Album Notes Personnel includes: Marshall Crenshaw (vocals, synthesizer, drums); Robert Crenshaw (vocals, piano). Includes liner notes by Marshall Crenshaw. Subtitled "Battery Powered Home Demos & Curios (1979-198?)," this 15-song CD is filled with early and alternate versions of familiar songs. The always delightful "You're My Favorite Waste Of Time" is a joy to hear in its demo form. THE 9 VOLT YEARS is well sequenced and rich with drama. A few of these songs were written with or by Marshall's brother, Robert, who also played drums in Crenshaw's band throughout the '80s. Instrumentals add resonance and variety to the set. One in particular, "Bruce Is King," is actually a vast improvement over DOWNTOWN's (lyrically shaky) "Blues Is King." Far from an indulgence, 9 VOLT YEARS hangs together perfectly as a full album experience, brimming with hypnotic pop smarts and confidence.
Editorial Reviews Someday, some way, this power-pop craftsman will get the career overview he deserves. In the meantime, this bundle of lo-fi early work, B sides and flotsam will suffice....9 VOLT recalls an era when a chiming guitar, a winsome voice, and a charming hook could soothe any romantic despair... - Rating: B+ Entertainment Weekly (09/04/1998)
