Days of Magic, Nights of War by Clive Barker

I tried to read this book BEFORE reading the first book ABARAT...BAD Idea! This book is a MUST read if you have already read ABARAT by Clive Barker, but it is a sequel and should be treated as such. It is MUCH too confusing to pick up the plot with this book not having read the first one. I eventually abandoned this book, bought the first book, read it and then finished Days of Magic, Nights of War.
This is a fantastical book about a magic world called Abarat that is only accessable through magic and by the Sea of Isabella that shows up on the prarie in Minesota. The main character Candy Quackenbush is transported to Abarat, but it is unclear just WHY, until both Abarat and Days of Magic, Nights of War, have both been read. The characters, and the world of Abarat are very strange and complex, as is the plot. It was a fun read, although I am 44 years old, and the target audience is probably between 12 and 20.
Both Abarat, and Days of Magic, Nights of War are both fairly complicated and lengthy, but once you get into the plot, they are hard to put down!
I was given the book Days of Magic, Nights of War, by a 16 year old friend of my daughter, to borrow (to keep me busy while they were at a rock climbing gym!) and ended up buying both books. I would highly recommend these books to the "book worm" pre-teen and teens who enjoy Science Fiction, and/or Adventure books such as Lord of the Rings, or Narnia. They might be a bit "heavy" for the younger kids, but I think the older ones would really enjoy them!
