  The perfect album by PT
Review created: 10/11/09

For me it's the best album of this band. It has the essence of this guys and it shows the power of an excellent prog-rock band. Plus, this is the first album with Gavin Harrison, and i believe the evolution of the band's music has a lot to do with his performance.

I liked the music. The discription misrepresented the product. The cd case was broken and falling apart. He said it was slightly scratched and the rest was in excelent condition. The cd was all scratched up like it had been floating around on the car florboard I was afraid it would not play. He refunded my money but I let another cd slip by that was sealed. I will never trust him again. He said the cd slipped by him. However it came in an original shiping package from another retailer.

My brother turned my husband on to this music a short time ago. He liked it so much he asked for a cd for Christmas.I had never heard of them before. We both enjoy the unique sound. It goes from metal to mellow. We both love this music and plan to buy more.

Must have for those that like to trance
Review created: 10/08/08

This music tweaks the same enjoyment area's as Pink Floyd, although I wouldn't call them too similar. Their mellow can be more mellow, but their hard side is far harder. Gilmour is still the king of guitar solo, but music is old fashioned sit down and listen to it trance out stuff.

  BUY THIS CD!!

Now on my all time greatest albums list (which is short). Very well made production, sort of a rock opera (Tommy), also very dark, but that is part of its allure.

  continuous play of bliss.
Review created: 02/11/08(updated 02/11/08)

I use that as a title because that's exactly what I did. You like one song on here, you'll like the others. This cd has that continous feeling of being trank'd, or when the dentist dope's you up for pulling teeth or something. you feel content with the world while listening to this cd.

Many songs.

If you like Coldplay, A Fine Frenzy, Five For Fighting etc., you will want this cd. If nothing else, at LEAST get it for the song "Trains". I play guitar, and that one's fun to learn.

  Where art thou, In Absentia?
Review created: 11/09/06
by:

I love music. A lot! I've watched as many of my favorite bands gain popularity and upon the release of one of their later albums, hear others exclaim their delight in discovering "this new band" that I've been enjoying for years.

This was my turn in being left out. An old friend recommended PT when I saw him again after years, and in trusting his taste I got "In Absentia". I then had to promptly get some of their other albums.

Going from driving guitars and drums in "Blackest Eyes" to a light piano lullaby that you can unwind to with "Collaps The Light Into Earth", Steven Wilson and crew creates diverse and thoughtful music in each song.

If I could have my dream of being in a band, it would be one such as Porcupine Tree. I just wish I had heard of them long before their seventh album.

Porcupine Tree - A Cure for the Common AOR Formula
Review created: 08/13/06
by:

Until a couple of months ago, I had never (due to lack of exposure) heard of Porcupine Tree. "In Absentia" is my new favorite CD! It's one of those rare albums that I bought without knowing what to expect and now can't seem to get enough of it. The sound quality (mixing) is 2nd to none. The writing (lyrical & melodical) is brilliant as well as the compositional layout. I found it obvious that these guys had been around a while. Nobody is this good and refined having just sprung up out of nowhere. This is a mature rock band that masterfully combines progressive, hard, and acid rock with elements of ambient music. I'm now looking forward to discovering the fairly extensive library of music these guys have been putting out since the 80's as well as what's yet to come.

Great sounds from the spiky tree
Review created: 08/11/06
by: thewisefool -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Prog rock influenced musicianship; excellent interplay of various instruments; many moods and textures.

Cons:
Can be scary/disturbing.

Porcupine Tree is a rock group from England led by talented singer/songwriter/instrumentalist Steven Wilson. They are often classified in the progressive rock genre, which is understandable since Wilson is admittedly inspired by various progressive rock and since their music can have elevated instrumental sections, unusual time signatures, and other elements typical of the style. Personally, as a big fan of classic prog bands like Yes, King Crimson, and Pink Floyd, I also have a bit of a bias. In Absentia (2002) is probably the group's most well-known and critically acclaimed work. I was...

  In Absentia, Something Is Missing
Review created: 08/28/04
by: steven9988 -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
great songwriting, stays interesting with diversity, vocals

Cons:
a little unfocused

I've heard on and off great things about this band and "In Absentia" seemed to be the most acclaimed piece of work and a recommended must buy by some respected music fans. So on solely hype I ended up purchasing this before a long car trip knowing practically nothing about the group and very little of how their style was. I read reviews of their previous albums it seemed they used to be a joke band back in the 80s and then began to get serious however borrowing maybe too many elements from progressive rock bands like Pink Floyd. Despite that they stuck together, evolved and now have become...

  This Is No Rehearsal
Review created: 05/02/03
by: Minstrel -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
The Tree continue to change their sound and progress

Cons:
Almost needs to be played extremely loudly

Back in 1996, as the progressive rock band and erstwhile bearers of Gentle Giant's torch Echolyn, were being dumped by a major label (Sony) after 1 album, Porcupine Tree released Signify on the independent Delerium label. It proved that the Tree were no mere Pink Floyd idolaters and strengthened the voices of many progressive rock fans who touted them as the future of the genre. Signify was built on the psychedelia and more traditional prog elements of their earlier albums but it also saw the band embrace the latest synthesizer and sampling technology along the lines of The Orb. Interviews...

  In Awesome-tia
Review created: 05/02/04
by: f6ftg -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Amazing Production. All the songs are well written and preformed. Heavy.

Cons:
Um...

Porcupine Tree is one of the most talented bands in the world today. The Tree is no newbie to the music world either. It started out in the 80s as a joke project for vocalist/guitarist, Steven Wilson. At about 1995, Porcupine Tree became a main focus for Wilson and he acquired some band members to finally make the Porcupine Tree a full band. Along with Wilson came, Colin Edwins on the bass guitar, Richard Barberi on keyboards, and Gavin Harrison (who was a 2002 replacement for Chris Maitland) on drums. They have become the amazing band that they are today. After some amazing releases (Like,...

The creator has a mastertape...and its in Absentia
Review created: 07/06/06
by: eddielancekick -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
One of the best rock bands I've heard in the past decade.

Cons:
nothing.

Pure and magical, you can't really label this! With "Absentia", what do you call this album? Prog rock sure, but it almost does take on a folk appeal at times, while other times the change towards more melody driven, catchier tunes and the absence of the harsh guitars on most tracks that we heard on the 1996 release "Signify". I would almost deem this particular album "Alternative rock" except that it s so much better than what we are used to when hearing other recent albums under that same genre label musically. Steve Wilson's vocals on here are much more emotional and take on higher notes...
