Apple Computer continues to revolutionize the definition of style and portability with its iPod line of digital media players, and this iPod Nano is no exception.

The iPod Nano literally stunned skeptics and fans alike with its incredible storage, small size, and appealing design.

Now, the 2nd generation of iPod Nano is here, and its better in several ways:

1) It's thinner. Hard to believe, but it is actually even easier to carry and hold in its new form factor.

2) Longer battery life. The new design is advertised at up to 24 hours of playtime. At least double the old models.

3) Brighter screen. Even better for reading in daylight and showing photos, this screen is 40% brighter than the first generation model.

4) Color! Apple has released five new colors: pink, green, blue, silver, and black.

This is the 2GB model, which is the best price possible for the iPod Nano. This is the old price of the iPod shuffle, and now you are getting more storage and a color screen! Can't be beat.

If you need your music to go, this is the iPod for you.

2nd Generation Nano is a Must Buy!

The Nano was brought out to replace the Mini, but this new remastering of the iPod is a fusion of the 1st generation Nano and the Mini. Available in capacities of 2, 4, and 8GB (priced at $149, $199, and $249, respectively) these have a scratch-resistant aluminum shell, rounded edges, and various colors like the mini, though the colors are only available in the 4GB models. You can get a 2GB Nano, though it only comes in Silver. If you go under Apple.com’s website for deals and refurbished products, you can still get a 2GB Nano for $99.00, but remember it is the first generation. I purchased the 8GB Nano, though it only comes in black, but this version is the largest for storage.

Though it looks like the iPod Mini, it is more like the 1st generation Nano. The 2nd Generation Nano is the same height and width as the original Nano, but with the rounded edges, it feels like it is shorter on the sides. This design also makes it feel a lot thinner than it was, though it is only a .01 inches thinner. The center button has changed too, having a concaved button for your selection, which makes it very easy to use and place your thumb without looking. This new Nano, with the same body shape, now has a longer battery life. Apple claims that it will last 24 hours, but I was able to get just over 25 hours of playtime – Which is nice.

The Nano comes with similar features as the previous version such as Volume Limit, Stopwatch, Screen Lock, and support for the Nike + iPod Sport Kit, but now has a music search function, a brighter screen (40% brighter), improved sound quality (in my opinion), and the newly redesigned headphones.

Also, the bottom of this unit has changed slightly. The headphone jack and the sync port are slightly farther apart, which eliminated some of my old accessories, which made me slightly disappointed.

In regards to syncing, this unit actually takes longer to sync than my old Nano. To sync 2GB on the first generation took roughly 5 minutes, but with the 2nd generation of newly designed Nano’s, it took almost 10 minutes to do 2 gigs. This seems to be the common findings amongst other 2nd generation Nano owners as well. They did upgrade the software right after the release, but I have not noticed a difference in syncing.

A downside that the Nano did not get that the 5th Generation Ver. 2.0 of the iPod received was the option to purchase games from iTunes. Hopefully this will be something that will change in the future for the Nano. Also, the new packaging, which is environmentally friendly, does not have a CD version of iTunes included in the packaging, which is going to disappoint first time iPod Nano buyers.

As a fan of the Mini and a converter to the Nano, I love this design. I really do. I think the aluminum casing is the way to go. I was really reluctant to give my Mini up for the Nano, but now that the redesigned Nano is this way, it is a perfect blend of the two. I highly recommended this device to Apple lovers and new MP3 enthusiasts alike.

Pros:
-Brighter screen
-Better sound
-Aluminum scratch-resistant casing
-Concave select button
-Amazing battery-life: 24 hours plus!
-Search features
-New colors to choose from

Cons
-Still no built in FM tuner
-Does not play movies
-No games through iTunes
-Sync port and headphone jack put farther apart not allowing old accessory use

a thorough review of the new ipod nano
Review created: 11/07/06
30 of 40 people found this review helpful.

I received my new 2nd generation nano from the apple store the other day, and have spent a lot of time getting to know it. I like it a lot, and I think it'll be the best-selling iPod yet.

Like all iPods, it is easy to learn and easy to use, has EXCELLENT sound quality, and is a real pleasure to use.

THE NEW NANO COMPARED TO THE FIRST GENERATION NANO

This new 2nd generation nano is much improved over the 1st generation model, which came out in September 2005.

* BETTER SCREEN: The screen is noticably brighter (though not any larger). This is especially nice for viewing photos.

* BETTER BATTERY: A fully charged battery will power the nano for up to 24 hours, compared to only 12 for the 1st generation nano. (These tests are done under artificial conditions, actual battery life is shorter - but it remains true that the new nano has double the battery life of the old one.)

* BETTER CASING: The casing of the first generation nano was soft plastic, which accumulated scratches very quickly and didn't hide them well. The second generation nano has an andonized aluminum casing - the same material used to make the tough-as-nails iPod mini, which Apple discontinued when the first generation nano came out last year. This material is very scratch-resistant and durable.

* COLORS: The new nano comes in a variety of colors (though not all capacities have all color options; the high-end 8 gigabyte nano comes only in black). The first generation nano came in two colors - black and white. The pink ipod mini has been fetching a high price on eBay since it was discontinued last fall; I think that will change, now that you can get a new 4 gigabyte nano in the same pink for only $200.

* BETTER SEARCHING: The menu structure on the new nano allows for more convenient searching.

* BETTER EARPHONES: Most reviews of previous ipods complain about the earbuds. Starting now, Apple is shipping improved earbuds with all nanos and video ipods. They are not AWESOME, and you still may want to buy some nicer earphones. But they are better than the previous ones, and for most folks, they will probably be just fine.

* BIGGER CAPACITY FOR THE MONEY: At each price point, the new nano provides DOUBLE the capacity as the first generation nano. For example, the first generation nano cost $200 for 2 gigabytes of storage; the second generation is $200 for 4 gigabytes of storage.

* ACCESSORIES: The new nano has the same dock connector that all ipods have (except the ipod shuffle), so it will work with virtually all accessories with a dock connector. The placement of the dock connector and headphone jack is SLIGHTLY different from the previous ipod nano, so certain accessories designed for the first generation nano may not work with the new one. For example, a case that has an opening on the bottom for the headphone jack - the opening will be in the wrong place.

CONCLUSION

The new ipod nano is a great product at a reasonable price (compared to flash-based players on the market now). It has great battery life, a small but bright and readable color display, excellent sound quality, a very durable and scratch-resistant casing, and comes in a nice selection of colors and capacities. And like all ipods, it has a high "cool factor", it's intuitively designed and a real pleasure to use.

I bought this Ipod, because i really needed something to do while working out and when just bored. I have found this Ipod to be very good, but there are some things i don't like.
1. The clickwheel is very loud, and easy to get dirty.

2. The screen is small, and very hard to clean, while collecting dust VERY
easily.

3. Apple says battery life is 24 hours. I don't know which battery they used, but not the one used in mine. The battery lasts between 10-13 hours. Still, this is an improvement over the last generation. My daughter has one, and her battery lasts 6-8 hours only. Also, cases and stuff is very expensive. I would definately reccomend this ipod, as it holds enough songs for most people (500), and it is only $149 dollars. Also, i would NOT buy it off ebay. I bought an Ipod Shuffle last year, and it turns out, it was stolen.
I really like that the screen is very bright, and how small it is, yet i never have a hard time finding it, like i thought i would.
I would recomend this ipod definately.

Apple has totally revamped the iPod nano, and made the coolest mp3 player even better. With a brighter display, a thinner design, longer battery life, anodized aluminum case similar to the mini and 5 different colors, Apple has addressed the problems that plagued the 1st gen nano and increased capacity as well.

  Terrible Product & Customer Service

I recently bought a IPOD from Denver IPOD Supply Company and it was suppose to be factory sealed. Well first of all the product was sealed with a white label, but not factory sealed. I did not have a chance to open the product immediately. When I did open the product, it would not power up. I have never owned a IPOD, so I figured I would charge it to see if it would then power up. When the IPOD was charging, the display was black, but you could see that it said do not disconnect. It said this for several days. So I left it charging. Finally I just went ahead and disconnected it, and it still would not power on, or power off, and the display had a line in it. So needless to say I contacted the Denver IPOD Supply Company, and they are now telling me too bad, they have a 7 day return policy! I should have known better, when they sent me the IPOD and it came with a notice with RED BOLD ALL CAPS writing that said "WARNING: DO NOT LEAVE NEGATIVE OR NEUTRAL FEEDBACK BEFORE CONTACTING US FIRST. LEAVING US NEGATIVE OR NEUTRAL FEEDBACK VOIDS THE RETURN POLICY!" No where on this paper does it say that there is a 7 day return policy! Whatever you do, do not purchase an IPOD from this company. They clearly are selling defective merchandise!

It served me well for too years. Its solid dropped it many times. Used many for running and other exercising activities. Too bad it broke. But you can get a pretty good return by selling it on ebay for at least 30 bucks for a broken Ipod.

Sell it now while its worth something and then just buy one that works:)

Wish it came with a clip like the shuffle for running and workout:(

  Ipod Nano 2gb 2nd gen
Review created: 01/19/08
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Things I like about the ipod nano obviously are what others like. The portability (Slim), it's sleek, powerful and holds a ton of songs, very easy to make playlists from the Itunes software. Itunes is a pretty decent program although any songs bought from Itunes is locked to your ipod only. Can't use them in your phone, and other mp3 players you may own. Which is complete BS.

The battery life on the ipod is pretty decent and should come with a wall charger as well as the usb connection cable to charge since you obviously don't have access to a computer at all times. I love that these don't use batteries at least in the disposable sense.

Something I think they should work on is letting you make a playlist outside the computer a little easier. I'm still a little shaky on the "On the Go" playlists you can do directly on the ipod. It should just be a simple "Click on the songs you want in your playlist". That would make it easier to listen to what you want. Especially if you have a Ipod Video or larger storage ipod.

I don't know if it's just my ipod or what, but every pair of headphones (Non Apple) I've hooked up to the ipod, seems to jiggle it's way out of the hole. Like they don't click in quite right like Apples headphones. Maybe it's only my ipod but I'd definately like to change to some black Sony or bose headphones in the future.

One thing with the mp3's that you can put on this device that makes me mad is their own compression file. M4a's are a pain in the butt. If you want a lot of music on your Itunes library and you dump all your old CD's onto it, it converts all of them into M4a files or AAC format. This isn't a big deal if you only plan on using your ipod and don't want to use the music files for other mp3 players as most mp3 players don't support m4a's. Why can't everyone just use mp3's?

Another pet peeve of mine is the amount of hassle it is to share music with others. Sure some say it's "illegal", but if my friend wanted me to have a cd he could just give it to me. With an ipod, it's an involved process to find that mp3 or m4a file. And that's only if they have their ipod set to hard disk usage so it shows up on "My Computer".

Other than those little things, I love my ipod. It's pretty much the best thing that's happened to music since the CD. Having 2000 songs in your pocket at the touch of a button in a sleek platform is astounding. We go back like 7 years and see people running with CD players with electronic skip protection, eating up batteries, and the bulkiness of it all, it's just great to see where we've come from in terms of portability. Goodbye wallets of CD's and searching through them to find what you want, than after finding it, find out your cd is scratched. Yep, Ipod is here to stay.

Get one for FREE!!! Have a look at this video first:

Just take 2 minutes and read this. This is very EASY to do! It literally takes 10 minutes to setup. Simply follow the steps below. I promise you, this is 100% real. I wouldn't jeopardize my eBay account status if this was a scam. My feedback is real and I will answer you on any question! Here is what you do. Click on the link below, register, pick an account type (referral is the easiest) and complete just 1 offer (Very important that you complete the 1 offer otherwise your account will sit in limbo until you do). This is not like other sites where you need to complete one offer on 2 or 3 different pages!!! And a lot of these offers are FREE trials with nothing else to buy...No commitments!!!

There are plenty of cool offers to choose from such as Blockbuster online, Stamp.com, Netflix, Gamefly which are services you would regularly sign up for anyways and their all secure networks, why not use them to get a free PS3 System or cash (I did the Netflix deal). Look at the offers and choose the one that works for you. After signing up and completing your one offer, simply refer 8-13 people (depending on the FREE prize you choose) to do the same under your link (just post the same thing as I have on eBay, and you'll get your referrals before the auction even ends.)

Then they will ship your PS3 System or your selected item for free, I chose the PS3 80gb System. No Joke, 100% REAL!!! The reason these companies make money, is because most people don't bother getting all the referrals. All you have to do is post it on EBAY! They use us as advertisement by word of mouth which saves them tons of money which goes toward yours and my free gift. These are legit companies such as Blockbuster, Netflix, Gamefly etc... You can copy my listing if you want. You must use your own authentic link though. You will get your own personal link after your orders placed.

Step 1: Click this link: http://www.YourPS34free.com/index.php?ref=4243885

Step 2: Sign up and chose an account type (Referral is the easiest and best).

Step 3: Complete just 1 offer (like Blockbuster or Stamps.com) and refer up to 13 people to do the same (use eBay! Do what I did, copy my ad).

Step 4: Receive your PS3 System for FREE!!!!!!!!!! (Even The Shipping Is Free!!!)

The whole ebay internet purchase seemed a little bit like cyberspace. That may be because I purchased something that I have never received. The seller gave me a strike against me for not paying. The money was paid through paypal. I cannot get ebay to remove the strike for non payment and I cannot get the seller to actually send me the item purchased. Would I do it again...probably not. If I go into a store I can walk out with the item I paid for.

  Not What I Expected

This Ipod Nano was sent quickly after seller recieved payment, however, for 100 dollars, it is not what I expected. This was is first purchase on ebay, so perhaps I did not know exactly what questions to ask when making a purchase.

I am disspointed that the product is scratched and dented from what appears to be a few possible incidents of being dropped on the ground.

The worst problem with this product is that the buttons (menu, forward, backward, play/pause) do not always work and i have to wait until the device is in the 'mood' to let me use it properly. I even let my technologically sound children have a go at getting the device to work properly and they said "mom, its broken".

Next time, I will definitely pay the extra money to go the store and purchase full price.

The best overall iPod design at a reasonable price
Review created: 09/25/06

This iPod is even more durable than the first generation because they adopted the aluminum casing concept from the earlier mini iPod. The longer battery life (24 hours) on this second generation is killer, even though the first gen was 16+ hours already.

I use mine for swimming, I bought an otterbox and some waterproof headphones and the world is great. I hear for runners these things are great with armbands.

The Nano is the coolest mp3 player on the market, period.
