Like most "kids of the 80's", I watched the animated series "Transformers" every day, and yeah...I really liked it (even though it was a 'boys show'), but I also loved Thundercats and G.I.Joe as well. Cartoons of the 80's were good stuff...interesting characters, great writing and engaging enough to keep us kids fans of the shows for over 20 years.

When I first heard that a Transformers live action movie was being made, I was a bit excited. Then I started seeing the trailers and first commercials for the film and I got a bad feeling. I am usually pretty good at 'feeling out' good and bad movies.

The Transformers movie came out and I didn't go to see it. Then it came on video and I didn't rent it. It was available on my computer and I didn't watch it. I STILL would not have seen it, except someone bought me the DVD for Christmas...knowing how much I loved 80's cartoons and thinking I'd like this movie. Well...their heart was in the right place, anyway.

Simply said, THIS LIVE-ACTION, 2007 TRANSFORMERS MOVIE HAS IN MUCH IN COMMON WITH THE "80'S TRANSFORMERS SERIES" AS THE MOVIE "GREASE" HAS IN COMMON WITH A COOKING SHOW.

Basically, this movie is ok for kids age 13-18. I have heard some glowing reviews from kids who were too young to have ever seen the original 1980's series. I have also heard some "okay" reviews also from the late 40-something parents of these teenagers, who mostly were impressed by the computer-generated visuals the film relies so heavily on.

Yes...we live in an age where computers can create amazing visual effects in movies. Yup, they sure can. The integration between real live actors and computer created characters and effects is really something...but at what cost? The cost is the plot...the story-telling...and yes, the acting too. A very weak story at the cost of amazing visual effects. If you don't mind that, then sure...this is a great movie. As for me...I guess I am an old-fashioned 30-year old, and I actually do care about things like a good plot and great writing.

I am sorry, but I cannot recommend this movie. To fans of the original series, I would have to think you would be quite disappointed. To those who were too young to have watched the original, I don't think this movie is really very good to waste your time and money on. Do yourself a favor go buy the original 1980's animated tv series if you want to watch some Transformers.

  Transformers' owns the special effects.

No one can deny that the special effects in this movie are awe inspiring however the storyline really could have used some work. Too much comic relief was used when just heart racing suspense would have been much more effective. There also was a highly inappropriate (although hilarious) scene where some very adult things are discussed. For this scene alone i would deffinitely shy parents away from letting their kids watching it without a remote control on hand.

In Summary: Graphics-5, Story-3, Acting-4, Overall-4

  Robot on Robot Carnage
Review created: 11/02/07
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Pretty much almost every male kid who grew up during the 80's were glued to their TV sets on weekday afternoons watching just one thing. They were watching one of the best cartoon shows on TV which also happened to be Hasbro Toys' most popular line of toys at that time. I am talking about Transformers. I know I was pretty much hooked on the show with its tale of good versus evil as the noble leader (who also happened to be a Mack truck) Optimus Prime led his Autobots against the evil robot that was Megatron and his Decepticons. It had lots of fighting, explosions and most of all, it had toys of every Transformer in the show for kids to re-enact such battles.

In 1986 the first Transformers movie (animated) came out and pretty much scarred every kid who was ever a fan of the show for life as their beloved characters actually died on-screen to make way for a new generation of Transformers. Let's just say that as much as I enjoyed the original movie I also hated it. It is now 2007 and Michael Bay, Steven Spielberg and ILM have concocted a live-action version of Transformers. To say that this movie has erased some of the bad taste left by the first animated film is quite an understatement. What we have in this live-action Transformers is nothing less than pure robot-versus-robot carnage and mayhem done so well that it more than makes up for the weak story and the uneven performances from the cast.

Michael Bay's hand truly shows as his handle on the sturm und drang he's well-known for matches well with the premise of giant alien robots fighting each other with no thought for collateral damage to populace and property. Unlike, his previous films he actually holds himself back from using his usual tricks of using low-angled slo-mo scenes too much and the ultra quick editing style which makes his movies sometimes difficult to keep up with. Again, it might be Spielberg's influence in addition to Bay actually growing as a filmmaker to thank for this. The action scenes wouldn't be as great as it was if it wasn't for the work of ILM and its team of computer animators. The Autobots and Decepticons look so real that they join Gollum and Davey Jones as fully-realized CGI-characters who blend into the scene as if they're made of real flesh and blood. In the case of the Transformers made of steel, oil and rubber. Their battles from the Hoover Dam all the way to the nearby Mission City didn't look artificial. There's a sense of weight and depth to the battle. It atually looked like the city with it's small humans was actually being ripped apart by these giant robots. Industrial, Light and Magic truly deserve every award they'll get come awards time. In the past it was said that a live-action Transformers would come off as cheesy and fake, but technology and the expert use of it by ILM's team of artisans has made it a reality.

Transformers really brings the word blockbuster and brings it like storm and thunder. There's no other way to say it than this was a movie which was a kickass rollercoaster ride with just enough human interaction to keep it from becoming cartoonish. It's not a perfect film as the weak script and uneven performances by most of the cast would show, but it's all balanced out by the work put in by Shia LaBeouf and the action scenes with the Transformers that this movie marks the highlight of the 2007 summer blockbuster season. Michael Bay has finally found the one film he looks to be tailor-made to do.

This is easily the best movie of 2007 and having Michael Bay directing was a perfect choice for something that needed to be fast paced, edge of your seat action story telling.
Some of the best CG you have ever seen period......... Executive Producer, Steven Speilberg. Need I say more?
Good acting with a huge list of new and seasoned actors.
Something for everyone in this film.
I hear Michael Bay actually recieved death threats for making alot of changes from the original genre. I can tell you from being a kid in the 80's with generation 1 Transformers that these changes were necessary to achieve more of a realism aspect and I was mostly satisfied with them.
Wether you are familiar with the world of Transformers or not, this is a must see........

  Rating The DVD
Review created: 01/07/08
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Rating the DVD.... Not The Film itself.

The DVD did not come with any bonus features.

The lack of those bonus features did not help the fact
that the Film just did not come across as well on the
small screen as it would have on the Big Screen at the
theater.

That said, the film was OK in that it had a story, plenty
of action due to Michael Bay directing it, plus a lot of
special effects that did not hamper the movie's flow.

Sometimes CGI doesn't add to a movie, but detracts from it,
i.e. the Hulk's first film. In this case the CGI flowed with
the characters and and kept the story going.

There is a sequel to this film in the works. Would suggest
that you take in the sequel at the theater as films of this
nature need to be seen on the Big Screen!

A great live action take on the classic toys
Review created: 11/16/07

It is rare that a live action movie actually captures the feel of a cartoon. Michael Bay's Transformers does just this and more.

The movie has an updated feel as the action starts off in Quatar. However, the old school fan is pulled right in with the first Decepticon's transformation. Ahh, that old sound from the cartoon. :)

A number of other toss backs to the origional cartoon appear through-out the entire movie. Like Prime's line "At the end of this day, one shall stand, one shall fall". Ah, memories.

The best part of the movie is how ALL the Transformers feel so to scale. The animations are so flawless that you cannot even tell that they are CGI'ed. When they wander through a town or during a battle they look true to size.

My only complaint was poor Bumblebee being turned into a Camero instead of a VW bug. Yet, they toss in a 70's style bug when we are introduced to Bumblebee so Bay once again pays homage to the origional.

The movie storyline is great, the DVD is also great. This is a neat one to own.

5/5

I thought the movie as rated PG-13 was great! The graphics were wonderful. It was a little long (but good for car rides). My only issue is if you have children (age under 11) there are some conversations that are not appropriate. I would watch it first before you let the kids watch and I know they want to b/c it is about toys after all.

When this movie came out in the theater's I didn't bother to go see it because I thought I would be disappointed as I figured there would be no good storyline, but boy was I wrong. I bought this DVD the day it came out and have watched it 3 times. Not only is there a great storyline but the effects are mind blowing and the movie doesn't disappoint on any level. I watched this movie with my 4 year old niece and she also LOVED it, to keep a 4 years glued to thier seat for over 2 hours is a hard thing to do. I was never into Transformers as a kid and didn't know much about them, but this movie grabs you and doesn't let go until the credits roll. Definitely get the 2 disc version with all the bonus features, they are all very interesting and get into the making of this amazing movie. If you can get the Target exclusive transforming DVD case version, it is definitely worth the money. Highly recommend this movie to anyone who wants to escape for a couple of hours.

  Mind Numbing Propaganda

I know everyone will disagree with me on this one - but this movie was damn near unbearable. It felt like a two plus hour commercial for the Army - aimed at your 8 year old to make him think blowing stuff up is cool. After about a dozen slow mo scenes of soldiers running in front of explosion while sappy music blares I started feeling like I was being brainwashed. The plot is a joke that was probably lifted right out of one of the old cartoons and most of the acting is annoying at best.
Over-rated mind numbing fluff.
Should of got a razzie.

  Transformers 2007
Review created: 09/02/08

If you grew up like I did in the Late Seventies and early eighties you were a transformers fan, watching every Saturday morning before there was a cartoon channel. Then of course you graduated to Magnum PI and that other detective show with the helicopter after school...but I digress.

Micheal Bay does an awesome job of converting the Saturday morning kids cartoon to an action packed, Sci-Fi story with plenty of action accompanied by just enough humor and T and A, (Megan Fox......Wow) to keep the story real. Suspending relatively few laws of physics along the way the movie progresses logically and believably, well if you can suspend reality long enough to believe in Hyper Advanced Alien robots. The "age old" war between the Autobots (good guys) and the Decepticons (Bad Guys) and the reason for their presence on earth is sufficiently explained to keep the story moving along nicely.

Some minor technical inaccuracies re: the military but most people wouldn't even notice. (Any Army guy can tell you how to wear a beret correctly with the uniform...why can't Micheal Bay figure it out.)

Overall a good semi-violent story of teen angst and getting the girl rolled into a nail-biting war of the bots romp. A great job by Micheal bay though definitely a PG-13 and at times R for violence movie. A+

  Spielberg hits paydirt with Transformers

Filmakers Steven Spielberg and Michael Bay have struck gold with the Transformers Movie. Although the story line was a little weak, but the movie makes up for it with all of the action throughout the movie. I would not recommended it for children under the age of 10. Has lots of violence. Other than that, way cool believable special effects.

The Transformers is a epic tale about alien robots that came to earth and lived among humans. Their planet was destroyed. But there were two races of Transformers. The Autobots were good peaceful and the Decepticons were evil and wanted to kill humans. The Autobots fought the Decepticons to protect the humans and Earth.

I think this move was a excellent special effects display. It had great scenes and moments, but the original animated version had more depth. This move is worth having in your collection.

This movie is great for anyone who likes car chases, explosions, robots, and humor all in one. My son loved the original transformers when he was a child so we thought we'd check this movie out and he still loved them. This movie finds a way to get the 'tween generation into Transformers. I don't think it's appropriate for much younger children though. It could be a bit too violent for small ones. So as far as my family goes, Transformers is still a hit.

CG effects were pretty awesome, and the plot I didnt expect nor receive very much,it was a kids cartoon people!I thought there was no way to make John Turturro into a truly retarded actor but this movie somehow did it.Michael Bay is terrible and should stop ruining things like the transformers and Pearl Harbor. The girl was really hot though and Bumblebees change was pretty cool, wished he would have kept using his radio, much cooler than the gay voice he was given . Prime was cool and the action good, get rid of Bay and Taye Diggs and the movie would be downright awesome, maybe if Spielberg had directed it would have been done true justice.I will buy it as a loyal transformers fan and for the special effects.
