Resistance: Fall of Man (Playstation 3, 2006)

This game looks awesome. I think Gears of war for the 360 has a slight edge on the "Pretty Scale". However, this game kicks its butt on ambiance.
There is so much going on. On the 360 I thought the Backgrounds were better than Last Gen but now on the PS3 I am starting to see improvements beyond that. For instance in Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter you can see other parts of the city in the background. Well in Resistance, not only can I see parts of the City in the background, but I can see things happening over there as well. There are explosions, and smoke, and Flames, and Birds, and Planes... This to me is the Way cool Factor.
Then in another level, I think it was the 2nd one. There is a bunch of brush and trees. The brush, grass, and trees all sway in the wind independently, Heck I bet the Even tasked a Processor just to handle things in the wind. You stare out in front of yourself and it is just awesome watching the Background just coming alive.

The Enemy AI is Very Good. You have to use Cover, OR Flank from somewhere else other than where your company is attacking from, OR go into Zoom mode dodging bullets taking head shots. The big difference for myself would be the OR in that statement, you see in Gears of War you have to use Cover. The Game is all about Cover. OK if i am this Big Bad Dude... Then why do I have to Cower like a little girl behind cover. This is the Reason why I got to my Resistance Review before my Gears of War Review. I finished Resistance... and I am going back for a second round, before I will get back to finishing Gears for the 1st Time. Not to say that I think Gears is bad.

40 Players online. Holy $&#*. Gears only has 8 Players. Why am I paying $50 a year for XBox Live??? I thought Xbox Live was supposed to be so much better... and the best we can do is 8...
The Different modes are all pretty good.

The Weapons are a nice variety and all very cool.
Boss battles are exhilarating.
Sometimes I just like to stand around and shoot the glass or stare at the water, because it is done very well. The Glass breaks in a different way for a Rifle Butt than a shot from a gun. Every time you hit the glass it breaks away in a realistic fashion. Very Cool.

The Sound I thought was done pretty well. Even on my TV Speakers the Voices would seem to surround me. I never got Lost because I could just turn in the Direction of where the War is going on.

Vehicles are very Nice. Heck, after getting my butt kicked by the AI for a couple of hours, a vehicle that allows me to rule the roost for a couple of minutes is a nice way to go... Blow up window... Blow Up Bus... Blow up Car... Fun stuff

Oh Yeah, one more cool thing... If you kill the Chimera there Cooling Life support Tubes will pop out if you hit them from the side or the back, then they will flop around blowing out coolant for a few seconds until it runs out, Very nice touch.

I played the game and I was really impressed with it. It is the best ps3 fps game out so far.

This is the best ps3 fps game out so far. It is definetely worth the dollars. I would go out and buy it if I own a ps3 game console system now. You would not regret it.

"It's like playing every FPS ever."
Okay. If you're like me, and ignore all the hype surrounding this game, you were still probably expecting at least a solid game, it being the crown jewel of the PS3's launch titles. However, I was letdown.

Gameplay:

Of course, the most important aspect. The gameplay washed over me like a lukewarm wave. I was hoping the lack of rumble wouldn't affect the game very much, but without there was just something missing. The weapons lacked sparkle without a buzz in your palms. To tell the truth, they lacked more than that. Sure, the weapons are unique, but you never feel like anyone is more useful than any other for any given situation. In fact the weapons are a little to unique, to the point where the effectiveness of them is hampered by the manner you have to use them.

The controls were pretty smooth, if not counter intuitive. I can understand WHY they wouldn't want to mimic the Halo control scheme, but I can't believe they didn't have the goombahs to suck up their pride and use a very effective control system. 'Oh look, the L2 and R2 buttons are more trigger like!...but hey, let's use the R2 for weapon selection!' My only real complaint is the zoom. It feels so clunky, all of a sudden your gun is in the middle of the screen and you've zoomed in. No transition, and no telling how your gun got there out of nowhere.

Overall the gameplay felt like a frenzied Call of Duty with Serious Sam overtones. The enemies aren't particularly smart, but there are just so damn many of them and they're so powerful that tactics become moot on their end.

Visuals and Sound:

Yes, I'm combining the two, because the two are so closely linked. I kept seeing grenades go off and shots hitting me and expecting a fitting audio accompaniment. That said, the audio was nice, just badly implemented. The graphics however, were very unimpressive, not just because you'd expect them to be more polished, but because the visual design is so damn generic. Oh look a war torn town. And an enemy stronghold, which should have obviously superior technology...with thin metal rails for pathways! Identical enemies that seem to be using the same animation at the same time!

Summary: I find the lack of originality perturbing, and the audio and visual half assed. Actually, I find the whole game half assed. It just doesn't have any appeal, no reason to keep this game in mind longer than the time it takes to trudge through the campaign. Remember Pariah, Project Snowblind, and every Unreal game since the first couple? No, and you'll soon forget Resistance.

Not worth playing, and certainly not worth getting a PS3 for.

Resistance - Fall of Man is a first person shooter that combines World War II era environments with Doom-like horrific enemies to fight. It also offers great online multiplayer gameplay.

The plot is that, around the time of World War II, enemies attacked the world, starting with Russia and moving westward through Europe and England. In the 50s, the US launched a counter-attack, landing in England. You're fighting, at least to start with, with WWII era weapons and outfits through the streets of England.

Let's start with the graphics. The game goes for a very Call of Duty style of look - not quite realistic, more "cartooney" or stylized. Textures are smoothed out, some objects are simplified. That's not to say this is a Disney kiddie look. The monsters are grimey and nasty looking, the war-torn streets are very gritty. If anything, because this is set in a WWII type atmosphere, much of the game is brown, grimy and shell-shocked.

The HUD is reasonably well done and not intrusive. A small series of bars on the left indicates your health. An equally small but useful display on the right tracks your ammo, magazines and grenades.

The sound leans towards epic thundering scores, a la Gladiator or Conan. Players who love heavy rock music might not enjoy this, but I actually love this kind of music. I own both of the soundtracks I mentioned :). So to me, this really draws you into the atmosphere. The yells, gun noises and so on seem relatively realistic to help you feel you're really in the middle of a fight. I also like that, during gameplay, it's usually done without music. If I'm trying to sneak somewhere and listen for enemy movement, I don't want that objective made difficult by a soundtrack.

Gameplay itself is typical FPS fare. You can crouch, jump over things, zoom in on your enemy, throw grenades, strafe, and so on. Your friends and enemies are rather good about taking cover and not just rushing an enemy head-on. There are a few situations which seem quite scripted - if your pals are meant to die, you could play perfectly and take out every enemy quickly and your friends will still be killed by mysterious off-screen snipers. Still, the game needs to keep you on course for the plot so this is to be expected.

Checkpointing is reasonably good, although sometimes it sends you further back then you might like to start again. Healing is done via canisters you find, but depending on your skill you might wish there were more canisters scattered around :). That's why they have 3 levels of difficulty here.

The interactivity with your environment is pretty impressive. Say your enemy is hiding behind a car. You can shoot out the car's windows and then shoot the enemy through the open space. Or you can shoot the car to damage it, and have it explode a la the infamous 'red exploding barrels' found in most shooting games. If you shoot at a window a few times, it will first crack, then pieces will fall out.

Not only is the game great in single player mode, but you can play co-op with a friend at your home, or online in larger groups with friends or strangers from around the world. This helps turn the game from a play-for-a-few-months-at-home style game to a play-eternally-with-friends-online game.

"Resistance: Fall of Man" is an awesome PS3 game! It is set in the 1950 era in England where aliens have invaded the world. U.S. and British forces fight to deter the growing alien army invasion. There are many different levels to master in this futuristic military game that are certainly challenging to even an expert PS3 player. It is rated "M" for mature 17 due to some language used as well as the many gory, bloody fight scenes. The graphics are top notch says my husband and grandson who play it constantly at home. I purchased this game for my husband who recently got a PS3 game system and I knew he liked army type games in the past. The military aspect along with the futuristic alien invasion makes this game exciting and unique for players. This is one of the two main games my husband plays on his PS3, so I think you would enjoy it too!

I bought a PS3 and needed some high action games to go with it. My brother has Resistance: Fall of Man, and I was amazed by it when I played it in co-op mode with him. I searched on Ebay for the game and found it shipped for nearly half the price as the stores.
Now my brother and I can play this great FPS game from our livingrooms with online capabilities.

I have a 15 year old son who loves to play this with his friends when they come over, his XBOX60 rarely sees the light of day anymore.

You have to download huge updates constantly. A glitch in the game caused me to restart the entire game when I was already near the end. They try to sell you two silly add-on maps for like $8. They should be free. All of that is ridiculous.

This game is good but gorey. Otherwise it's just a good game, it's in 1st person so it's like you're there. I really would consider deeply whether you'll let your kids play this one because of the gore and that it's just plain violent.

Excellent graphics and game playing is addictive. The game has a good storyline, although there are many games on the market with somewhat the same story.

this is why i got a PS3 in the fist place its one the best fps games out there. the 40 player online is the best; no other game tops that. its a amazing game thats goin to last long with the multiplayer.

I always like the war games like oo7 but this one is really cool my husband is an addict to this game he already finish the game in the easy and medium levels and the hard... well let's just say is working on it, good graphics effects, the weapons he love the sniper, the only thing that he does not like is that the enemy always know where he is.

This is the best game out there. All those who bought a 360 or a Wii are really missing out. Best online game out there with fully customizable characters and great maps. Amazing weapons in campaign mode with smart AI that finds you and tries to kill you instead of standing there with its back turned. Overall the best game on any system right now.

This is a game everyone with the ps3 should own. Its one of the best shooters ive played. Its has a really good storyline that will make u want to keep playing the whole time. Online is pretty sweet and needs to be checked out also.

I enjoyed the video game.Fun shooting action, sneaking around corners to hit the enemy, creative weapons, impressive online play and much more. I bought it once before and conquered it and sold it. But after tring other Playstation 3 games this came out to be one of the best. This is a fun, action-filled, exciting game. One of the best on the market.

I just bought Resistance Fall of Man on Ebay this week. It is a very fun overall game with jaw-dropping graphics. The online play is very smooth and finding and game you like to play online isn't too hard either. I played online today and there are still plenty of people online to play with. The campaign mode is very fun as you battle your way to defeat the chimera. You can also play multi-player offline so if your friends come over you can crush them in to oblivion. This might be a stretch to some people but I have played Gears of War on the Xbox 360 and I would probably say this game is a little bit better than that. I think it is a great buy and will satisfy anyone.

Hey I got it cause it was all ps3 had to offer at the time and since then I've sold this game and the ps3. To be serious it wasn't very good and to keep the system when xbox 360 already makes what ps3 has, doens't make sense. PS3 people just bought a system with guaranteed less games then 360 and are missing out by far. I feel bad for you people who bough the system for games rather then bluray or those of you who said well i had a ps2 so i should get a ps3, Sony is going to crap all over you and your going to stand there with a PS3 and no games, haha. If you don't agree you don't have a 360 or never played live you would disagree, I've had both and bottom line is PS3 sucks.

I recently purchased the PS3 and let me tell you, I have played 1 game and that game is Resistance: Fall of Man. This game is simply amazing. The game play is easy and quick to learn. The storyline is intriguing and compelling and hard to get away from. I have not played online as I am honing my skills to get thrashed by the masses. Graphics are amazing and look wonderfull the better the TV you have. Only knock is $60 bones for the game, but its worth every penny. One of the best games for any system out now.

Resistance is alsome. It has mainly pros about it and the graphics are outstanding on my LCD tv. The multiplayer online is TERRIFIC. I really like Resistance and I suggest it to anyone who has a Playstation 3 system. Thanky you.

Hey forget all you have heard about this game. It is not a Halo killer. I am somewhat of a Halo fan but the games are very similar. The game is fun and will provide hours of entertainment. As of 1/04/07 it is the best game out for the PS3 system. But remember this you must be a fan of first person shooters...which I am not. After about 4 days of playing the game you will find it quite repetitive and the weapons are not as great as they say They look tough but don't do much damage to those aliens. If you love first person shooters get this you can't go wrong!! The game is fun and after you tire of it you can come back and play it again. Plus the online part of it is fun. This game is far from being titled "a great game" but it is a good game with semi-solid graphics.
