At times a phone gets released which is different and original. The LG Chocolate KG800 is such a phone!

When closed this phone just looks mysterious. It is dark with a dark LCD screen and just an LG Logo and a silver OK button to give any clue about what to do with it. The hidden keypad is touch sensitive and glows red when in use. When opened, the full keypad is available. There are also buttons around the edge for volume control and multimedia - MP3, camera and video. The design works well and looks fantastic, although the touch-sensitive keys are quite sensitive and take a little getting used to.

This phone comes with MP3, camera (With flash!) and video. The Chocolate has an MP3 player that can handle a wide range of formats. Music can be controlled from the touch pad or with the inline remote control supplied with the handset. A headset is included and this plugs into the charging port. MP3 ring tones are supported, and there's 128 Mbytes of memory which is pretty good, although a memory card option would have been nice to have.

The Chocolate is quite slim and compact and weighs just 83g. It fits easily into your jeans pocket. The keypad is sensitive to touch and heat, so it won't be activated when in a bag. Battery life is below average and the phone will need charging every few days.

The KG800 is the first in a new line of phones from LG. These were first released in Korea and have taken 7% of the market. Similar take-off to be expected elsewhere.

  LG Chocolate KG800 great phone

I love this phone, it's very sleek, I think it will be one of the more popular phones for the next several months from its many functions and great styling.

Strengths: Easy to use, great sound and visual quality
Weaknesses: Not compatible with ipod formats. No speaker phone. Buttons not intuitive.
Summary: I needed a new cell phone and was very excited about the LG Chocolate. However, after reading numerous reviews and peeking in on some chat rooms, I was a bit apprehensive. Nothing to worry about!

First of all, the phone is gorgeous looking and has a good heft, much more than you would expect. The touch pads on the main body are easy to learn, but are different than your standard cell phone buttons because there is no tactile "give." The buttons aren't necessarily intuitive, so I had to delve into the instruction manual to figure out what each button did.

Downloading music was a snap from VCast. Loading up your own tunes requires a bit more work. You either need to buy 2.5mm ear buds (standard is 3.5mm) or you have to buy the Verizon adapter ($14.99). In addition, you'll need the Music Essentials kit ($29.99), which is great if you have an IBM clone, but requires quite a bit of work if you use a Mac. If you use an ipod on your IBM clone, you actually have to reburn your songs into either WMA or mPEG format and then upload them into your phone. Memory is a little limited on the phone (68MB) but you can buy a microSD card and load songs onto the VX8500 that way. And contrary to an earlier review, the max size for a microSD is only 1GB at this time -- so don't buy anything bigger because it won't work with this phone.

No speaker phone, but not a big deal for me. Bluetooth synced very readily.

Overall, cool phone, no regrets. Not a lot of accessories available currently (cases, etc) but more are in the works. Oh, and it smudges a lot.

  Good Phone, But be Wary.

This is a good phone; it has a sleek interface, appealing graphics, and it makes a noise like a door creaking when you slide it open. As with any new phone, it takes some time to become acquainted with its peculiarities. The time that I used the phone it was pretty good, except one thing. It is a triband phone, 900/1800/1900 frequencies, and I have Cingular as a carrier. Cingular operates mostly on the 850 frequency where I live and some on 1900 frequency. Now the phone works great if you belong to the T-mobile family, not so great with the cingular family. The only other drawback to the phone was the touchpad. At times it was possessed other times it was very cool. If you decide to buy this phone, make sure that your GSM network does not operate on the 850 frequency. I hope this helps.

This phone looks real pretty but that is where it ends.

Have gone through two of these already - both with problems with the display. It is EXTREMELY sensitive to moisture and humidity - the inside of the display fills with condensation frequently when coming in from cold temps - a problem I have read others complain about. A humid summer day is all it takes to turn that stupid water spot behind the battery red - and therein voids your warranty - total BS if you ask me!

Currently my second phone eats the battery (also replaced once) in about 4 hours so something is definitely wrong on the inside....

the phone captures you at first because it is very different and cute. it has a lot of features its even touch activated with glowing red keys. it even recorded videos for over 10mins worth! but honestly the best part was the looks... it was slow and barely could hold a charge the Mp3 didnt work everytime i tried. cant download any real or HiFi ringtones to it. Wont show you the pic after you take it you have to go and find the pic. also the camera wasnt that great either kinda blurry. overall good but not best considering all the great phones out there.

DO NOT BUY THIS PHONE IF YOU USE ANY CARRIER OTHER THAN VERIZON. I MADE THAT MISTAKE AND IT CONSTANTLY DROPPED CALLS, LOST SIGNAL, WOULDN'T TRANSFER MY NUMBERS AND THE MP3 FUNTION DIDN'T EVEN WORK. THIS PHONE HAS BEEN A THORN IN MY SIDE.

IF YOU USE VERIZON PERHAPS YOU'LL HAVE BETTER LUCK, BUT AT&T CUSTOMERS, BEWARE!!!

I bought this phone for my daughter, because of the pink color. I was really surprised at the quality of the phone and how it felt in your hand(It was much better than I expected). I have a motorola rizor which is also a sliding phone, so I will compare the two products.

First, service quality between the two the motorola wins hands down. The chocolate is a tri band phone and does not have the 850 mhz bandwidth. It caused a problem in Michigan because AT&T uses that bandwidth and they do use it across the country. Both phones worked but the service level on the chocolate was much lower. The motorola also connected without any extra steps to the internet. Both phones were purchased overseas and the rizor was not released from any of the major US carriers. The version that I bought was a UK model.

The software in the LG seemed to be more user friendly and navigating around the phone was much better than the rizor. The chocolates interface was easier even though I have had motorola products for years.

Quality of the chocolate seems to be as good or better than any phone that the I have used or had the opportunity to use. I am really impressed with the way LG's new phones look and feel. If they had a quad band phone it would be the only phones that I would buy. I bought a shine, prada and this chocolate phone. All three feel and look so much better than products that are available here. I can't figure out why LG didn't make these quad band. It's the only thing that is bad about the phone.

If you live in an area that doesn't have 850mhz(europe and asian use 900) This phone will be great, unless you travel the US.

everything about this phone is excellent. the keypad is a bit small would be the only negative. the touch controls are the best of any phone out there in the market today. the camera is a bit difficult to operate and have not downloaded any music yet. SMS, music tones etc., work very well. Far better than the razor or comparable nokia.

  beautiful phone

I have had this phone for six monthes now and have had the time to learn all of it's quarkes. First off let me start by saying I love this phones sleek styling and all of it's great features. I love Haveing music at my fingertips wherever I go and I love the Micro SD expansion port to hold more songs. I also love the ability to adjust the key control sensitivity so people with colder fingers (like me) can still use the phone. However recently I've begune having a few problems. My phone sometimes will just randomly dial somone off of my saved Numbers list for no reason. I have woken up at 3am several times to one of my friends cursing me out over the phone laying on my side table. Verison told me the phone just needed a software update and it spent an hour being downloaded and then it happened again two nights ago... also the screen scratches very easily and you have to constantly clean the phone as every finger print stands out and looks awful on such a beautiful phone... over all I like the phone and will probably replace it with anouther of the same phone and hope for the best...

  LG Chocolate KG800
Review created: 10/05/07

1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Before we ponder LG's "Chocolate" moniker, it's the novel design of the KG800 that sets the it apart from anything we've seen before. It has an innovative touch-sensitive navigation keypad, which is inactive when the phone is closed and locked, but glows vibrantly red when you slide the screen up. Alternatively you can access these keys by unlocking the phone with two presses of the volume key when slid shut.

There are nine touch-sensitive buttons in total: two customisable shortcut keys below the screen, call and cancel keys, four-way navigation and a selection button. It's a shame the screen isn't touch-sensitive as well, but we still applaud LG for their fresh approach with the Chocolate's design.

So why Chocolate? We simply have no idea, really. LG tells us "Chocolate" is their pet name for the phone and that they thought it was about time a mobile phone came out with a name that's easy for people to remember. Before seeing the phone we thought it might be due to its colour, but there's no hint of brown on this phone. The high-gloss, black case with silver detail, while smooth, is prone to smudges and fingerprints. LG provides a small polishing wad in the case that you can attach to the upper right corner of the phone but we found it easier just to give the case a quick rub on our jeans or shirt every once in a while for a buff.

Most people we gave the Chocolate to seemed very impressed with its design and surprised to see the the quirky operation of the keypad. Others commented that it looked quite plasticky compared to what they thought it would look like. Each to their own when it comes to fashion phones, we guess.

Other characteristics of the phone include a black-and-grey checkered keypad, MP3 player and camera shortcuts on the side, and a USB port that doubles as the headset and power connection -- you can't listen to music while charging the phone. It's a rather petitie phone, too, measuring 95 x 48 x 15mm and weighing 83 grams.

The phone is really nice. The way it was shape and how it looks. Good thing about this phone is, when you download the mp3 from computer to put on your mobile you can set it as ring tone. The phone is really sensitive but is pretty nice. Now bad things about the phone is that, if you have t-mobile you can't use t-zones. The phone doesn't have speaker. Out of all I'll give the phone 6.5 out of 10. Its not bad or its not that good. The phone is nice and international.

LG Chocolate KG800 - The Bottom Line
Review created: 12/31/06
by:
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The good: The LG KG800 Chocolate has decent call quality and offers Bluetooth, world phone support, and a gorgeous display.

The bad: The LG KG800 Chocolate has tricky controls, and it lacks a speakerphone, an external memory card slot, and voice dialing.

The bottom line: The LG KG800 Chocolate is indeed pretty, but its feature set and performance don't back up its trendy design.
