So you have a shiny new SLR, (or at least, a new-to-you SLR) and you need a lens. I've recommended this lens to many people due to its solid performance across a wide range and the image stabilization. Plus, it's quite affordable. I swap lenses all the time and it really is quite a hassle. This lens is great for backyard picnics, where you'll be both close and far from your subjects in a medium-size environment. I brought this to the zoo once and it just didn't have the reach to fill an animal in the frame, even with the 1.6x crop factor. However, I noticed it was perfect for photographing the parents and kids around me! As it got darker, the IS worked quite well.

If you're going to get just ONE lens, I highly recommend this lens if you have a Canon 10D or earlier. If you have a Rebel, Rebel XT, or 20D and you want to compensate for the 1.6x crop, the Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS is the alternative. I would have gone for this option, but I was seeking a lens for my Canon 10D, which cannot use EF-S lenses.

  My favorite walk around lens
Review created: 04/21/06

I picked this lens up with my initial camera purchase as it fit my favorite shooting range. It has quickly become one of my favorite walk around lenses and coupled with IS you can’t go wrong. I find this to be the ideal lens for my outdoors, family events and vacations. It was perfectly suited for a recent trip to Disney and almost exclusively used. I was perfect for capturing all the daily events and with IS still being able to hand hold the camera and capture night time shows, fireworks, and indoor 'Character Meals' with almost all the pictures coming out sharp and clear (wish I could attach samples to show just how sharp).

Image quality produced of both color and sharpness are really very good with this particular lens. It is very close to the infamous L-Series glass falling only slightly shorter on color saturation/tonal depth, but still creating very accurate renditions. I have found sharpness only starts to have a noticeable difference at about 300% magnification when I compared similar shots taken with an L at the same focal distance. And I know, build quality doesn't equal L, but it is much better than most other non-L lenses. With USM, it is also very quiet with autofocus being fairly quick.

I have been very happy with this lens any time I have used it and for the price I would recommend it to anyone looking at it. I had seen a suggestion to the 17-85mm IS for true non-crop range. Personally I found the 17-85 lens to have too much barrel distortion for me to live with which is why I ruled it out quickly.

If I had any complaints one would be that there is an extremely minute amount of stiffness in the zoom ring, so that it almost feels as though it might stick …but it doesn’t. The other would be that I wished it started at 24mm end or slightly lower, but then that would make it compete too much with Canon’s 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM at more than half the price.

I gave this an excellent rating, because it would take a lens more than twice the price to give you better. And for non-pro situations many people don't need that level of build quality and overly clear sharpness (you won't see it in a 4X6 or 5X7 print).

Probably The Best Walk Around Lens There IS
Review created: 09/18/06

I recently purchased this lens, and have absolutely no regrets about it. This lens focuses extremely fast, and is super quiet. The photos come out awesome in both sharpness and color. I could not be happier. Haveing no L lenses I can't compre it to them, but I find it hard to believe that they would be that much better then this one as far as quality of the photos are concerned. I have tried it in all lighting situations, and yes the IS system really does help in low light situations. The range of this lens covers most shooting areas (28-135mm)that anyone will encouter, especially with the 1.6 crop factor taken into consideration on the Rebels and 10/20/30Ds (makes it a 45-216mm). So this is a great walk around lens, and has become the one that stays on my camera now probably 95% of the time.

I have removed two of my other lenses from my camera bag since purchasing this one, one of which is the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8, which is an awesome lens in itself.

This is one superb lens that I would highly recommend to anyone using a camera made by Canon that utilizes the Ef lens mount. The only other Canon lens compariable is the 24-105 "L", but for less then half the price you can get this one. So for those on a budget, like myself, that doesn't include the "L" glass, then this is definately a must have lens for your camera bag.

Pros:
1. IS System (awesome for low light)
2. USM (super fast and accurate focusing)
3. Quality of photos (always a must)
4. Could list multiple more reasons to have this lens, but will stop here.

Cons:
Haven't found any as of yet, and at this point I don't think I will.

Canon EF 28-135mm F3.5-5.6 IS Lens

I use this lens as my walk around lens on a Canon 20D. The Image Stabilization works great and adds at least a stop in low light for hand held pictures. This lens is well built with USM for fast auto focus. The images I get with this lens match up optically to the L lens I use and that is why it is on my camera more then the rest. My L lens are used for wildlife and scenic photography and this is used for my people shots, close up's of flowers, and walking around. This lens lets you focus up close and you have almost a macro lens when used at 135mm.
If you are on a limited budget this lens is a best buy and the most value for your money. I've sold as many images taken with this lens as the L series lens in my bag.
Lens Kit owned
Canon EF 300mm f4 IS L lens
Canon EF 400mm f5.6 L lens
Canon EF 17-40mm f4 L lens
Canon EF 70-200mm f4 L Lens
Canon EF 100mm f2.8 Macro
Canon EF 28-135mm f3.5-5.6 IS lens

The 28-135mm IS lens is light and very easy to carry and to use to get great images. The image quality in terms of looking at images taken on a photo shoot when compared to the L lens in my bag is similar enough to not be noticeable. The lens has a different use then most of the lens I use but it works well and the images are crisp and sharp with great color.
I have owned at one time or other shooting film and now digital most of the lens in Canon's EF lineup that had a reputation for shooting excellent images and this lens matches up very well with all of them.

Let's face it, if your budget is under $500, this is the best walk around lens.
If you want a little better, you have to go to those over $1000 lens, such as the 24-105mm L lens.
Since the minimum distance is 0.45m, I use this lens as my MACRO lens as well at 135mm.
Look no further, if your budget is limited.
IS is truely great! You have to hold the shutter half second to activate the IS, the take the shot in low light condition.
Great all purpose lens.

  Perfect Grap & Go Lens

I picked up this lense as a replacement to a Tamron 28-80MM zoom. The first thing that I noticed was that this thing is bigger than it looks, the second thing that I noticed is that it is quite heavy, and those are my only two complaints. This lense has seen quite a bit of action since I bought it. I use it for travel its 28-135MM range will cover most situations you will encounter in general travel photography if you don't want to haul around an additonal lens. Image Stabaiztion is nice, and I have gotten some use out of it, but I have also learned to to rely on it since it can only comphensate by about three stops. The glass on this is not "L" quality, but it very close, this lens is an affordable alternative to the "L" series if you are a a budget.

I chose this lens for it's range 28mm wide angle & 135mm telephoto. This is a good lens to keep on the camera. Although this is not an "L" lens which would cost about three times as much,I was surprised by the pictures from this lens. They are sharp and the color is rich with good contrast. The Image Stabilizer worked very good in low light situations. I would recomend this lens to anyone who is desireing to have a good walk around lens to keep on the camera, especially someone who is going on vacation and don't want to bring along the expensive equipment. But don't be fooled by the price, this lens can take some very good pictures

It's a great 'go to' lens

I've had this lens in my bag for over a year now. It has all but replaced my Canon 28-105. While it is a bit heavier than I like, the extended range to 135 more than makes up for the weight. The 28 to 35 range is covered, as well as the short to medium tele range of 85 to 135. It does fall into the category of travel lens. The IS system really does work; I've handheld this lens down to 1/30 at 135...always sharp. Seeing is believing. I still carry my 50 1.4 for low light situations as well as a 17-35 to cover the extra wide. Two bodies, three lenses covering 17 to 135 with the 28-135 doing most of the work. Focusing is fast and accurate on the Elan 7 and the Elan 2e.

  Great walkaround lens!

I bought this lens to compare performance against my Tamron 24-135mm, and to check out the IS function. I really can't find any faults with the performance. The IS works when needed, the USM autofocus is much better than the Tamron, and it's just as sharp, if not sharper at all extensions and f stops. For 35mm bodies, the focal length range is near ideal for general purpose shooting, and the IS will allow useful low light work. For digital shooters, the 28mm might not be wide enough. For any other Canon users, it's the perfect "Normal" carry zoom. Clint

  Canon's best value all-purpose lens
Review created: 01/07/08(updated 01/07/08)
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Canon's 28-135mm IS is a great lens even if you buy it on it's own... but it becomes and incredible deal when bought as part of a D40 kit.

The first thing that is noteable about the 28-135 is that it is not a kit lens, and it is not an EF-S lens. This lens was designed to work on full-frame cameras, including film cameras, the 5D and the 1Ds series. That means it is also a good choice for a 1D series camera (with the 1.3X crop). Of course it can also be used with the 1.6X crop EF-S compatible cameras like the Digital rebel, 30D and 40D.

I've owned this lens twice now, once some years ago before a switch to Nikon, and now I own it again having bought the D40 kit which included it. I find myself using it all the time, and in fact I sold my 24-105mm f/4L because I felt the 28-135 was close enough in quality and capability.

Photos are sharp at any focal length, and I have never experienced lens flare. Distortion is well controlled, as is chromatic abberation. Focusing is adequate, as is the IS function, but these are the areas where performance is less than the $1000+ L lenses... still for a full-frame lens of this quality, these are compromises I am willing to make since I saved $800 by swithing from the 24-105 to this lens.

In summary, Canon's 28-135 is an optically excellent lens with adequate focus and IS capabilities, available at a good price and compatible with all of Canon's EOS cameras. There are few lenses like that in either Canon or Nikon's line-up.

I have found this lense especially usefull at the baseball games, it has the image stabilizer which compensates for movement you really don't know is happening and since the gate security won't let in the monopods, this gives me an edge so to speak.

Fairly rugged, though not extremely. Pictures are very fine. Autofocus works as advertised. Because the body of the lens grows or shrinks for the telephoto to function, it makes the lens a little cumbersome to use. Other than this, very satisfied with it.

THis is an excellent lens! It goes everywhere with me.

Pros: Image Stabilizer of course. The zoom range is also very nice - providing a very large range from close up to the full 135mm.

Cons: The Weight is the only con i see in it, and also for some, the price. The lens in not a light one, but it works well for me because it feels more solid and strong in my hands.

Why did I buy it? I only had the standard lens and it just wasnt doing it for me. Wanting to stick with Canon, i browsed and found this lens with was a perfect walk around lens. ^_^ very happy with it

Canon strikes again with another well-rounded lens!
Review created: 07/17/07
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

The Canon 28-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS autofocus lens is a great piece of hardware for a reasonable price. The IS (or Image Stabilization) function is incredibly worthwhile and seems to work effectively out wide and up close. I typically use this lens for portraits in which I deem a shallower depth of field unnecessary, though it definitely is capable of being a well-rounded, versatile lens. As is normal with Canon products, the build quality is great for the price range of the equipment.

The Image Stabilization is amazing. It gives you at least an extra stop of usable light, by letting you put the shutter speed slower. The auto focus is many times better than the kit lens that came with my canon 20d.

  Good enough...
Review created: 02/18/08

I bought this lens, like so many other buyers, because I wanted a decent walk-a-round lens with IS capabilities. I wasn't disappointed with my ebay purchase because I was able to pick up a new one of these at a little less than 200.00 off retail- so it was a deal for me.
The build quality was a tad disappointing because the front of the lens does have a wobble which other reviews have noted- the IS also works as advertised. I have taken about a hundred or more photos under various lighting conditions of various subjects and am satisfied with the overall look and sharpness of the images. I like the detail and color that I have been getting- is it L quality? No, but I wouldn't want a L lens for my photo trips in the Rocky Mountains.
The key about this lens for me is that it is worth every penny that I paid for it; however, if I had bought it for the retail price at our local camera shop or at Best Buy, I would have questioned the value for the price (B&H has it for a price that I could live with). It does exactly what I expected for the money that I spent for it- could one ask for any more?

This lens, with Image Stabilization, delivers a sharper image. Period.
I enlarge images that I photograph into medium size digital prints, some
are considered large. For example 44"x 18." The clarity of detail in these larger prints is directly related to this lens. This is a product that
delivers on its promise. Helps the prints sell themselves. Good value via the
eBay purchase process.

Focus is crisp and ultra- fast, and the Image Stabilizer makes hand holding possible when you don't have a tripod handy. Plain and simple, I love this lens!

Great lens to use around town. I've taken it to multiple trips and didn't fire one disappionting shot. One thing that it does miss is the wide angle, but thats what you have an 18mm for. Great all around lens you won't be disappionted. It has a good feel to it on my canon xti, nice and sturdy build, you don't need anything else.

This is a lot of lens for the money. Especially considering you can buy one for under $400.00 on ebay. This is my primary lens on the Canon 40D. I use it as a point and shoot lens and it covers a variety of conditions. I use it almost daily to shoot pictures in and around the house. It is also used to shoot pics for most of my items on e-bay. The EF 24-70 2.8 IS is a better lens, but it is also 3 times the money..

For the price, this lens will give you excellent images. Although thought not as good as an "L" series will produce, it's nearly as good and for more than 1/2 the price. This is a great walk around lens, and an excellent one to start off with. Eventually I decided more range, and bought the 70-200L(which is a discussion for another day), but this is an excellent starter lens. The IS is great for low light situations when using it hand held, and it focuses fast and quietly to give you sharp images. Overall an excellent lens for the price!
