Never Back Down (DVD, 2008)

I liked this film better when it was titled 'The Karate Kid'. Sure, there is nothing new under the sun and every film borrows something from other films that have come before it, but this film borders on copyright infringement.

If I had to write a Karate Kid summary in 3 sentences, this is what I would write:

Kid moves to a new town. Kid gets the living crap beaten out of him by the town bad boy. Kid starts some heavy duty Karate training so he can get revenge by kicking the bad boys ass while simultaneously winning the heart of the hottest girl in town.

Now, if I had to write a summary for Never Back Down in 3 sentences it would be as follows:

Kid moves to a new town. Kid gets the living crap beaten out of him by the town bad boy. Kid starts some heavy duty Mixed Martial Arts training so he can get revenge by kicking the bad boys ass while simultaneously winning the heart of the hottest girl in town.

The plot is literally exactly the same. The only difference is that when it came to the soundtrack they replaced Peter Cetera with nu metal in the vein of Linkin Park.....and the most pivotal characters in this film were cell phones.

People have commented that the fight scenes were pretty good. I tend to disagree. They were....down right boring. Instead of watching this film just watch the Karate Kid and have a computer handy. When the fight scenes are on in the Karate Kid, just turn away and watch some UFC fights on Youtube. You'll have practically the same film as Never Back Down....just much, much better.

I do respect the fact that they were able to jam every 80's film cliché into just over 90 minutes. It is impossible to spoil the content of this film as everybody has already seen it (at least 1000 times) with a different title.

Will the good kid defeat the bad kid in a no holes barred fight? Who knows? Well, actually, everybody knows.

A excellent movie that has a great lesson on being in control of yourself. I would recommend this movie,full of action and a great story plot of what can happen when you do the right thing even when the wrong is so much easier to deal with your problems. a great movie about jake tyler a kid from iowa,who moves to orlando.jake has alot of anger since his dad died drunk driving.getting into alot of fights.one makes the internet. when he goes to school in orlando,he tries to save a kid named max who's in a fight.the fight is organized by the kids.he gets invited to a party by a girl named baha.jakes got a woody.but baha is the girlfriend of ryan,the schools fight champ.jake gets his ass kicked real bad.he starts to train with jean roqua,for the ultimate confrontation with ryan.a must see for mixed martial arts.and amber heard{totally hot].five star in my book.leejohn914

This movie is an updated Karate Kid, same plot different actor.I have watched this movie several times and enjoyed it each time. Some plots are a little corny but it is a very clean movie and fun to watch.

this is one of my favorite movies. which says a lot, cuz there are many good movies out there. this movie shows how MMA is really done and its not in a phony/cheesy way like other MMA movies. it captures every emotional and physical part of MMA. it also explains it well for people who dont know anything about MMA

Seen the movie at a friends house. Had to get a copy great story line, though there is a lot of violence. Not for kids. Good movie though

Set against the action-packed world of Mixed Martial Arts, Never Back Down is the story of Jake Tyler, a tough kid with alot of heart but also alot of anger. Jake is the new kid in town with a troubled past. He has recently moved from Iowa to Florida with his family who has relocated to support his younger brother’s shot at a professional tennis career. Jake was a star athlete on the football team back home, but in this new city he is an outsider with a reputation for being a quick tempered brawler. Making an attempt to fit in at the invitation of a flirtatious classmate, Baja Miller. Jake goes to a party where he is unwittingly pulled into a fight with a bully named Ryan McCarthy. While he is defeated and humiliated in the fight, a classmate introduces himself to Jake and tells him about the sport of MMA. He sees a star in Jake and asks that he meet with his mentor, Jean Roqua. Roqua will take Jake under his wing but it's up to Jake to find the patience, discipline, and reason to succeed. For Jake more is at stake than mere victory. His decision will not just settle a score but defines who he is.

I could write this movie just by looking at the cover. It's the same old silly story. Nothing new, nothing cool, nothing interesting aside from a pricey soundtrack and lure for UFC fans. If you're looking for a teen movie without sex (American Pie) or cars (The Fast and the Furious) then this should fulfill your fighters crave. If you're interested in a decent flick, Never Back Down is below par.

This movie is full of mma action. It brings together two great things, women and fighting. No dull moments, just non stop mma action. If your an mma fan, I recommend that you get this movie.

I bought the extended beat down edition. It has alot more in it than the theatrical version. I really like this movie. After watching it, this movie quickly became one of my favorite movies. Of course, I practice MMA, along with watching it. So, I'm kinda partial on my opinion. Alot of people compare this to the Karate Kid. Of course, that's like saying Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee movies are the same. There's a difference. Anyways, I love this movie, and if go into it, with an open mind, you'll realize it is a good movie as well.
