Two years ago, Apple revolutionized mobile phones, and the competition is still scrambling. So far, the only real contender is the just-released (and still immature) Palm Pre. The new iPhone 3GS lengthens Apple's lead.
When we first used the original iPhone, we were amazed at how much a little phone could do, and how well it did it. Over the ensuing years, we've gotten used to these capabilities, and a subtle shift has taken place: When it was new, we looked at the iPhone as a phone that did a lot of neat things, but two years later, we see it as a handheld, networked computer that happens to have phone service. So we've become more demanding. Our previous iPhone started to feel slower, but it hadn't changed; our expectations did.
The iPhone 3GS is a phone (and computer) for the impatient. The previous 3G still works fine, and the new 3.0 software brings it great features, but the iPhone 3GS works faster. And the iPhone 3GS also has extra features — video recording, Voice Control, compass and VoiceOver — but its main benefit is raw speed. Everything you do happens faster: Spotlight search results, app startup, switching to email, loading web pages, making notes.
If you already have an iPhone, should you upgrade? It depends on what you need, and what AT&T and Apple will charge you.
For original iPhone owners, this is a good time to update: the new phone is faster, has a compass-assisted GPS, has up to four times as much storage for your music, has much better voice call quality and a louder speakerphone, and offers compelling new features like video recording, autofocus and Voice Control.
The free OS 3.0 update brings an original iPhone many new features, such as copy-and-paste, voice memos, Spotlight, voice memos and landscape keyboards. But if you want MMS or Internet tethering (when AT&T is ready), stereo Bluetooth or Bluetooth peer-to-peer gaming, you need new hardware — either a 3G or the newer, faster, more feature rich 3GS. As a two-year (or more) AT&T customer, you'll probably qualify for heavily discounted pricing if you're willing to renew your service contract.
If you already have an iPhone 3G, however, you may have to pay full retail price ($599 or $699), plus AT&T's upgrade fees, plus tax. Check with AT&T to see what it would cost you — they're offering discounts to some customers.
If you make heavy use of your iPhone every day, or if you will benefit from the improved photographic hardare, the faster 3GS may well be worth the premium to upgrade. Its imaging is a major step up, and its speed boost is real; it's especially noticeable when multitasking. Switching apps could be slow with the first two iPhones; each time you switched, you had to launch an app again, and those seconds add up. The 3GS's speed really minimizes this effect. We used to limit our task switching due to launch overhead, but in the past week, we have been bouncing among apps with abandon.
New customers, choosing between the $99 iPhone 3G and the $199 iPhone 3GS, should just get the 3GS. It's twice as fast, has twice the storage, offers amazing voice control and has a much better camera that does video, too. There's just no good reason to cheap out.
Last year, we said that those with a traditional mobile phone would find iPhone 3G compelling. This year, it's more of the same: the iPhone has great features and the best user experience around, and it benefits from two years of steady improvements and maturation, plus the huge advantage of a well-understood

  iPhone 3Gs - Improves on greatness/OS 3.0 makes a dream
Review created: 06/17/09(updated 07/15/09)
114 of 131 people found this review helpful.

Please also read my reviews of the iPhone 1.0 & 3G.

I've owned a cellphone since 1992. I've always had a "top of the line phone" (I've always had AT&T = formerly Cingular = formerly BellSouth Mobility)

In 17 years having cellphones, I've had over 100 (Yes 100+) different models & makes

The iPhone uses GSM - an international standard technology for cellphones. Verizon & Sprint use CDMA (& variants) - this technology is found in very few places widespread outside the USA & Europe.

One minor hardware complaint about the iPhone has been addressed by Apple - the new iPhone 3GS has an oil resistant coating - making it easier to clean and less "smudgeable"

The 3.0 iPhone OS is very stable. The addition of copy & paste, video, & tethering make "jailbreaking" completely unnecessary (Tethering is promised by AT&T in the US later)

I haven't had signal issues w/ many phones, it's always clumsy interfaces.

Every phone I've ever had, no matter how long I've had it - I've had a problem placing a call on hold & answering another call or joining a call into a 3-way. The iPhone interface is so well designed features are clearly labeled - I don't have that problem

I had an HP iPaq 6515 - I hated the keyboard. (Which is similar in design to Palm & Blackberry smartphones w/ physical keyboards) Physical keyboards on cellphones are hard to see, crowded w/ characters & difficult to use w/ my large fingers. iPhone users should try the pogo stylus if they have issues, but give it it time - you will become proficient within a few weeks

The camera on my iPhone 1.0 & 3G was great. The camera on the new iPhone is stunning though. I see myself taking even more pictures. I use the HP iPrint app to print my photos out. The side by side comparison is noticeable from the 1st gen iPhone camera. The viewfinder & capture buttons are crystal clear. It's easy to transfer photos from iPhone to computer for editing

Unlike most smartphones - that have Windows Mobile, the iPhone has an intuitive interface that's easy to understand & navigate. There's no need to read a manual; it's just simple to understand. A Blackberry makes me ask, "where do I go?" & "what do I do?""

The iPhone 3GS has a faster processor (600Mhz vs 433Mhz) & more RAM (256MB vs 128MB). This makes the iPhone 3GS feel significantly snappier.

Because an iPhone uses standard iPod sync & charge cables, accessories are easy to find.

Battery life is very good & improved from the previous generations of iPhones; even when utilizing power draining features like Wifi & Bluetooth.

I can actually use the calculator on an iPhone, unlike on other cell phones where you have to figure out corresponding keys

The Google Maps feature is amazing w/ the ability to use satellite data, the addition of the compass & GPS pinpoints your location w/ amazing accuracy & even better than dedicated GPS devices. The GPS integration w/ LocateMe is awesome

My complaints:

- Edge data network is acceptable & what I have to connect to the most often but I still have to pay for 3G data access = $10 more each month

- FM transmitters don't work well due to interference

- AT&T has limited some features (at least initially)

The new iPhone is definitely worth the upgrade. I now have enough room to back up the important parts of my hard drive to the iPhone, thanks to the 32GB capacity. I have right at 8GB of music & 6GB of pictures, text message, apps, etc - so the 32GB model will come in handy for me

  iPhone 3GS 16GB

The iPhone is a great phone to own, if you can handle the workarounds and technotalk required to get the most out of it.

For the layman or technically incompetent, keep away. You are better off buying a Blackberry or Nokia Touchscreen Smartphone which do not require a high level of technical understanding.

If you plan to buy a 3GS, make you sure get one that is carrier unlocked by the Apple Factory. This way you can jailbreak the latest version easily and not have to worry about the carrier unlock (which is always months behind the jailbreak).

Likes:
1. Intuitive interface
2. Sleek artistic design
3. Fast loading of applications
4. Compass and Video

Dislikes:
1. Slippery to hold, make sure you get a case for it
2. Apple does not like people unlocking or jailbreaking their iPhones, so each release becomes even more difficult to unlock/jailbreak
3. No Bluetooth synchronisation with MacBook, must use USB cable
4. Forced to jailbreak iPhone to run homebrew apps and customise the Desktop/Springboard
5. No Garmin or TomTom GPS software for Satellite Navigation. Forced to use Google Maps. This means you do not have voice directions whilst driving a route, you are forced to look at the screen to navigate.
6. Java not supported. Forced to use homebrew Java with Cydia.
7. Cannot upgrade to V3.1.2 at the moment, because carrier Unlock does not exist yet.

  Modest improvements--still lacking in areas
25 of 26 people found this review helpful.

I've owned all iterations of the iPhone--and this is by far the one I was most impressed with. The switch from the 3g-->3gS puts the previous 1st-->3g jump to shame.

The 3gS variants are almost identical to the previous 3G iPhones. The major changes are NOT cosmetic in nature. The CPU has been improved from 412mhz to 600mhz, the ram has been doubled, a new graphics chip has been installed (providing OpenGL support), a new camera, and an internal compass has been built in (see more). Sadly, there is STILL no 3rd party routing software available--google maps is sufficient though.

Thoughts: 3G vs. 3G S

1. The battery life for both is rather similar. SLIGHT improvement in the 3G S.
2. The LCD digitizer (touchscreen) is practically the same with both editions--3G seems brighter.
3. Dimensions and case sizes are nearly identical--3G S is a bit thinner. The engravings on the back are different, but you're getting the same pretty case from the 3G.
4. Unaided GPS (without AT&T tower assistance) is just about as weak in both models... but the 3G S sports an internal compass, allowing for amazing accuracy and directional navigation while hiking and "street-walking". Hands down, the best new addition to the 3G S.
5. The new CPU and graphics chip combine for SIGNIFICANTLY decreased loading times when partaking in both graphically intensive gaming, and everyday activities (web browser loading). In games, this contributes to increased frame rates which are highly noticeable.
6. The internal camera has been boosted from a paltry 2mp to an adequate 3mp. It's not spectacular, but it's in line with current offerings. It features autofocus, which is a very nice addition. FINALLY, users have built-in video recording capability without going to extreme lengths.

What is disturbing about this model:

1. Do NOT let it overheat. Make sure you keep it charged in a cool location with sufficient airflow. This means DON'T put it on fabric. Don't overcharge, and be sure to inspect (check for overheating) regularly. The first time it overheats (it will be HOT to the touch), the battery output will GREATLY diminish (1/2 to 1/3 capacity), and should be changed through Apple.
2. There is NO apple-supplied application for checking and resetting the iPhone battery. This is provided for MacBooks, but not the iPod line
3. As with all iPhone models, buy a case--a Zagg InvisibleShield to protect it from scratches and the odd bump/bruise--or a silicone case--I highly recommend a screen protector. iPhones are FRAGILE (see below).
4. Internal components are flush with the case, and simple dents will cause components/features to fail.
5. DO NOT attempt to open ANY iPhone model for repair if you do not have experience--the cases/trim are prone to dents/bends, and you are likely to scratch/damage internal components if you attempt to replace the digitizer or battery yourself (the most common repairs). It is better to take them directly to Apple stores for repair.
6. Based on who you talk to, Apple will ONLY honor the 1 year manufacturer warranty if the iPhone is linked to an AT&T contract. If you have Jailbroken/Unlocked your iPhone, reset it to factory firmware and specifications before attempting to deal with Apple Repair.
7. No external HD capacity detected--camera only.
8. You have to deal with iTunes to activate and sync music.
9. Still no front-based camera for video-conferencing... very important to business users.

Hope this helped

Excellent phone overall! 5-star phone and is by far worth the money! This phone not only can call people but it is a computer/laptop device at your finger tips and not only is it that, it is also an advanced high-tech ipod! This phone combines all phones into one with the ipod, the storing size, the phone feature, the apps, the apps especially makes the phone an A+ especially when you get to make them and share them with the world also! This phone is astonishing and if you had the money to either buy a regular phone or an iphone, I would pick the iphone in a heart beat!! You can download apps, music, movies, play the apps and play them against others live just at your finger tips. It is just like an online community except you play games and compete for number one!! This phone has so many features, 2x faster loading speed, more online apps, compass, video recording, the 3+ megapixel camera with autofocus, landscape texting mode, voice automated dialing, voice activated ipod playing (can play a simple song by just saying it!!), and the touch screen itself!! This phone, A++ and I praise apple for making these phones. outstanding, BUY IT TODAY OR YOU WILL REGRET IT, trust me, it will probably be the best decision you have made, I have one myself and I can't keep myself off of it, it is SO addicting and fun!! BUY, BUY, BUY, BUY!!!!

  My second iPhone...
Review created: 01/03/10
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is my second iPhone. I just replaced my original iPhone with this 3GS model.

This is still the smartphone that works! I have tried other smartphones and most if not all pale in comparison. The iPhone just flat works. The different applications work like they should, simple, quick, no learning curve. Spend about 10 minutes fumbling around the interface and you'll practically be a pro.

The biggest change I see in this phone is the back is now plastic. The plastic probably improves reception (the old one needed some help in this area) and it probably also helps the GPS. I don't mind the new back, it feels good in my hands, is a bit thinner, and the contour makes it easier to hold. Although it doesn't look as good as the old back, it still looks pretty darn good. The phone still has a nice quality feel to it. The screen is still the star of the show, and as far as I can tell, it hasn't changed.

The phone seems to have improved a bit, I find it easier to hear, the reception seems a improved, and the speaker seems a bit louder. The Candy Bar isn't the best design if you ask me(I'm partial to flip phones)but it's the best way to implement this type of interface. The screen still gets greasy, but with this new model they have done something to the screen and it wipes clean much easier than the old model did.

Was the upgrade worth it? I don't know. It launches apps faster(although it's not super noticeable unless you do a direct side by side), it has a true GPS(it does find my position quicker, but it's not that much better than the old way), it has a compass(cool...but really...), voice control(I've never used it), more mp camera(just for quick snaps, nothing serious). The changes in the OS are certainly welcome, but those are available to all iPhone users. The battery life seems a bit less than the original too. I like a lot about the new phone, but the changes are evolutionary and not revolutionary.

Like I said in my first review, there is no way I though I would ever own an iPhone. Now I am on to my second one, and have a hard time with things when I manage to forget it.

  iPhone 3GS Review
Review created: 06/26/09

There's a reason why Apple called this the iPhone 3GS for Speed and not the 3GC for "compass" or 3GV for "video recording." Speed is the central upgrade here, and probably is the single biggest reason you would upgrade to a 3GS from a 3G. And if you're coming in as a virgin iPhone user, there's definitely no question: The 3GS is worth an extra $100.

That declaration may be weird to most of us since we usually look for features, and not specs, when we're evaluating phones—and iPhone 3GS doesn't blow us out in the feature department. Instead, it's like getting a bigger TV or a faster car. Your old machine works just fine, but once you've tried the new one for a week, you'll never want to go back, even if it costs you a little extra.
Like we said, from the outside the 3GS is exactly the same as the 3G. It's slightly heavier and has glossy text on the back, but if Steve Jobs whipped one out in public before it was announced, you wouldn't have been able to tell the difference.

By holding the 3GS next to the 3G, you'll notice that the screen is slightly more reflective because of the new fingerprint resistant oleophobic coating. It even has a little bit of a rainbow effect if you reflect a monitor with it. Surprisingly, the coating actually works in preventing a good deal of fingerprints and face grease, and it allows the phone to still be smooth and usable even if there are fingerprints on the surface.
The shot above illustrates the fact. The two phones may look similar in how much finger and face grease are on the screen, but the iPhone 3GS is still usable and doesn't have the problem of "sticking" in certain areas that are slightly greasier. It's also easier to clean just by wiping on your shirt. The glass treatment won't eliminate smudging from your bodily secretions altogether, but it's a very useful improvement for something you're touching all the time.
But as a whole, the iPhone 3GS is the best all-around smartphone available. If you're looking for a refined, augmented version of what you already know, a phone that, not for nothing, runs all the tens of thousands of apps on the App Store, choose the iPhone 3GS.

Apple iphone 3GS 16 GB Black
Review created: 06/12/10

I bought the Apple iphone 3GS 16 GB Black three weeks ago and was immediately impressed with the number of features available on this inexpensive phone. It has a 1M-pixel camera, video camera, and speakerphone. The NewPhone's size is perfect for carrying in a pocket and the battery has a pretty good lifespan of roughly 4 hours. My only complaint is that the menu system on the phone makes you click four times before you can find someone in the address book, set an alarm, or perform a additional functions. Other phones I've owned have simpler menus and get you to important features easily. Overall, I'd recommend the phone if you're on a budget.

  iPhone 3gs unlocked/jailbroken

So the phone is great, hands down the best out. The only real issue is the fact that it is a tethered unlock. What this means is that if for any reason you restart the phone or the battery dies the phone goes back into recovery mode and you HAVE to hook it back up to a computer and unlock it again. Another issue I had was that when I received the phone and plugged it into my cpu via USB iTunes would not recognize it. I received the following message: "iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPhone 'iPhone'. Go to the Summary tab in iPhone preferences and click Restore to restore this iPhone to factory settings." The problem is if you restore the phone iTunes now automatically updates it to the newest software i.e. 3.1.3 which is not unlockable. It took me the better part of a day to find a solution to this problem and for any of you that may run across it the answer is this:

DO NOT RESTORE!!!! just download and install i-funbox http://i-funbox.com/ Connect your iPhone, Go and find ?iTunesDB? using i-funbox and delete it, Open iTunes on your PC\Mac and Walla!!! You're back to Syncing and no more Messages! Enjoy:)

This is real and works perfectly! Another option would be to change the DOS code on your iPhone using Mobile Terminal, but that is a lot harder.

Cheers!

The fastest iphone ever yet. Great phone for those who follow iphone from the beginning. Speed is relatively much faster at 600MHz and RAM at 256.
So far so good. And finally, the VIDEO RECORDING and a better 3.2 megapixel camera resolution (apple should've upgraded it to at least 5.0)
Nevertheless, its just awesome to have a COMPUTER, PSP/WII/NINTENDO DS, DIGITAL CAMERA/CAMCORDER and of course A CELLPHONE all in a small electronic gadget :):):)
Can't wait for the next iphone which will HAVE A DUAL CORE PROCESSOR :)

Like: many thing.
1- The sensitivity of the touchscreen.
2- The Shape of the Design.
3- The numbers of Apps & Games (millions of apps in apple store)
4- flexibility of programing ( every thing you change or repair it by 3d party apps)
5- The contrast and brightness of the screen amazing.

Dislike:
1- Many Deficiencies need for 3d apps, like zoom camera and bluetooth.
2- There is no sec camera in the front for video call
3- The Back plastic case is so sensitive for scratchs.
4- Battery live only 8 to 10 hours for normal use.
5- Ituns is the worst program for media transfer.

(Sorry for my poor English)

DO NOT BUY FROM UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANES it was a total rip-off, this guy has misleading titles, misleading information, and misleading pictures. it said Apple iphone 3GS 16 GB Black (Unlocked)and it was only $10, so i looked at the page, and it said "bidding is only for envelopes, with letters inside" like only people who are going to actually pay should bid, then it took over a month to show up. then when it showed up, it was literally an envelope with a letter inside. DO NOT BUY FROM UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANES

The Iphone 3GS is an excellent PDA with many useful free applications. Navigation is excellent and set-up is generally easy. Small little quirks with adding some bluetooth devices and battery life, depending on how you are using the internet and email on your device. I have been very satisfied and upgraded from the 3G to 3GS to take advantage of the built in video recording and more disk space. It is sleek and generally pretty durable, although I keep mine protected in a case and with a screen protector, which I recommend to all. It is a very productive tool for assisting those who want to be productive and are looking for more than just a phone.

  iphone 3gs
Review created: 11/14/09

Three years after the first rumors of an Apple cell phone began to make the rounds, the iPhone continues to garner huge buzz, long lines, and a growing share of the cell phone market. And as we approach the second anniversary of the first model's frenzied launch day, Apple drops the newest model in our laps. The iPhone 3GS, which will hit stores June 19, promises faster processing and network speeds, extended battery life, more memory, and additional features. It's enough to get our attention, but not enough to get us completely excited.

In many ways, the iPhone 3GS delivers on its promises. The battery, which could sometimes deplete in less than a day on the iPhone 3G, lasted longer in our preliminary tests, and the phone's software ran noticeably faster. Yet, we still have some concerns. A faster AT&T 3G network isn't going to happen overnight, and some features, like tethering and multimedia messaging, aren't scheduled until later in summer 2009. We also struggled to see any change in call quality, which, as any iPhone owner can tell you, remains far from perfect.

So should you buy it? That will depend on how much you'll have to pay for the privilege. If you don't own an iPhone yet, and you've been waiting for the right model, now is the time to go for it. The same goes for iPhone Classic owners who never made the jump to the iPhone 3G. But, if you're a current iPhone 3G owner, the answer isn't so clear. If you're eligible to upgrade at the cheapest prices ($700 for the 16GB model and $800 for the 32GB model), we suggest doing so, as long as you don't mind the required two-year contract. If you own an iPhone 3G, but are not yet eligible for the upgrade, we recommend upgrading to the new iPhone OS 3.0 operating system, and then waiting. As much as the iPhone 3GS brings, it's worth the extra $200 that the 16GB and 32GB models cost.

Wow what a great feeling it was when my simcard was recognised !

It's a great smartphone and recommended for anyone who is ending a contract with their phone company or just has the money for it. The touch screen is great, looks are sleek, and the performance most of all is where you can really see it. Whether it's opening browsers, checking email, loading games, it is a powerhouse of a phone and I'm glad to a proud owner of the iPhone 3GS. The only downside is if u are with AT&T they still haven't set up tethering and MMS but I can deal with sending via email so not a big problem at the moment.

So much faster than the 3G. The graphics are much better and has more control over what programs are running using the multitasking feature on iOS4. The 3G does not support the multitasking feature in the new iOS4.

  iPhone 3GS Black (16GB) (AT&T)
Review created: 07/03/10

I love everything about this phone! Great phone for anyone who is looking to buy a new smart phone! As an original owner of the first generation iPhone, and using that for over 2 plus years. The new 3GS iPhone that I just purchased does everything better. I have only had it for one day and already I can tell that I am going to love this phone! Great phone, great buy!
