This album proved that Van Halen could carry on

I bought this disc because I realized that I only owned a copy of this album on cassette. I used to play sports like basketball and football when I was in Junior high and listening to some of the songs from this album was inspiring. Most people were very apprehensive about the future of Van Halen after David Lee Roth left to pursue a solo career, but this album proved that the band could carry on, shift direction and still rock. The singles from this album are actually my least favorite tracks (maybe because they were so overplayed on the radio) but tunes like "Good Enough", "Get Up" and "Summer Nights" are still great to me.

5150 Van Halen 1986 Sammy Hagar

Sammy Hagar resurrects the fallen Van Halen band after front man David Lee Roth exits. The album featues such hits as "Why Can't This Be Love" "5150" and " Summer Nights". With powerful new vocals from a veteran of rock and roll(Sammy Hagar)this album stays true to Van Halen form. Every song on this album seamlessly flows from one to the other and keeps you wanting more. This one is truly lighting in a bottle. Two thumbs way up!

This is one of the best albums that Van Halen ever made. Most of the songs on are still played on the radio today.

One of the greatest albums of all time. With Sammy's writing ability and vocals, and Alex and Eddie in the band, it doesn't get any better than this.

  Blase', radio friendly nonsense
Review created: 11/03/07

Van Halen forged a path to the top of the world of rock, with David Lee Roth's outlandish antics (and highly intelligent direction) coupled with Edward Van Halen's insane guitar theatrics. Michael Anthony and Alex Van Halen were one of the rock world's truly elite rhythm sections and together the star power of the REAL Van Halen was an inferno that unfortunately burned itself out during it's own meteoric rise.

With the addition of Sammy Hagar, Edward Van Halen found a lead singer who was interested in ballads, further keyboard experimentation and competition with the AOR rock bands of the day. "5150", the band's (and best) album with Sammy Hagar, showed a new Van Halen operating, one that was apparently a bit more interested in hit singles that kicking your butt with raw power. Edward was able to take the band in the direction/success that "Jump" hinted at, and "5150" was a smash success.

The downside is that Edward's guitar tone is lost, Alex relies as much on drum machines and electronics as he does on actual percussion, and the album is mired down by love songs. It's not the Van Halen that Van Halen fans grew up with and a brave new world was upon us...or was it a SAFE new world?

In any regards, the problems for Van Halen as a band were only beginning...
