This is the Number 1 book of coins out there. Not a day goes by that I don't use this book. If you are a coin collector this is the one book you should have. This has everything in it. All of the different American coins and what they are made of and what they are worth for different grades, it has type coins and minting information and everything you will ever need to know. I have been using this book since 2002 and it is still the best one out there.

As a dealer and seller of coins, I am constantly barraged with offers for books on the subject. Sadly, I've purchased some of those books, only to find that they lack a little or a lot of information.

That's not the case with "A Guide Book of United States Coins," (2008) by R.S. Yeoman. This is an outstanding resource, used year-over-year by old pro's and novice collectors alike! What many people don't know is that Mr. Yeoman passed away many years, but his legacy is so enduring that the publisher continues to carry the byline of this masterful archivist and editor.

So, just how good is it? Well, try to find a copy of the ORIGINAL "Redbook" from 1947. Be prepared to pay $1,000 or better! Anyway, on to the review of the current edition ...

The 2008 edition is chock full of information about virtually every series of US coin, including type coins, commemoratives, and territorial issuances. The only downside is that the price guides give ranges vs. sample prices for every grade of MS and PR coins. Still, there are plenty of other resources that give more detailed and current information, so no worries about the generalizations!

The spiral-binding is nice, especially because it allows you to save your place when while eBaying!

Detailed photographs and historical information about many different series also are a plus. The balance of information is just right ... not too much or too little.

If you want a single resource that contains a wealth of information, all at an affordable price, you simply cannot go wrong with the Redbook. Did you find this guide helpful? Please let me know.

Thank you ... and Happy eBaying!

The book is very easy to use because of the binding. It is very inexpensive and we buy one each year to keep up to date on coin values.

  2008 Red Book
Review created: 05/09/08

Reason for purchasing was to find a publication that would give me numbers
minted for each coin. I also have the Grey Sheet, which is updated weekly.
The Grey Sheet is much more practical, up-to-date, and effective. There is some
use for the Red Book, but other than numbers minted, it can't compare with the
Grey Sheet. I use the Red Book very little. One more thing, the RED BOOK is
far more inclusive, covering many more coins, than does the Grey Sheet. Yet
the Grey Sheet is more to my liking.

When i was 12,and i started collecting my first coins, lincoln wheat cents, i told my dad i needed a book to see how much they are worth. He took me to the coin shop and there on the shelf were the new edition red books 1977..The book jumped out at me and i knew this is the price guide i am looking for..From that day and every year since, its the only coin guide i have ever bought. It not only has the best average prices of coins, but also tells you everything you ever needed to know about coins..Everything from the first us coins minted to the latest. There are lifetimes of experience put in to these books by the authors alive and that have passed away. There is genuine numismatic expertise combined with generations of research which make this truly the only numismatic encyclopedia you will ever need.

Quick, easy to diagram coin and potential price, value, condition. Pretty much drivers study manual for coin collecting.
Without this, you really don't know what you have in your hand-or what it's worth in purchasing.

Hours of enjoyment and an exceptional learning tool!

It was interesting to learn and see what type of coins were circulated prior to United States becoming a country. Great color photos.

I've also used this many times to value the coins I am collecting.

  2008 US Coins

It's a good reference book for identifying US coins. But the values given are way behind the present values. In most cases ebay brings much higher prices than the book value.

  Coin Guide
Review created: 03/02/08

In searching for values on coins, as i have many of interest, the Red Book of United States Coins 2008 was one of great interest as it has listings of the US coins, while it also has Commemoratives, GOLD coin listings, Silver coins, Eagles ,Proof and Mint sets, and what i loved the most was I even found listings on Colonial coins, Coins that I would never have never been able to identify, with out the help of this book.
The price of the The United States Coins 2008 Red Book was a fair price.

This one "Red Book" gives pictures of all the US coins from the mid-1700's to 2007. It also gives prices for each one, if they are available. US coin prices do vary every month; but this guide gives you an approximate price at the beginning of 2008.
I decided to buy it so I can get approximate prices for all collectible US coins for 2008. The given price was also reasonable on Ebay.

I completely agree with all of the reviews which have been written here about this incredible book!

Whenever I am looking at acquiring new coins, whether via E-Bay, from an antique shop, from a private collector, or from a dealer, this book is at my side and referenced as part of the purchase process.

I have declined to bid on several coins on E-Bay because of this book because the reserves were set to prices higher than the coin(s) were worth. I have also stopped bidding on coins listed on E-Bay because those who were overly anxious to purchase the coin in which I was interested had already driven the price of the auction over the value of the coin.

Thanks to the authors for providing an invaluable tool for Numismatics to use in our quests to aquire new additions to our collections!

A MUST HAVE, IT IS BEST GUIDE OF US COINS - read review

A Guide Book of United States Coins 2008 by R.S. Yeoman, and edited by Kenneth Bressett (2007) best know as the RED BOOK is one of the best guides of US Coins.
The Official Red Book is a well thought out guide, extensive research and information, excellent color photos, fully illustrated, valuations from 1616 to date. Virtually the easiest to use and the most comprehensive guide of US coins, although I love the feel and look of the Hardcover edition, the Spiral-bound catalogue is even easier to use (I am referring to the 61th edition of the Red Book).
The Research Editor Q.David Bowers is probably the best know personality in numismatic circles, has written, edited, and participated in numerous books, his expertise in the numismatic fild and extensive experience in the business is hard to match, and the well known Valuations Editor Jeff Garrett add great expertise to this catalog.
If there is a book need is The Official Red Book - A Guide Book of United States Coins 2008, Should be the first book a numismatist should buy, if you are a beginner coin collector is great because is the best and easiest to use, clear and succinct, if you are an experienced numismatist is also the best for concise and effortless format, simple to read, and for it's precise and reference available.

SEE ALSO:
The Official Blue Book Handbook of United States Coins 2008 by R.S. Yeoman, and edited by Kenneth Bressett (2007) also known as The Blue Book is in its 65th edition for 2008 and counting, it has most of the best qualities of the Red Book, but valuations are designed as a reference for dealers and independent numismatists business sellers and not for the general public. For a couple of dollars more purchase the cloth Hardcover over the Paperback edition

I recently started selling coins here and at times found myself at a loss on how to properly describe items in "coin lingo". This value guide is very comprehensive and an excellent source from the novice to the professional dealer. It gives detail to every coin on how to grade them and their current values, LOADS of pics. A MUST buy for anyone that wants to collect coins or deals with coins.
