This effort by The Floyd is, in my opinion, somewhat uneven. While you have the undisputed brilliance of "Set the Controls" and "Saucerful of Secrets" there are also songs here that are pretty obviously written "in the style of Syd". It's also quite short which to me is another indicator that they didn't have a wealth of ideas after booting Mr. Barrett. Unfortunately Syd is only credited with one song, the very strange "Jugband Blues". I used to think this was a great album but now I realize this is a transitional album where the band was desperately searching for an identity. Still, I like this album and the cover is absolutely classic! I can't really slam the Floyd because they're one of my favorite bands but there are other early Floyd albums which are definitely more focused such as "Piper at the Gates of Dawn" and "Meddle."

A Saucerful of Secrets (PINK FLOYD)

Iwas introduced to the Sid Barrett, Pink Floyd, through a program on VH1, called "Which One's Pink?" The tracts of the CD shows the beginings of the sound that is Pink Floyd!

A Saucerful of Secrets - Pink Floyd (CD 1994)
Review created: 05/29/09

This is the second album by the famous band Pink Floyd back when they were still experimenting with their style and direction. It is also the last Floyd album from their early years with a Syd Barrett song (Jug Band Blues last track) which has his unique style. Also one of the few Richard Wright songs that was entirely his (Remember a Day) before it was rereleased on the album Relics. If you are a Floyd fan then this is a must have. My only complaint is that the title track song (Saucerful of Secrets) wavers alot and doesn't have alot of direction. The rest of the album is classic Floyd at their best.

  Where's Sid???

Not on the level of their first release. Such a shame about Sid. The tile track is interesting enough, though.

I get the impression that a lot of people think Piper was a little too strange at times. But if you compare it to A Saucerful Of Secrets Piper was downright accessible. The songs here are less poppy and much more experimental, Often diving deeply into mellow psychedelic noise. Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun is the standout masterpiece but every song on the album is brilliant in it's own way. 5 Huge Stars.

A Sos - To Better Understand Shine On You Crazy Diamond
Review created: 12/23/06

This such an unknown album made by one of the best bands if not the best bands ever known. A few of my favorite songs are on this album, Let There Be More Light, Set The Controls For The Heart of The Sun, and A Saucerful of Secrets. Its said that the secrets to the song shine on you crazy diamond are in A Saucerful. I originally bought this because I heard a sample of Set The Conrols and was immediately blown away. If you like these songs and or Floyd you also HAVE to check out Pink Floyd Live At Pompeii the best live dvd they have made.

Reccomended Artists / Albums:
Pink Floyd, Animals
Pink Floyd, Meddle
Pink Floyd, Wish You Were Here
Pink Floyd, Dark Side of The Moon
Pink Floyd, A Saucerful of Secrets

Absolutly my favorite Pink Floyd album. If you like early psychedelic music of the 60s A Saucerfull of Secrets is a must have. Also check out Pink Floyds first album Piper at the Gates of Dawn. These two are the only PF albums to have the highly influental Syd Barrett (shine on you crazy diamond!). A Saucerfull of Secrets has a very raw and haunting sound compared with PF later works. A+

"a saucerful of secrets " by the pink floyd
Review created: 11/10/06

although this is a very old favourite album from way back when, it still holds a special place among the newer contemporary ones i've collected recently.
"the piper at the gates of dawn" was a hard album to follow especially after the "breakdown" and obvious absence of syd barrett on " a saucerful of secrets". nevertheless it was, and still is, a stimulating album with a very different taste from its predecesor.yet syd's influence despite his absence really stands out listening to such tracks as "remember a day", "see-saw" and so on. rick wright's songs possess a whimsey akin to syd barrett's song writing more so than the songs of roger waters (in my 'umble opinion!). but it has to be admitted that "set the controls for the far side of the moon" is a haunting, mysterious tune that never fails to give me "gooose pimples!!!!!
although i prefer "the piper at the gates of dawn" to "a saucerful of secrets" it does rank as one of the better psychaedelic albums of all time!!!
if you are a newcomer to the pink floyd , then i definately recommend "a saucerful of secrets" as a good place to start listening..........

Pink Floyd & A Saucerful of Secrets
Review created: 11/06/06

Though not one of their most popular or better albums it still is good. The styles move from the expected psychadelic to what I would describe as Beatle-esque. True Floyd fans may enjoy this one. It is the last album from Floyd to include music perforemed with or written by the late Syd Barrett. This ablum is clearly different than the first album The Piper at the Gates of Dawn. With this album they begin to define the style many of us know as Pink Floyd. Jugband Blues is the last true Syd Barrett influenced track as he began to seperate from public life and contact.

No clear style is evident as they seem to be trying different things as Syd began to remove himself from the Floyd lineup. A good title, but one liekly only for true Floyd fans.
