If you have ever wondered why ethnic groups don't get along in America, Takaki looks at the history of imigrants and how they were used. I was upset reading about my ethnic group, but Takaki puts it together in the last chapter. Now I understand that economic comptition among groups was exploited by greedy people.

This is a book packed with information from a multitude of sources. It is a great overview of History in America that may open the eyes of those who have not studied a lot of History. I have a degree in History and enjoyed reading it, yet I did not find anything shocking or startling within the book. Mostly, this is a good book to use as a review of the different people that have had struggles within a 'White' America.

Why you bought it: I bought this this item for my nephew for his first year in college, we did not want to pay full prices for books and I decided to bid for them on ebay, I enjoy bidding and winning my items for great prices and in good condition items.

What you like most about it: I can only say that the condition of the book was as posted and usable for my nephew, as far as i can tell he is pleased and using his books for the purpose they were purchased.

I use this book in my class. It is not easy reading, as the subject matter is not always so pleasant, but I am enjoying the book.

This book is well written and hold the reader's attention. Definitely not a dry read! The different stories about the various ethnicities are very interesting and thought provoking.

You will learn what really happened in our history and not just the sugar coated version. It is an easy text to read and understand while still being up to college standards. I bought it for a class I am taking.

I bought this book for a class I'm taking on minorities in America. So far, it has been very insightful and incredibly interesting. Takaki traces the history of different minority groups in the US and the truth about what happened to certain ethnic and racial groups is astounding! He is perhaps postively biased toward the minorities and negatively biased toward other Americans, just by what he chooses to write, etc. But all in all, a great read. Even if I wasn't taking the class, I would want to read this book!

This book was purchased for a college course. I've read the first few chapters and so far it's okay. The very beginning was pretty interesting because I learned a lot about Thomas Jefferson that they didn't teach me in elementary or even high school. There's so much history that we don't learn in school (but I can see why). So it's a great history lesson but sometimes it's hard to pay attention as it does get a little dry at times. I'm just taking it slowly and reading small parts at a time. That way my interest isn't totally lost.

It's the text book required by Humanity class. My classmate told me to buy the text book on half.com and I like it. The book I received is exactly like what I expected.

This book questions our ideas of race and America in general. You have never read American history like this before. It tears away the sugar coating and leaves bare the cold hard truth of American History. There are more than several times this book brought me to tears.
