Wii World Series of Poker: Tournamed of Champions 2007

Tournament of Champions isn't a good poker-teaching tool in the way that, for instance, Stacked was. The game's load screens do occasionally toss you some decent nuggets of info that might be useful to new players, but in-game, the tips that scroll across the screen are beyond obtuse. "Poker is a game of position," says Chris Ferguson. Gee, thanks, Jesus! However, one thing the game does offer that might be useful for non-video-game poker play is a tool that unlocks once you've played a decent number of hands. By pressing a button, you can bring up a menu that shows you a wealth of statistical data, such as what your pot odds are, based on the number of people already in the hand; the odds of making a specific type of hand, based on what you have versus what's on the board; which cards are your outs; and the percentage of hands you have played in and raised prior to the flop. For those who find the more mathematical aspects of poker dizzying, this handy little tool gives you a better idea of where you stand. It won't win hands for you, but it might keep you from losing a few.

In case you're waiting for us to get to the part where World Series of Poker takes advantage of the Wii's unique motion controls, you can keep waiting. This game makes no attempt whatsoever to include motion controls of any kind. It just maps all the basic functions to the buttons on the Wii Remote and Nunchuk, and that's it. Granted, motion controls in a poker game probably wouldn't make a ton of sense. If you can actually think of a good way to include motion controls in a middling poker game, feel free to share them with us, because we couldn't think of any. Maybe pushing the remote forward to go all in, or something? OK, maybe not.

Unfortunately, on top of not including any motion-control features, the Wii version also lacks any form of multiplayer. The online mode found in every other version of Tournament of Champions is gone, so this version is strictly a single-player affair. Half the fun of the game is in playing people online, so without it, the game feels rather hollow. Not to mention that Activision is charging $10 more for this version than the other versions currently available. If that sounds like a bad deal, you're wrong--it's an awful deal.

Another huge drag is the game's presentation. It's tough to make an exciting-looking game of poker, considering that players at a poker table don't do much beyond shifting around in their chairs and occasionally screaming wildly when they lose or win a big hand. The basic in-game graphics aren't terrible, though they're fairly bland, and the game lacks the dynamic presentation of one of the TV poker broadcasts. You'll also notice some ugly clipping issues with character models from time to time. Overall, the Wii version looks like a slightly improved update of the PlayStation 2 version, which is to say that it doesn't look like the developer did much to take advantage of the Wii's hardware capabilities.

LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT!!! i watched the championships on TV and i find it truly exciting. but i would never plunk my money down on a real game with other people. With this game, i can gain experience, a lot of it. i find i can't put this game down. i'm not a gambler, per se. and i have not gone to a casino in 5 years. but this game is just like the real thing that you see on TV. LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT!!!!

I love this game! Closest thing to being at the casino!

I play poker online and in casinos. The online thing is okay, but nothing beats being at the casino, the sounds, the chatter, the chips....

This game captures some of that ... or, as much as you can in a virtual world. Plus you get the World Series of Poker TV feel with commentary (which is repititive and can be annoying if you are prone to that). I love it! The computer characters are fun and the chatter is amusing. I can do without all the sneezes and yawns, but not a big deal for me.

The AI card play is okay. Sometimes, it can be realistic, but there are quite a few times when it is entirely unrealistic. So, this is not a good training tool. But when I can't get to the casino, it is the next best thing.

Pretty boring since it is a one player game. Its neat at first, the AI is great. It just gets tiresome.

  Good entertainment for one

Well, we love playing poker.. and it was disappointing that only one person can play this game. Yes, I guess it would be hard to display your cards on the same tv screen that eveyone is looking at, but they should find a diff way to do that... like little boxes on the wii remotes or something. That would be much more fun to play with other people instead of just watching eveyone else that is a 'fake' player. Good entertainment though for a little while...

Hey, this is not a bad way to go if you've got light pockets and just feel like playing poker. There are a few things I wish I could change in the game like the constant YAWNING of the players(including the rookie). It would be nice if you could choose which gender you are(women DO play cards).Even better if you could play at the same table with a friend. That's one thing that should be simple enough to incorporate into a video game but not this one.
Other than that, lots of kill time on a rainy day at home.

We thought this was pretty realistic. We're learning about poker and we would recommend this as a way to do that. The effects are fantastic, includes background noise, stalling by the betters, and great commentary.

Well, as the title says clear as a mexican stand off. It's a one player game that is a realistic view of how real poker is played. Slow and steady.... It's a realistic game which is probably it's appeal and detriment. Poker is very personal and this one player game is no exception. The graphics are what you would expect and if it is your dream to play on the professional circuit one day this would certainly be a good game to play. However, if your looking for an upbeat dance crazy, active Wii rock'em sock'em go get em' game look elsewhere. For the hardcore fan, they would most likely play the real game on Full Tilt or Poker Stars but for the average gamer looking to hone his game this would be a decent start.

  World Series of Poker--Wii
Review created: 05/29/09

This is the second poker game for Wii that I have tried. This is by far the most realistic and interesting game. Playing this game feels more like watching the World Series of Poker on TV or actually playing poker. I could do without the sneezing one character does but other than that it is pretty cool.

Not bad, a little slow, would like to be able to fast forward if I'm not playing, but it's an easy game and better than another Poker game I got that really sucked. At least this one is closer to what I have on my PC.

My husband loves Texas Holdem and I thought this would be a great Christmas gift and it was. He enjoyed playing in the "tournament" and has enjoyed it ever since. Just be aware that it is a one player game, which I didn't know.

The one thing I dislike about the game is the small print where it shows the players that are betting and winning, it is really hard to see even on a big screen TV. I like the feature where you can ask for a tip if uncertain on whether you want to play your cards or not.

My family has enjoyed playing The tournament of Champions poker game. We would definately recommend this game over the Wii World Champions poker ALL IN game.

When you begin you can customise your poker player based on different options(sort of like creating your Mii) or you can choose one of the pre-loaded professional poker player. We are pretty new to playing the game and find some of the tips helpful and some you take with a grain of salt. Of course, you must remember, poker is a game of chance.

During the different tournaments that you have the option of choosing a variey of poker games, not just Texas Hold'em. A professional poker player, Chris Ferguson, will give you advice if you want on each hand. It is only a option, you don't have to follow it. The main objective for playing these tournaments is to build your way up to qualify for the winner take all -INVITATION ONLY champions poker event and bring home the bracelet and TROPHY!!

The game also has an option called QUICK PLAY. In this game, you DO NOT have to set up a character, you go directly to playing hands. Fast and quick and not all poker games have this option!!!!!!!!!!!!

The biggest downfall is that only one player can play with no multi-player option or online capability. Another downfall is the graphics. There is a lot of repetitive motions such as yawning, stretching, and sleeping during the tournament play. It's not easy to make a long journey of poker tournaments exciting every minute.

Conclusion, if you like Texas Hold'em & video poker playing and want to get some ideas of tournament play, then you will enjoy this game.

I love the game. Texas Hold em is one of my favorite things to do and this game is so much fun. You can design your own person and play for points and in money tournaments. It really is a lot of fun. I'm glad I purchased.
