      A Razr With Brains

The first thing you'll notice about this phone is its style. It's thin and compact like the Motorola Razr. People will notice this phone. Parts of the outside are ribbed and rubberized for a good grip. There is a large outer screen and music control buttons on the front. It feels solid in your hands, not light and cheap. The hinge also has a solid feel to it. The main screen is large and bright - this is where you'll realize that it's not a regular cellphone.

There is a windows "Start" icon in the lower left hand corner of the main screen, along with your Windows Smartphone home page. Across the top are your last 5 used applications. There is no touch screen, you will have to navigate with the directional buttons. This may take some getting used to if you have a Windows PDA. The buttons are all on one piece of etched metal. They are easy to use, although at times they make a hollow sound when pressed. I especially like the "Home" and "Back" keys that quickly take you exactly where you think they should.

Text entry is standard number pad or T9. You really should give T9 a chance if you haven't before. If you're entering mostly text, it makes things go faster. That said, there is no easy way to enter data on this phone. It doesn't have the QWERTY keyboard that most other smartphones have. If that's what you want, you have many other choices.

You shouldn't have to manually enter most of your information since this phone comes with Active-Sync allowing you to synchronize with MS Outlook email, calendar and contacts. There is no support for Notes, however. You can also transfer files and music to the phone and it does serve well as an MP3 player. For this you will need to get a micro SD memory card. The phone has a version of Internet Explorer that does a decent job of handling different websites. You have the option of viewing the page in one column or scrolling around the full page.

My biggest complaint is the slot for the memory chip is behind the sim chip and battery, so it's not easy to swap out the chip. One other complaint is that the phone has a proprietary jack for data and sound, so you will not be able to use your standard USB cables, headphones and wired hands free devices. Fortunately, these are included with the phone. Hopefully, someone will come up with an adapter that allows standard headphones and hands free. It does have bluetooth, of course, so the connector isn't that big of an issue if you are into the wireless hands-free devices.

One other feature of this phone stands out to me - it serves as a wireless modem through its USB cable, as long as you have a data plan. If you have a laptop you can access the internet wirelessly from anywhere you have a cellphone signal. Do a search to find out how to set this up. The info is on Cingular's website and contains necessary account/password information. Also note that the drivers for the modem are quietly hidden on the CD that come with the phone.

      Cingular 3125
    Review created: 11/06/06

I went from a Razr to this phone after researching the PDA phones available on Cingulars network. This phone takes about a day to figure out. I am not a techno guy so getting through the initial workings and ins and outs of the phone concerned me. However, it really was pretty easy to figure out and I love this phone. I can access the internet and check email or whatever else in a snap. The phone contacts are easy to pull up by hitting the appropriate keypad button and looking for the names to come up. It has many other features that I have not even explored yet. The one thing I was impressed with was the fact that this phone is 'dust proof', meaning it wont get dust inside the screen like the Razr. The keypad is similar to the Razr pad and is easy to use and feel your way around. I had looked at the 8125 phone and was not really thrilled with the keypad that slid out from under the phone. It just seemed flimsy to me. This is a flip phone version of that phone/PDA according to the folks at Cingular. All in all, this is a great phone. No static in the ear piece, no funky quirks like my Razr. GET ONE!!!

      The AT&T 3125 is Amazing!
    Review created: 07/02/08

This phone does it all, while maintaining a sleek form factor as well as amazing battery life! The phone has lots of features (excellent media, office, email, and internet applications), all in a slim package. The only cons: If you are very rough on phones, this may not be the one for you. If you drop it a lot, the external screen may crack, or the hinge may get tricky and turn the phone off or mess with the display. This happens to my wife. She has gone through two of them, because she has the very bad habit of dropping it (she is a busy mom with kids, and her phone sometimes gets away from her). She keeps having me buy these for her, though, because of the great fit with this phone when you are using your shoulder to hold it to your ear while you talk, as well as the features (Outlook synchronization), and the amazingly long battery life. One other common problem with these is the data/charging port which sometimes gets loose (if you are really rough with it) and will keep the phone from charging or syncing properly. If you are not too rough on phones, then this is an amazing all-in-one smartphone that looks, works, and feels great!

AT&T 3125 - best kept secret in smartphones!
    Review created: 04/25/08
    by:

I searched for a smaller PDA-type phone so I can have functionality, but not have a target for theft on my belt.

Now, what was I looking for?
    1) A phone that will sync with Outlook.
    2) A phone that won't be really heavy or attract a lot of attention.
    3) A phone that would excel as a PHONE and have decent PDA functionality.

So, enter in the AT&T 3125. What's so special about it?

    The Good:
    1) Easy to use as a phone. Easy to see and use the buttons in the dark while driving! (Try that with a QWERTY keyboard!)

    2) Bright, clear, crisp display.

    3) It's suprisingly easy to connect this phone to your laptop and use it as a wireless modem. (Just find the "Accessories" folder and you'll find "Internet Sharing". Connect via bluetooth or USB and you're ready to go! Of course, make sure you have an unlimited data plan or it'll cost you a fortune.)

    4) It syncs PERFECTLY with Windows Mobility Center with Vista. (It's not quite so easy for BlackJack users.) Therefore, it's simple to install additional applications.

    5) Works quite well syncing with ExchangeServer, so you can keep current on the go. (Again, have an unlimited data plan!)

    6) VoiceNotes - what an ingenious application! I frequently get good ideas while driving or other times when I don't have a pen to write down ideas. I can just "record a memo" to replay back to myself to recapture that idea.

    The Bad:
    1) Entering data into the device. It's okay when typing in an appointment, but typing out an email or a document would be quite slow. I wouldn't use this phone in that way. There are better smartphones for entering in data.

    2) Not a lot of applications available (compared to Palm). It's not good for reading ebooks (nor are there many available for this format). This is perhaps a good thing for me. It keeps me focused on the basics the phone does and not try any elaborate software packages. Saves money too!

    3) ClearVue applications - not good. I don't use this phone to view attachments in emails. That can wait until I get back to the office. If you're not that fortunate, then you might want to invest in a "documents to go" program for your phone - or consider a different smartphone.

    4) MP3 buttons on top - sometimes it can turn on without you intending to turn it on. I have my phone activate a "button lock", so it eliminates this problem.

    The Ugly:
    1) The microSD card is badly placed (yes we know this). However, should it somehow become loose while it's behind your SIM card, it can have a bad affect on the quality of your calls. I currently do NOT use the microSD card. If you do, make sure it's FIRMLY placed where it should be so it doesn't interrupt your call quality.

    2) If you grip your phone in the wrong way, it's possible that you'll slide your battery cover off, and the phone will turn off. It takes a good minute or two for it to boot back up again.

    3) Be careful cleaning it. If you clean any part of the large hinge, and it stays wet, it can affect your phone display. It'll turn white with some "busy vertical lines". Keep in mind that once it dries, it'll work just as it did before.

If you just want to keep on top of things, this phone ROCKS!

My favorite applications: Facade 1.4 to customize my display; Oxios ToDo List (helps with task list); SmartphoneNotes syncs Outlook Notes (not wirelessly).

I hope you enjoyed my balanced review of AT&T 3125. It's been my favorite phone ever.
