I bought the iPod Touch 2G for my wife as a X-Mas present and I have to say, it was worth it. The apps are varied and add much to the experience of having the touch by expanding upon its basic functions and abilities. There are piano emulators, apps to check the weather, apps to stream radio and of course a decent amount of games. My wife certainly enjoys the ability to have a nice and quick diversion at her fingertips (literally) and I have also enjoyed my experiences with the touch.

That is not to say that there have not been a few hiccups along the way. First and foremost is the issue of battery life. Out of the box there are several things you really NEED to do to get the most out of the touches battery life. From changing the brightness setting, to making sure you turn wi-fi off when you can't get a connection to NOT turning the touch on and off and putting it to sleep when you will be using it regularly-semi-regularly. There are certain things that you have to do that seem strange or are just be the kind of things that a casual buyer/user would not be aware of and I encourage you to look these things up if you are looking into buying one. There are tons of little tricks floating around the internet in regards to the touch. My wife certainly would have used the touch as-is without giving it a second thought, and I suspect that many people, enticed by the whole "OMG I have to get a touch" phenomenon would not bother to even go into the settings or question the battery drain until they notice they are getting very bad battery mileage. Also there is an issue of response time. Occasionally, the touch will become rather sluggish and respond very slowly to commands. The most prevalent issue, at least for me, is the screen tends hang in a layout occasionally or it takes a serious lean to get it to change from the landscape to standard view and vice-versa. It's not a big deal though and usually a nice sleep-wakeup click does the trick.

Also it should be noted that the touch, in my opinion, is NOT a serious gaming system as the PSP and DS are much wiser choices for those interested in that, but it's fun for what it is. Also if you are looking for something just to play music, don't bother blowing the $200-400 as there are MP3 players out there that can be had for far less and work just as good, if not better, for those who need music, and only music, on the go. The same could be said for those looking for a multimedia device, there are better options out there, although they may not come in a package as appealing or compact as the touch. But if you have the interest and the $$$, by all means read up on 2G Touch...there are things I haven't talked about here that would certainly be of interest to those laying down the cash and might influence you better than my rudimentary review could.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE FIRST AND SECOND GENERATION
Review created: 02/27/09(updated 02/27/09)
by:
30 of 30 people found this review helpful.

The main differences:

- The 1G has a flat backplate, the one on the 2G tapers out and becomes thinner at the edges like with the iPhone 3G.
- 2G has a redesigned Wi Fi receiver cover - it's a rectangle in a corner of the 1G, but on the 2G it's more curved and moved closer to the centre of the backplate.
- The 2G is slightly (0.5mm) thicker than the 1G.
- 2G has a speaker.
- 2G has external volume controls.
- 2G is not FireWire compatible while the 1G is (that's not important unless you have any old iPod accessories that use FireWire that you want to use with the 2G)
- 2G has longer battery life.
- 2G has a better-looking screen (the 1G seems more washed out in comparison)
- 2G has Nike+iPod support.

Wi Fi receiver
- The Wi Fi receiver on the first generation iPod touch is situated in the upper left-hand corner of the backplate, and is very square-shaped.
- The receiver on the second generation touch is more of an oval shape and is situated between the upper left-hand corner and the center of the backplate.

Backplate
- The backplate on the first gen touch is rather flat, and curves only at the edges.
- The backplate on the second gen touch is tapered; it's thicker at the middle and curves around to become thinner at the edges (much like the iPhone 3G).

Thickness
- Contrary to what some people say, the second gen touch is actually 0.5mm thicker than the first gen.

Bezel
- The first gen touch has a black aluminum bezel around the screen.
- The second gen touch has a chrome bezel, like the iPhone, which is in fact a continuation of the chrome backplate that curves around to "hug" the screen.

Volume controls
- The first gen touch features no external volume controls.
- The second gen touch has volume controls on the left-hand side of the device (when looking at it from the front).

Packaging
- The first gen touch comes in a black box. "iPod touch", the Apple logo and the device's capacity are embossed on the sides. The front of the box shows the iPod touch playing music (usually the box will display either a Macy Gray or John Lennon song playing).
- The second gen touch comes in a clear plastic box, like the iPod nano and shuffle. Over the iPod is a sticker which shows the default look of the Home screen.

MISCELLANEOUS
- The second gen touch has an inbuilt speaker. The first gen does not.
- The second gen touch has Nike+iPod support, whilst the first gen does not.
- The second gen supports audio recording and headphones with a microphone and volume controls.

I was excited about having an iPhone without the phone, but the iPod touch isn't really that: for one, it doesn't support all the same apps as an iPhone (facebook for one, and youtube videos wouldn't load!) The wifi also wouldn't connect in my house, while my laptop picked it up. But most importantly, the part that counts... the music (it IS an iPod, after all) is way more difficult to operate than my old wheel iPod. There's an outside volume control, but most annoyingly, no button for skipping ahead, so if you want to go to the next song you have to press the menu button, slide to unlock, and THEN skip ahead. Not convenient if you're exercising.

Also, making an On the Go playlist is inordinately complicated: you have to go into the playlist, hit "Edit" and then go look for what you want to add... no easy holding down feature like the Classic. And if you want to look up a song by title while editing On the Go, you have to scroll ALL the way through instead of being able to jump to a song, something so inconvenient I don't understand why. I also don't understand why, with all the fanciness, you can't find a song by typing in the title like in iTunes. For all the faux-computer style of the touch, it doesn't really do much with it.

I still haven't been able to try out my Nike + iPod, which is the most exciting part, and a lot of those great games they show on the commercials are apparently over sensitive and not as fun. But I'm hoping I'll find some apps that work with it that make it worth the money I spent.

  Terrible experience

This was a bad experience from the start. The seller was not responsive to my emails. He took a long time to send it out, even though i paid using paypal. He claimed he had to wait for my funds to clear. The item was a $330 ipod touch, so i was anxious to make sure i was not getting ripped off and he took a long time to respond to my inquiries. 6 days after payment he gave me the tracking number. Now, 9 days after payment, i check the tracking # on usps.com and it says that some item was delivered to my zip code two days ago. No insurance and no way of knowing if it was actually mailed to the correct address in my zip code. The method of mailing he used required no signature so there was no way of knowing who received the package or track its actual location.

I live in a doorman bldg but could not accuse any of the doormen without a signature. I asked the seller if he could make it right by sending a new one, as my last ebay seller had done when the usps messed up, and he said he could not do that and implied that i was lying about it and told me others had "lost items" in the past, and he could not help me. then he got defensive when i told him that the details of the delivery was too vague and i had no way of knowing whether the item was what he said it was and that i had no way to know that the address was correct. He told me not to call him a criminal, and he boasted about his great reputation on ebay, when all i was telling him was that it was not acceptable for me to spend $330 and the only info i get is that some item was sent to my zip code, no address, no item description.

i am going through paypal to get the cash reimbursed. do not deal with this guy. i cant say that he ripped me off, and never did, but i do know that he is not helpful and is careless when dealing with high value items.

when i asked for his number he said he did not have a phone but could call me. i gave him my number and instead of calling he sent me an email apology. better than nothing i guess. this was a nightmare and when i get my money back i'm going to the apple store and buying my ipod from a real person for the full $400 and not giving them the cash until i have the product.

usps is running an investigation. somehow that doesnt make me feel better at all. this experience was about as enjoyable as a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.

You Will Never Run Out Of Things To Do!
Review created: 05/13/09
by:
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I recently bought an itouch after waiting about a year or so to make my decision of stepping up to a better ipod. The itouch is probably one of the most technically advanced things i own now. The size and weight of it make it easy to conceal in a pocket or purse. The huge 3" screen is so crisp and clear that the things you see take your breath away. There are so many things you can do on them; simply from listening to music to paying your taxes! With the ever increasing "app store", you will never run out of fun things to find that will make your life easier.
One of the major reasons I, and many others, buy itouch's is for its internet capibility. It's quick just like a computer and can be accessed almost anywhere. All you do is use your free "wi-fi finder" to find the closest free wi-fi, walk into the store/resturant, and you have easy access internet. It's that simple! The itouch has the best of every ipod and incorperates it very well into a sleek shape. The touch screen is quick responsive and the battery life is excellent. Easily one of the best purchases I've made in a long time. I hope my quick review helps some people make a decision. Thanks.

Get a free iPod Touch!!! Have a look at this video first:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DFKYVE__Mug

I know that YOU do not want to spend YOUR MONEY on this expensive product. Please just take 2 minutes and read this. This is very EASY to do! It literally takes 10 minutes to setup. Simply follow the steps below. I promise you, this is 100% real. I wouldn't jeopardize my eBay account status if this was a scam. My feedback is real and I will answer you on any question! Here is what you do. Click on the link below, register, pick an account type (referral is the easiest) and complete just 1 offer (Very important that you complete the 1 offer otherwise your account will sit in limbo until you do). This is not like other sites where you need to complete one offer on 2 or 3 different pages!!! And a lot of these offers are FREE trials with nothing else to buy...No commitments!!!

There are plenty of cool offers to choose from such as Blockbuster online, Stamp. com, Netflix, Gamefly which are services you would regularly sign up for anyways and their all secure networks, why not use them to get a free iPod or cash (I did the Stamps. com for a 4 week free trial and it is free!). Look at the offers and choose the one that works for you. After signing up and completing your one offer, simply refer 5-13 people (depending on the FREE prize you choose) to do the same under your link (just post the same thing as I have on eBay, and you'll get your referrals before the auction even ends.
)

Then they will ship your free iPod Touch or your selected item for free, I chose the iPod Touch. No Joke, 100% REAL!!! The reason these companies make money, is because most people don't bother getting all the referrals. All you have to do is post it on EBAY or any message boards, blogs, face book, my space or any place you hang out at. ! They use us as advertisement by word of mouth which saves them tons of money which goes toward yours and my free gift. These are legit companies such as Blockbuster, Netflix, Gamefly etc... You can copy my listing if you want. You must use your own authentic link though. You will get your own personal link after your orders placed.

Step 1: Copy and paste this link: http://www.YourFreeVideoiPods.com/index.php?ref=5454150

Step 2: Sign up and chose an account type (Referral is the easiest and best).

Step 3: Complete just 1 offer (like Blockbuster or Stamps. com) and refer up to 13 people to do the same (use eBay! Do what I did, copy my ad).

Love my iPod Touch- should have bought it from Apple
Review created: 06/18/09(updated 06/18/09)

I love this iPod, but if I had it to do over again, I would buy a refurbished iPod directly from Apple. They provide a one year warranty, the product is not scratched and they have great customer service. If you want a one year warranty on an eBay product, you have to purchase it for $36. When you add that to the cost of the item, it would have cost less to get one from Apple.

Review of 32 gb Ipod Touch 2nd Gen.
Review created: 03/05/09

I like the ipod touch gen 2 for the added external volume control and the built in speaker. Wifi is great and fun to use when you're in a restaurant, hotel, or other business with wifi. I can use it at home when lying in bed or just chillin' on the couch when I don't want my laptop on my lap. Lots of apps and great speed and graphics. I rated it good instead of excellent because apple locks down their products unlike other manufacturers. They are more focused on making money than pleasing the customers. If you buy one, please buy a good case and screen protector for it. I bought the Switch Easy Neo. Thanks for reading!

Updated iPod Touch Delivers Nice New Features
Review created: 06/09/09
by:
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

The iPod Touch debuted only one year ago, and this is the first update. I was excited to pick up the new iPod Touch at the Apple Store because I had never owned a first generation, though I do own iPhones.

I want to concentrate primarily on the new features:

First, physical volume buttons are now placed on the side of the iPod Touch as they are on the iPhone. This is very convenient. It allows you to adjust the volume of your music, without having to pull the entire device out of your pocket and activate the screen. A time saver.

Second, many people requested a built-in speaker for the iPod Touch like is available on the iPhone. Apple listened. However, there is one important point to make on this! The iPod Touch is incredibly small, and Apple is forced to put an incredibly small speaker. The speaker in the iPod Touch sounds worst than the speaker in the iPhone. I have compared it side by side, and it's fairly significant, and the iPhone speaker isn't that great to begin with. However, in a quiet room, the speaker is still useful for previewing a song you might want to buy, or for playing games. However, still, if you want great sound, you need to connect your headphones.

Genius - This new feature is really surprisingly good. When you're listening to a song you enjoy, select the genius option. It will create a playlist for you, with songs that go together nicely with the one you started with. It helps you rediscover great music from your collection with a playlist suited to the mood you're in. I didn't think it would do a good job compiling this list, but it has been quite impressive.

Applications - It's great to have the ability to buy (or get some free) applications right on the iPod Touch. Furthermore, with the software update this new iPod Touch comes with, the Application installation process is so much smoother than it had been even on my iPhone. It now works how you want it to, seamlessly. I like having a weather application that includes doppler radar images, and that is free. I also have several games on it. There is a great variety of applications available from hundreds of third-parties right on the iPod itself, so you are certain to find something that interests you. I really like the new release of Spore, for the iPod Touch and iPhone. Apple is really pushing the games and quietly suggest they are challenging Nintendo and Sony. They are innovative and interesting games, but I think they have a ways to go, to challenge those game makers.

Nike + is now built in too, so if you have the shoes and the puck, the iPod Touch is ready to receive the data from it. Battery life is improved to 36 hours audio and 6 hours video according to Apple. I find the audio number fairly accurate if you don't light up the display much, but the video number is a slight bit harder to achieve.

Of course, the new ipod Touch does look and feel even better than the first generation, from my small experiences with the previous one. I also think it feels cooler than my iPhones, but obviously your interpretation may very. I like the metal back on the iPod Touch. It looks classy, though it is prone to scratches.

One of my favorite features continues to be, when in my home on Wi-Fi, to reach down for the Touch, use Safari web browser and look something up. It's great.

Overall, it was a solid update for the iPod Touch. I wish the speaker could be better on it, but I believe that is due to the physical restrictions of the sm

iPhone without phone (That s good!)
Review created: 10/24/08
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

PROS:
Beautiful 3,5" touch screen (very scratch resistant)
Responsive & logical controls
Built in accelerometer that really adds to the interface
Thin & slick design, very comfortable
Sound quality is good (not perfect)
Wi-Fi Capabilities
Long battery life for music playback (around 30 hours)
Lots of free applications (PDF Readers, games, utilities, news, stocks, calculator)

CONS:
Finger print magnet (it comes with special cloth but either way...)
No camera, but the iPhone camera isn't that good either..
Restricted to apple store applications and you need iTunes installed to put stuff in it.
Short battery life using applications (around 3 hours)

Overall thoughts:
It's the perfect Ipod, way better then the Ipod Classic or Nano. You can read PDfs, check mail, watch HD-like movies, play games (some of the are like Wii using the accelerometer) and you can web surf on the go, so just get one! I like to call it the the no phone Iphone because that is exactly what it is, and its almost $150 less and you don't have to sign any contract.

Great Technology of the 21 Century...

The IPOD ITOUCH is a excellent investment for any person that love high tech, but the best thing that you should do is jailbreak the unit in that way you can use the full potential and to have all the capabilities to install all kind of game and application + any movie from your PC. You can also use any hot spot to navigate the World Wide Web. The wireless technology is very sensitive and with a poor signal it will navigate great. The ITOUCH is not a phone but it can be use as a phone with the help of Skype crystal clear sound communication. I give to the 2nd Generation Apple IPOD ITOUCH 4 Star and 1 sad face because of the limitation of the 9 page icon that you will confront during the installation of games and application.

I bought it as a present for my mom but she's IN LOVE with it! She had an 8 GB, but she REALLY wanted the newest version (2nd) and the biggest memory-32GB, so that's what I got for her. She's not even answering the phone because she's too busy with her New Apple iPod! I personally can't speak of if the thing works-actually my mom just called and she has been using it all morning and I told her about this review and she said t tell you that "the APPLE IPOD 2ND GENERATION WITH 32GB IS ABSOLUTELY PERFECT!!!!!!" I wrote that exactly like she told me to (all caps) She cracks me up. Anyway, I don't think you could get a better review than perfection! Thank you, Barbi-me and Betty-my mom

awesome product that allows music pix and wifi connectivity. Although a little pricier than other mp3 players, this is well worth the extra money. I didn't want the iphone with the extra costs and the itouch does everything the iphone does except for phone and taking pix. I have't loaded games or movies yet but I will soon. Couple this with bose headphones and the two are an awesome experience.

There is so much you can do with it. Especially when you couple it with accessories such as FM modulator, and video out cable. I have found I no longer use my DVD player in the car, just plug it in to the video system, you are good to go. The WiFi is another cool feature, partly why I bought it. Internet is free, I no longer have a need to bring my lap top on trips to keep in touch with family at home. There are so many App's, so much free stuff, such as movie times, and "find coffee" for those times you just cannot find a starbucks. The sound quality is also amazing. I have never before owned an ipod, so this might be the norm with all of them. As of now I have 4 days worth of music on it, in addition to 12 full length movies, podcasts, and a whole bunch of pictures. I still have just under 22GB free. If you can part with the money, which is a significant cost compared to a nano, about $200 more, I would definitely jump in and get one.

I decided to buy the iPod touch because i am with a different carrier than the Iphone. i am very happy i did not buy the Iphone because i would be paying all those monthly fees when i don't need to because the iPod has most the features without the cost. This is by far the best thing i have purchased. it goes wherever i go. there are so many apps to choose from and there is an app for everybody. i am even exercising more because of the iPod. i can watch my movies while i exercise, which makes my workouts go by very fast. i handle my finances on it, make all my shopping and any kind of list i may need on it. it does everything i need it to do. i see some reviews say the sound quality isn't very good but as far as i am concerned the sound is great. for those times when i have nothing to do i play games on the iPod and they are so much fun. anything i need to know i can find out on this iPod. it is amazing. i would suggest anybody to purchase the iPod Touch, it is worth every cent.
I know some people gave it bad reviews but as for me i am very very happy with my purchase, i have no complaints, its amazing. I hope my review has helped anybody thinking of buying the iPod touch.
thank you for reading, it has my pleasure to give it a great review.
