Solid Multiplayer but a bit overhyped
Review created: 10/26/06
18 of 19 people found this review helpful.

The first thing to understand: the advertised 140+ superhero roster is overhyped. You only get to control around 30 heroes, half of which are second line heroes.

Gameplay is almost identical to X-Men Legends II: same button mashing frenzy with special moves and 4 player co-op adventures.

What's changed: 28 or so new heroes to choose from, although about half of them are second rate, you will find that you will use a handful the most. Graphics are a lot easier on the eyes than previous xbox titles, but it doesn't look like a next gen title. You can now create your own fantasy hero team with a customizable roster, team logo, and name which you can then take online to play with friends on Live or system link.

Bottom line is if you enjoyed X-Men Legends, look to this as the sequel and not a completely new Marvel title. Of the hyped 140 heroes in the game, there are only about 30 playables and some of the best are still left out (Hulk, numerous X-Men, THE JUGGERNAUT).

If you are a fan of superheroes and you want a button-mashing game that is fun and satisfying for you and 3 buddies that will last around 20 hours, this is it.

Super Heroes to the Rescue Again
Review created: 05/14/07
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Graphics [9/10]
----------------
To put it bluntly, the graphics are stunning. The characters, environments, the enemies, all well detailed. You'll find yourself gazing at the background from time to time be it you're in an industrial complex or a hellish dimension. Admittedly, there are points where if feels as if you've been in the same area before due to similarity in room design from stage to stage, but that's assuming you're not busy trying to survive from an onslaught of minions. One major flaw, however, are drops in the frame-rate, causing hiccups in action. However, you'll find them forgivable.

Controls [8/10]
----------------
Fairly intuitive here. Two buttons act as combat buttons (weak & strong), while you have your jump, block, and grab buttons. The triggers bring up mini-menus that allow you to use special abilities or issue commands to your A.I. partners. Everything is in order here.

Sound [7/10]
--------------
A bit disappointing in this department. Right off the bat, the voice acting is probably the biggest complaint here. Some of the characters just don't seem right (ex. Colossus and Thor really stand out, not in a good way) while others are fine and fitting. The background music is okay, nothing really wow-inspiring or amazing however they suffice.

Gameplay [8/10]
-----------------
The gameplay is really hit or miss with its audience. If you enjoy pure, hack n' slash action then MUA delivers it in spades. If you find that you get bored relatively easily with hack n' slash games, then this'll be a rental for you. Either way you look at it, the gameplay is solid and delivers the action you've been seeking with the RPG options (stat upgrade, equipment selection, etc). In the first stage, you'll already find yourself fighting off five villains from the Marvel Universe. From there, they just get bigger and nastier (c'mon, would you expect any less?). As soon as you start the game, you'll have roughly 20 some characters at your disposal with four unlockable characters; add to that each character has at least four different, unlockable costume options that alter their stats. An impressive list, though some fans may be disappointed with who made the roster (ex. So I get Luke Cage but no Hulk? Huh...). MUA also features nice multiplayer options, with you being able to grab a friend and do up to four-player co-op in the middle of any stage (stuck in a rut? Grab your friend and see if he can help you). Don't have friends you can call on? Get yourself on Live and team-up, or go for some head-to-head competition. However, online is rather lag-prone (as with other games, but if you thought single-stutter was bad, online gets nasty). But for the most part, there's solid multiplayer action to be found here. Only reason why gameplay hasn't gained a high score is being you'll find yourself getting the "seen this, done that" syndrome immediately, especially if you've played the X-Men Legend games. Take it for what you will.

  My all time favorite game.

this is for the Xbox360 version:

Being a big fan of Marvel comics, I was itching at the chance to play this game. I was so hungry to actually be Daredevil and Mr. Fantastic that when I finally purchased the game, I was glad that it lived up to my expectations.

The graphics within the game are very good and the selection of playable characters is amazing. The vast array of other Marvel character enemies is seriously the best I have ever seen in any video game, for any system. You lock horns with everyone from Loki to Lizard to Rhino to Dr. Doom to Shocker to Blackheart to The Skrulls to Galactus to Mephisto to Ultron; the list goes on for days, no joke.

Gameplay is tedious but very esy to pick up; gameplay is identical to X-Men: Rise of Apocalypse. The vast selection of super powers for each playable character is astounding and extensive.

Overall, the game is almost perfect. The reason it's "almost" is because the game does tend to get a TAD repetitive after awhile; you can only kill enemies so many ways. The game is without a doubt outstanding, easily one of the best games in the past couple years.

9.8/10

I'm a marvel fan to the core. I really enjoyed this game and if you liked X-men Legends, you will like this game too. The game play is very similar, but somethings are different like the large selection of characters from the Marvel Universe and the power upgrades. The graphics and movies are a lot better on the XBOX 360. In the game you are helping SHIELD defeat DOOM and his army of villians

Great Fun for Comic Fans of all ages
Review created: 11/25/08

This game is a bit of a button masher, but it works well because of the wealth of Comic book related content. If you have a Marvel fan in your family, there are plenty of classic outfits and signature moves to unlock. A wealth of fun characters and a fast moving plot match perfectly with the beautiful graphics and sound.

this is pretty much the same game as those x-men games from a few years ago. Four person teams hacking theyre way through mountains of bad guys. Its everything you could want in a superhero game. And since its old, you can get it dirt cheap. the best part is, anyone can pick it up. My wife hates hack and slash games, but since she can play as Iron man (she gets all hot and bothered over tony stark), she's all in. Same thing for my brother an his girl friend. She's not huge into games, but she'll play that with him for hours. Also a perfect party game.

Best Comic Book Game To Date
Review created: 07/16/07(updated 07/18/07)
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

If you don't own this game yet don't buy this version. Get the new Marvel Ultimate Alliance: GOLD EDITION. It includes 8 additional characters.

The Gold Edition will include 4 heroes The Hulk, Cyclops, Hawkeye, and Nightcrawler as well as 4 villans Doctor Doom, Magneto, Venom, and Sabretooth.
These characters are not playable on this edition.

There is currently no word on if these characters will be made available for the PS3, Wii or PC.

These additional characters make this game better on the Xbox 360 than any other system.

  Fun Marvel RPG!!!
Review created: 12/03/06
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Pros
+ Awesome HD graphics!!!
+ Tons of characters & powers to learn.
+ RPG from the Marvel universe.
+ Co-op play.

Cons
- A lot of Marvel characters either are not playable or M.I.A.
- Fighting can tend to be repetitive.
- Effects glitch towards higher levels. (Requires a system restart to fix. Happened several times.)

Comments
This is only the beginning of games involving the entire Marvel Universe. Real time strategy will keep even an RPG hater interested enough to play through. There are only about 5 real CGI cutscenes and they look amazing. One of the biggest disappointment may be no Hulk or Punisher as well as a lot of other characters who won't be included. But most people will have their hands full trying to decide who to pick for their team anyway so it may be for the better.

Verdict
Must play for any fan of Marvel comics if not a must have title.

  Excellent game

This is probably the best hero game that I've played. It's a mixture of RPG and Action. The amount of playable characters is fantastic. There are a lot of options as to how you set up your team and each character has it's own special powers that are good in certain parts of the game. The graphics are good. Not the best I've ever seen but good enough as to not take away from the experience. The sound is great. Very good voice-overs. The controls are easy yet they offer a good deal of things to do quickly. The story is pretty good. The gameplay is great. Just a really good game that you don't want to miss.

  Not That Good
Review created: 08/10/09

I've recently started renting several games and to compare this game to the average game. The graphics are mediocre. The camera angle is more like the side scrolling Nintendo era as opposed to the modern quality of video games. I quit playing before too long. Game play itself is o.k. I particularly liked playing as Iron Man.

If you dig Marvel comics, this is a great game. Big fun
Review created: 08/05/09

The game really has a great cast of characters, playable and not. If you are a fan of the Marvel Universe, this is a great game to have. There are lots of unlockable characterts and advise using the Microsoft points to open up the roster even more. It is a good price, get a couple of friends to play and you are set.

I love that that there's several heroes and villains to choose from.

I like that there's a lot of un-lockable items.

I dislike some of the actual powers of the heroes and villains in the game.

Overall it doesn't matter in my opinion. Great give for kids.

  Ultimate Alliance
Review created: 07/12/09

This is a great game, but the camera view could be a whole lot better if a little thought was put into it. All in all, the add-on that goes with the game was an awesome idea. They included 4 playable villians and 4 playable heroes in the add on. The only bad part was that you had to purchase them through X Box live to get them.
The ability to switch between characters was good, but some were not as great as the others were. I got this game mainly because I wanted to improve my gamerscore without going online. There are alot of secret achievements that are in this game that need to be unlocked. I hope none of them are for online playing!
I would give this game a 7 out of 10 due to the camera angle and the variety of characters to choose from. The main reason I got this game was because of the next release they have coming out soon!!
