vulgarity, a seriously nuclear family and class wars
Review created: 10/04/06

The thing I like best about Angus Oblong's cartoon series is his wickedly funny adaptation of the class wars. His family, the Oblongs, are the cheerily downtrodden dregs of their society. Misshapen from exposure to toxic chemicals, the family ekes out a living while being cheated and spat on by the 'Hill people,' their more affluent neighbors on the hills above them. The Oblongs and other valley dwellers, including a brilliantly sketched cast of school-aged misfits, must cope with their poverty, and do so by supporting one another (frequently with far more moral understanding than the obnoxious Hill people) and a series of funny, if ill-fated, pranks.

Bob Oblong, the father, is voiced to all his delusionally cheerful glory by SNL's Will Ferrell. His wife, Pickles, a hard-drinking stay-at-home mom (unless she's at the bar) is voiced by Jean Smart. Biff & Chip, conjoined, seventeen-year-old twins sharing three legs and three butt cheeks, are the next oldest Oblongs. Milo, arguably the main character of the show, a 'pathologically high-spirited' eight-year-old child with a perma-squint, is voiced by Pamela Segal Aldon (of King of the Hill.) The youngest, a sweet-voiced waif with a huge, warty growth on her head is Beth, voiced by Jeannie Ellias.

For all the offensive content, and this is offensive, the show delievers a hilarious, superbly typified example of subversive class-warfare. It's visually fun, satirical and intellectually satisfying.

And Pickles falls down drunk a lot, which is a bonus. How could you hate a show with an episode devoted to Velva, a satrical mock of Zena, with the attendant sex jokes?

The Oblongs -- very twisted & weird -- MUST SEE!

A friend turned me on to this twisted series, and once I viewed it I decided I must have a copy to call my own. I purchased this copy on eBay and was not disappointed. The Oblongs, a bizarre anime series created by a guy whose name really is "Oblong," is about the lives of a family affected by the toxic effluent from a chen=mical factory. The stories address social class issues in a hilarious yet scathing way, and the characters are compellingly weird but relevant. The Oblongs have no reverence and have fun with everything. No sacred cows here! A wonderful romp through political incorrectness.

i love this series. i had been looking for it ofr about 6 months when i stumble across it. here on ebay. and i am a hughe fan of obscure cancelled animation, so at the price i gave it was a steal. and just rememebr "you you may control my mind... but you will never control my ass"- Milo Oblong

if you've never seen it the show is helmed by Will ferrell as the father Bob a torso and nothing more. as thi family lives what they consider t normal life living below the valley and globocide. so check it out and laugh till puke. great family fun lmao

Very funny, offbeat animated comedy. Will Ferrell does many of the voices in the show and has great range.

If you like mature animated shows, this is for you!

I've always loved animated shows aimed at a mature or adult audience such as Family Guy and South Park, and The Oblongs is no exception. My girlfriend turned me onto this show a few years ago, and I was instantly hooked! It's a pity that it only lasted a mere 13 episodes. The DVD set contains the entire run and boasts a great set of extra content including interviews with the creator, Angus Oblong (man, is this guy odd!), the producers, and most of the voice actors. I was hoping that the DVD set would sell like hotcakes and usher in a revival of the show, but the interviews with Angus Oblong make it pretty obvious that he wasn't happy with the direction the show had taken and that it was much different than he wanted it to go. Well, it's a really great, funny, and oddball show with the voice talents of SNL's Will Farrell and King of the Hill's Pamela Segall Adlon that's not to be missed.

This is a short-lived show, but the episodes are classic, funny and definitely for adults. I was so glad to hear about the DVD! I enjoy all the episodes and watch them whenever I need a pick-me-up.

  Holy $hit It's The OBLONGS!

If you like Adult Swim toons, well, GOOD Adult Swim, NOT ATHF or Lucy Daughter of the Devil or any of that other gay $hit, you should like this. I guess GOOD Adult Swim should be clarified, Frisky Dingo, Venture Brothers, Morel Orel, and Robot Chicken. This show is about a family of fun loving deformed poor folk (EWW) that get by on love. Mom is a bald alcoholic slut, dad is an armless, legless horn dog. They have 3, or maybe 4, kids. The oldest kid(s) is a siamese twin, one of them is gay I'm pretty sure, the middle kid has a gimpy eye and may very well be gay as well. Last but not least, the youngest one has a growth on her head that appears to be a herpefied dong, TASTY! The series is based off of characters from a book called Creep Susie also by creator Angus Oblong. For news on upcoming appearances or a session of clowny frotting check his website. www.angusoblong.com He usually has lots of wonderful politically incorrect artwork for sale and WILL let you buy him a drink!

Love the offbeat humor of the Oblongs and recently bought the DVD series to watch again and again. Bought it to replace a poor quality VHS tape purchased long ago on eBay for more money. Seller of the DVD series offered a great price compared to other listings and had free shipping so I just had to buy it!

  Amusing, moderately dark, satirical comedy
Review created: 05/14/09
by:

If you've never seen the Oblongs, you've missed out. Think 'The Simpsons', mutated and on crack. I watched it on Adult Swim years ago, and was thrilled to finally find it on DVD. The series was canceled after the first season, so please bear that in mind if you order the full series; there were only 13 episodes, so it's only a 2-disc set.

The series revolves around the Oblong family; Bob, Pickles, Chip, Biff, Milo, Beth, Scottie, and an unnamed cat who chain smokes. Peripherally, it revolves around the world they live in. The Oblong family lives in the town of Hill Valley, which emcompasses the Hills and the Valley. Rich people live in the Hills, poor people live in the Valley. Valley folk tend to mutate. Bob has no limbs; Chip and Biff are siamese twins; Beth has a vaguely phallic thing growing out of her head. You get used to it, though.

If you've read Angus Oblong's 'Creepy Susie' stories, you'll be both pleased and vaguely disappointed by this series. The writers very much softened Mr. Oblong's dark, satirical vision and family-friendlied it. Some characters appear (Susie, Helga, Milo) but they've changed quite a bit. Helga in the stories was delusional, vengeful, and homicidal. Helga in the series is delusional, short-tempered, and lacking in personal hygiene. Most (but not all) sexual overtones are gone. This isn't totally a bad thing; I can feel reasonably comfortable watching the series with my kids; but some fans of the stories may feel gypped. All in all, it's a great little series and one I would recommend to fans of 'Invader Zim', 'Happy Tree Friends', or 'Robot Chicken'; also to readers of 'Lenore', 'Squee', or 'Emily the Strange'. Or pretty much anyone with a dark, twisted sense of humour.

This is one of my favorite cartoons. Absolutely fantastic! It has its place in my collection right next to "The Tijuana Toads" , "The Ant And The Aardvark" and "The Tick".

  review of Oblongs DVD....
Review created: 12/25/08(updated 01/27/09)

This is a great cartoon series if you can get into it. It took me a few times to really start liking it, it grows on you. However The DVD's are on DL disks(double layer), which some machines may have trouble playing them. Especially older Dvd models. I have a relatively newer machine and am still having problems getting it to play. (God forbid thats why the seller sold it). Otherwise I'm happy to have the whole and only 1st season on DVD. I recommend this series to anybody that enjoys cartoons meant for the older set, and considers themselves to have a good sense of humor. Hope this review helps somebody.
Thanks,
N
