A Light in the Attic is a book of poems and drawings by Shel Silverstein. Silverstein’s poems are for children, yet are layered with meaning so that it can be enjoyed on the elementary level and also by the more developed mind. The topics of the poems deal with basic human experiences, including concerns and musings many humorous, some ridiculous and some simplistically profound.
Each poem has a point or deals with a concept. For example “Eight Balloons” can be interpreted to be about cutting loose from whatever anchors one and living freely, being the captain of ones own life. The poems are about everyday life like the fears we face, which is the subject of the poem “What If”. Silverstein’s overall point with writing children’s stories that are equally useful to adults is a reminder that although we grow up, the some things remain the same: contentment, kindness, fear and humor for examples. “Almost Perfect But Not Quite” chronicled human discontent with life. Even upon entering heaven, the character in the poem Mary Hume declares “Almost perfect…but not quite.” This is a profound but simple lesson about discontent. The poem also shows the humorous aspect of discontent; there is comedy in discontent so unreasonable that even heaven is not quite enough.
I bought it because I found it for much much cheaper than in any store. This was the book that I always had checked out in elementary school. Shel Silverstein writes silly poems that I could read over and over again! I plan on sharing it with my kids someday! :)
This is an excellent book for children. I read it when i was young and bought it to have at my house for my neices. (and b/c i love Shel Silverstein's poems) nostalgia! tg
This book is a wonderful look into the attic of shel silversteins mind. It's a personal favorite filled with all of the funny names, silly happenings, and just plain weird things you've come to expect from ol' uncle Shelby. I would say this is a must have for any avid poetry reader or just lover of fun things!

I bought the book for my daughter and granddaughter for a birthday gift. They share the same birthday so I wanted to get them something together. They already had Where the Sidewalk Ends and my daughter reads it to my granddaughter all the time - it's a special book that they share together. My daughter mentioned once that she would like to have A Light in the Attic also. I made a note of it and when the birthday(s) got closer I decided where better to buy the book but on Ebay. I searched for a new copy since it was for a gift and found this seller. I purchased it and paid for it through Paypal the same day. The book was described as new and in perfect condition. When it arrived it was in like new condition and I was proud to give it for a gift. My daughter and granddaughter love the book and have been reading it ever since.
As an Ebay seller myself, whenever I need to purchase something that is not especially easy to find locally, I always go to Ebay and try to find it there first. I believe in supporting fellow Ebay sellers whenever possible. I have since, by accident, found the book in a local bookstore in town, but even with shipping I saved a few dollars buying it on Ebay.
I don't like it because I didn't get it from the seller and paid in full at the end of the auction. The seller did not ever send the book out to me so I can't you how well I really like it.
Growing up with Shel Silverstein books was amazing. Finding a brand new cope of A Light in the Attic was like dusting off books in my attic back home. This is a phenomenal poetry book filled with humor and sentiment. I enjoy the playful illustrations and puns Silverstein created in this book. I decided to buy another copy of it to relive the memories of my childhood. Kids today need his books to really LIVE like kids.

This was one of my favorite books when I was younger. I loved to just sit around reading it. Now every nite before I go to bed I read a couple pages. The book I recieved was in perfect condition.
My students love this book... It's a top 10 choice during free reading! It is also the most mentioned during the unit on Poetry! Adults and children love it!
My children love reading this book and hearing it being read to them. The poems are cute and they are easy to learn. Some even have cute meanings and give you something to think about. I grew up with them and loved reading them and now I can pass it on to my children. Hopefully it will nuture a love of poetry that they will take with them and that they will go and read some of the great poets when they are older.
I have never read a Shel Silverstein book that I didn't like. His wit and sense of style in his writing are just wonderful. He also has as way of making you really think about some of his "tales".
