.E.M. album, but it was worth waiting for...well as much as it could have been. This is R.E.M. of old, the passion, the rock and the cynical views that made Green such a classic are all here again. Michael shows his vocal range on this album, so much so that while listening to the first track I almost ejected the c.d. to see if it was actually R.E.M. Michael's recognizable voice is evident from track 2 onwards, up until the last track that leaves the listener both amused and very satisfied. Review ID: 10000000007799700 Was this review helpful? Great new tunes played on a well gain drenched Telecaster and Michael is at New Heights of Singing! Almost songs like the early days of this one goes out to the one I Love...If you Love & respect this group of oddballs from sleepy Athens, Ga. then get this LP and rock yourself into a better place! I did! Peace,~Cactus Pete Review ID: 10000000007750991 Was this review helpful? Report this review The album flows well between songs and keep a solid, driving beat throughout. Stipe's vocals are solid as usual, and the album is a bit less political than there norm, giving the 11 songs more of a fun feel. Best tracks include: Living Well...Accelerate and I'm Gonna DJ.
