A Good Woman by Danielle Steel (2008, Hardcover)

The Worthington family is at the top of Fifth Ave and Newport society. The patriarch is an affluent banker; his wife is a leader of the upper crust; and their two children are highly regarded. Everything changes when the Titanic goes down in 1912 as the patriarch and the son die in the tragedy leaving behind nineteen years old Annabelle and her mom to grieve their loss.

A banking colleague of her late dad Josiah Millbank kindly offers marriage to Annabelle; she accepts. Two years later having never made love, Josiah informs his young wife that he has syphilis and demands a divorce because he wants to be with his male lover. Annabelle says no so Josiah files for a divorce on the grounds of adultery. Everyone assumes the kind banker is the victim leaving Annabelle a pariah. She goes to Paris to start over hoping to become a doctor based on her volunteer work at Ellis Island.

Annabelle makes the historical tale fun to read as her strength shines through even when her reputation is unfairly destroyed. The plight of women in high society just prior to WW I comes into deep focus by the way Annabelle's peers react to first the Titanic tragedy, then her marriage, and finally the accusations. Fans will enjoy Danielle Steele's fine early twentieth century saga of a woman who could quote Sinatra's That's Life because Annabelle knows that "Some people get their kicks, Stompin' on a dream" but she also would sing "Each time I find myself, flat on my face, I pick myself up and get back in the race".

In my opinion, this just might be D.Steel's best book yet! The main character was so strong, and you couldn't stop rooting for her through all her trials and tribulations. Very interesting how far we've come in one respect, as to how women are viewed & treated, and how much more tolerant we (most of us) are now as opposed to during the WWI period. Very enjoyable book!!!

Great descriptive-fast moving novel. Included many of present day issues-people critical & quick to judge! What a STRONG character Annabelle was. Could not put it down. Great gift for Danielle Steel fan.

D Steel is one of my favorite authors, for easy reading. I have read every book she has written. This is why I bought it, as I knew it had just come out. Can't wait to read it. There was just one of her books, that was so sad, I almost wish I had not read it. this book may have been written around the time her son died.

This is Danielle Steel at her best! This book is a historical drama/romance of a woman who was brought up with everything, to her emotional and social downfall. She goes to work overseas, during World War I and becomes the person she always wanted to be.
Danielle Steel weaves a great story through characters who are real and take you along for the ride.

Danielle Steel is my favorite author so I read everything she writes. It wavery convenient to buy it on EBay. I hadn't thought of that before. Since I bought this one, I have bought two more. This is one of her best right up to the very last page.

Oh this is one of the best works Danielle Steele has done yet. This book show the courage and values we need in life today. Dannielle Steele is my favorite author. This book tells you about the life of the women who raises her child on her own and does a job of it that needs restored in this day and time. Hope you enjoy this book just have as much as I did.

I was a little disappointed in this book. I thought it was just a little slower then most of Danielle Steel's books. Being from Newport, RI myself I was really looking forward to reading this book. I was good just not great.

Great book. I love Danielle Steel and have never read a book of hers that I didn't like and I have read them all!!
