THE OFFICIAL RED BOOK; A GUIDE BOOK OF UNITED STATES COINS 2007 (60th Edition)

I just had to write this REVIEW to help the newbie/novice coin collector in determining the silver content and value of United States coins.

This is a must have book for your library on Coin Collecting!

Buy this guide to United States Coin collecting. It is a real excellent book THE OFFICIAL RED BOOK; A GUIDE BOOK OF UNITED STATES COINS 2007 (60th Edition) by R.S. YEOMAN and edited by Kenneth Bressett
Read it; cover to cover
Read it again
Study it!
Keep it handy and at the ready for specific coins look-ups and references.
This book tell it ALL! This little red book has a wealth of information, use it as your bible/reference book to coin collecting.
Do your homework in coinage collection! Don't be fooled by simple touted tests like the Kleenex Test to determine the silver content of coins.

The contents of this book covers the entire spectrum of coin collecting and current values of the coins; coin conditions, US Mint marks and so forth.

Remember that the value of coins listed in this book are relative and not what you might sell or buy certain coinage for. The prices are basically estimated values of the coins at the time this book guide was written and published. Any coin or antique is only worth as much as someone is willing to pay. One must also consider the price and value of the silver market and gold market at the time of buying or selling coinage. Some coins will always increase in value regardless. Many things must be considered when buying and or selling coinage; this RED BOOK will educate you on all the variables.

A list of the books indices is as follows:

INTRODUCTION
PRE-FEDERAL ISSUES
FEDERAL ISSUES
BULLION
UNITED STATES PATTERN PIECES
OTHER ISSUES
This excellent little RED BOOK has just about everything you want to know about coins and coin collecting.

After 1964 the US MINTS increased the alloy content of coinage and silver proofs: these alloys consisted of compositions of copper and nickel and bonded to inner core of pure copper.

This book is usually reprinted and updated in September for the forthcoming year. At this writing this guide book for the 2007 Edition is available.

  Redbook guide to U.S. coins

The Redbook, Guide to U.S. Coins is an excellent tool for collectors. It provides basic details about every coin minted by the U.S. Mint. Grading details on the coins as well as a basic price guide. The price guide is where I have the biggest issue. The prices have been random at best, especially over the last 2 years. Gold and silver have been going up rapidly, it has caused this books price guide to be out of date before it even hits the stores. Why do I state this? Well, Gold went up over $200 in the last year, Silver went up over $8 in the last year. How do you think that affected gold and silver coins? They skyrocketed! There is nothing a once a year publication can do to overcome this problem. However, there is something the collector can do, get price guides that are issued weekly, monthly or even quarterly. You can buy monthly coin magazines at any book store. These are much more accurate methods of figuing coin values when considering your next purchase. CoinWorld is another good source for coin prices There are also online sources for coin prices that can be useful if they are not inflated prices. Several ebay sellers use these sites as reference guides to try and convience the buyers that they are getting a great deal. I hope this was helpful, especially for you new collectors.

If there is any one book to have as a coin collector, this is it. It is just a wealth of knowledge, from coin sizes and weights, to values and grading guides, it just about has a it all. Sure, the value guide is a little off usually, but with the way silver and gold have been, it's not an exact science. A must have book, buy it, read it, learn it.....

This is the Number 1 book of coins out there. Not a day goes by that I don't use this book. If you are a coin collector this is the one book you should have. This has everything in it. All of the different American coins and what they are made of and what they are worth for different grades, it has type coins and minting information and everything you will ever need to know. I have been using this book since 2002 and it is still the best one out there.

A must have guide for collectors on all levels

A must have guide for every collector of United Sates coins.

This book is easy for anyone to understand, with descriptions and color photos of many coins. And don't just look at the the price guide, read all the other parts from cover to cover to learn interesting histories and facts about coins that you may not already know. There are stories of famous Hoards, Sunken Treasures, and brief bits on great collectors and collections of the past.

In 1946, a slim but fact-filled book hit the hobby scene: R.S. Yeoman's Guide Book of United States Coins. This April, Whitman Publishing will release the 60th Anniversary edition of this beloved, best-selling hobby guide, known everywhere as the Red Book. The Red Book prices more than 6,000 coins, with nearly 30,000 individual values. Of course this comprehensive pricing isn't the only reason collectors have made the Red Book one of the top-selling nonfiction titles in publishing history. A solid foundation and 60 years of numismatic scholarship have built what many collectors call the Bible of the hobby a single resource that teaches a little of everything about American coins; a reference jam-packed with facts and figures that researchers go back to time and time again. More than 700 new full-color photographs, updated mintages and coin values, new auction records, additional pattern pieces, expanded coverage of Civil War tokens, and the latest commemoratives, sets, and other coins.

There is no other book out there that I would use to price coins. There are good closeups of the coins great references to other coin sources they even give yo a great overview of the history of the coins as well as an index of all the coin terminology. After reading this book you will KNOW what a B/U RPM DDO/R with a Die Crack actually means :) The down side is that you have to buy one every year to find the information on the prior years coin. I have the 2007 and if I want to see what the prices for 2007 George Washington Dollar coins are going for, I have to wait until the 2008 version is out. But there are over 200 years worth of coin examples for every coin ever minted in the US to date....Well worth the price!

  The Red Book 2007 Edition

I call this guide my "Coin Bible" because I just can't fathom how I ever tried collecting without it! I had so many coins in the past and let them go for little or no profit when hard times came around. When I got this book, I found out that if I had held on to those coins, I probably could have retired in 20 more years! But now that I have this book, I know what to look for, what to pay for them, and what the trends are for every coin known in US History! What a wonderful addition for anyone to have who is in the hobby! The only thing I would do differently is, I would ask that the editors add a little more information regarding the Commemorative coins. There is so much info on all the other coins, but the Commemoratives seem to only have a photo and a price....there is not much help as far as Grading commemoratives, either. But other than that, this book is a God-send and I really hope they continue it every year.
