  Sony Playstation
Review created: 12/10/08(updated 01/07/09)

All of the following was copied from wikipedia, respectively. (Since they know more than me.)

The PlayStation (abbreviated PS, PSone, PS1, or informally as PSX) is a 32-bit fifth generation video game console released by Sony Computer Entertainment in December 1994.

The PlayStation was the first of the ubiquitous PlayStation series of console and handheld game devices. Successor consoles and upgrades include the Net Yaroze, PS one, PocketStation, PlayStation 2, a revised slimline PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, a revised PlayStation Portable Slim and Lite, PSX, and the PlayStation 3. On March 31 2005, the PlayStation and PS one reached a combined total of 102.49 million units shipped, becoming the first video game console to reach the 100 million mark. As of July 20, 2008, the PlayStation has sold 102 million units. Sony ceased production of the PlayStation on March 23, 2006, over 11 years since it was first produced.

Legacy

The success of the PlayStation is widely believed to have influenced the demise of the cartridge-based home console. While not the first system to utilize an optical disc format, it was the first success story, and ended up going head-to-head with the last major home console to rely on proprietary cartridges—the Nintendo 64.

Nintendo was very public about its skepticism toward using CDs and DVDs to store games, citing longer load times and durability issues. It was widely speculated that the company was even more concerned with copyright infringement, given its substantial reliance on licensing and exclusive titles for its revenue.

The increasing complexity of games (in content, graphics, and sound) pushed cartridges to their storage limits and this fact began to turn off third party developers. Also, CDs were appealing to publishers due to the fact that they could be produced at a significantly lower cost and offered more flexibility (it was easy to change production to meet demand). In turn, they were able to pass the lower costs onto consumers. One major industry disadvantage of CDs was illegal copying due to the advent of CD burners and mod chips; however, this ironically became a selling point of the PlayStation. The PlayStation's production was discontinued on March 23, 2006.

Quality of Construction

The first batch of PlayStations used a KSM-440AAM laser unit whose case and all movable parts were completely made out of plastic. Over time, friction caused the plastic tray to wear out—usually unevenly. The placement of the laser unit close to the power supply accelerated wear because of the additional heat, which made the plastic even more vulnerable to friction. Eventually, the tray would become so worn that the laser no longer pointed directly at the CD and games would no longer load. Sony eventually fixed the problem by making the tray out of die-cast metal and placing the laser unit farther away from the power supply on later models of the PlayStation.

Some units, particularly the early 100x models, would be unable to play FMV or music correctly, resulting in skipping or freezing. In more extreme cases the PlayStation would only work correctly when turned onto its side or upside down.

  GREAT PSX CONSOLE FROM EBAY!
Review created: 11/08/09

As an electronic engineer and game console collector, this one (PSX model 7501) was an addition to my colection, also i have several Sony Playstation and i collect them by serial number and manufacturing dates, fortunately i got very good luck getting this one from EBAY, this model was one of earliest coming from production line in Japan, prior to the next model or PSX 9001, also i have the latest models (PsOnes)of a grand total of 156 Sony PSX game consoles!.
I have the 1st and 4th Atari 2600 models coming from the production lines to the general public (No prototypes)from the latest 70's, I am not kidding!!!.
One of my hobbie projects was the design for custom made IDE interface for a 500gb hard drive attached to a Psone with 500 virtual Cd-Rom drives\games, and the faster boot\load ever made, a light-speed SUPER PSONE that smoke every XBOX II or PSX 3.

Best reggards

  PlayStation Admiration
Review created: 05/10/09

I personally, think that video game systems have gone....well overload. There are so many diffrent consoles avaliable. When I was growing up I didn't play video games..... my parents didn't see a reason for it. I remember playing Uncle Gills' pong game and thought that was totally awsome. My half-brother had Atari....I was jelous. Then, a few years later Upstairs' neighbor had NES or SNES. I cried inside as I sat silently.... only allowed to watch them play when I visited their apartment.
One day I grew up and found myself instantly with children.... children who grew up and wanted to go to the arcade....everyday. It was expensive to do everyday.... even once a week. An ex-boyfriend gave us SNES....I also had found an NES at a secondhand store. Games were easy to comeby because PStation just came out and was all a rage. My sons understood why we couldn't just get a PlayStation.
One Christmas....my half brother gave my sons his old PlayStation because my brother was getting a PS2. Then my half brother wanted the memory card back that he had gave to my kids.Sad. I found myself online ordering oodles an oodles of games. My sons forgot about NES/SNES an the countless hours they spent. PlayStation was the big man on campus. As they grew into Junior High along came PlayStation II. By that time each child had their own PlayStation and which was sat aside...... Our TV was over took by teenagers, oh what a fix they had to have.
Then, they moved out, one son xbox360. Didn't last long... it was stole by a college roomate. Other son has turned toward PC and firefighting job. Our daughter is last in line. We bought a FX-Twin to play dis-regarded S-NES games. Kept the old PS2. Have uncountable PC's. Just bought a PS1 cause nothing can beat such gaming fun.

I really question what the future holds for our four year old daughters' gaming experiance. I am excited I can't wait... gaming is a big part of our lives. It opens up conversations on a totally diffrent level.... Allot of parents just don't understand it because they are not involved or taking time out to try and understand their own children. Take the challenge and try it for a month.... let your teenager find you playing their games and having a little fun. Next thing you know your connecting into their world and they will be not just your son/daughter but also your best friend.... in a manner of saying. My son told me his most private moment {sex} and was very open with telling me. He came to me and talked to me, his mother, about such experiance. Some people might consider that totally wrong but.... I am proud that my son felt comfortable talking to me. I hope our daughter feels the same way and feels that no matter what she can come to us and share her experiances with us.

It's important to connect with your child so that you know they are safe and to know just what they are doing. I admire PlayStation because without such great systems communication between my children and I would not have been the same. Only you as a true caring parent can find ways to open freedom of communication between child and parent. That child.... is your future.... not just an non-commutive game player.

Thank You makers of PlayStation!
We love you

Sony Playstation One - The Dawning of a New Era
Review created: 09/01/08

About the time Sony Playstation one came out. Everybody was suprised. We had never seen a console from sony before. It was a great idea, becuase Back then we only had Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo. (Cartridge Video Game Systems)

There are a handfull of good games for Playstation 1 like Final Fantasy. Area 51, Command and Conquer. Aswell as later releases like Tony Hawk's Pro Skater III, one of the biggest games for the PSX console.

Other than that, PSX one has the ability to also play music CD's with some great looking screen savers (Equalizer Effects).

Everybody loved the idea of the memory cards so much, that so brought so much Revenue from PSX one that they made a PSX 2.

This is a very good system, and they last for a long time. Especially if you take good care of them.

  Sony Playstation PSCH-1001
Review created: 04/15/09

This model of the original playstation does an excellent job of playing a CD. I use it in my system as the primary CD player. There are probably a number of contributing reasons why the CD playback is well thought of including the Class A output amplifier (I am fairly sure of that), the plastic case, the top loading system, RCA outputs which allow you to pick your own poison (interconnects), small footprint allowing you to easily isolate it from vibration and simplicity. About the only thing that breaks is the laser lens drive mechanism and that is a $20 or less repair job.

Really good sound, cheap, but no features. Still an excellent deal.

Love: CD sound quality; games are inexpensive

Like: Small, tight, non-metallic case; no CD drawer, holds CD snugly; wide selection of games are available

Dislike: Video resolution is dated (I'm writing in 2009) and picture often noisy; CD sometimes skips on music CD's; using as CD player can be done without the video monitor, but not without a game controller inserted, and funtionality is very limited without the video monitor on to see the controls.

Would I buy again? Yes, without a doubt.

  Another one for the collection.
Review created: 05/02/10

I just had to get one of this. Had two of them that I sold/gave away when I got my PS2; but since PS1 games no longer play on new Playstation consoles & being that I have over 50 PS1 games decided to get back one to keep( I still have my original ATARI system & several game cartridges that every now & then I dust off & play with. Game Systems keep only getting better, and even though the graphics & effects are not as good, there's something about playing on the old game consoles that makes it all worth it.

  Playstation 1 Review
Review created: 10/21/09

The Sony Playstation 1 (PS1) is an amazing console. One of the things I love most about this console is how it was made. It's small, light weight, low in price, and best of all it doesn't break as easily as the Playstation 2 (as far as I know, no Disc Read Errors, either)! Not to mention that even if a PS1 disc is scratched it can still be read, whereas with newer consoles you get a few scratches and the blasted thing won't read!

The reason I bought this system was so I could save my PS1 games on it. See, my PS2 was never able to do that. I can't tell you how nice it is to finally play games and not worry about dying and having to start the whole level of over again!

Some may not like the PS1 simply because the graphics are not nearly as spectacular as today's PS3 and Xbox 360, but if you're a nut for the old Final Fantasy series and Star Wars games like I am, $30 isn't really that much to pay.

Nice person solve all the problems quickly! http://sdd-fanatico.blogspot.com/
I bought the Sony Playstation, several weeks ago and was immediately impressed with the article. It has 10 games. The condition are pretty good. My only complaint is that the menu system on the phone makes you click four times before you can find someone in the address book, set an alarm, or perform a additional functions. Overall, I'd recommend the this console video game if you have little childrens like me!.

  Still a Great Console
Review created: 04/03/09

Before I got my Playstation, I already owned a PS2 and PS3. When my PS3 broke, I lost a good bit of my respect for Sony for having such an inferior product. However, since playing the original PS I know that Sony is still one of the best and the PS3 bluray drive problem will be fixed. Enough of that blabling. The Playstation has a huge game library. The consoles are cheap in price, but rich in fun. If you want a console that helped out with the consoles we have today what other one to get than a Playstation.

Review created: 02/14/08

The PS1 is still one of the best classic game consoles around and works great till this day. Sony makes a great product and it was way ahead of its time being one of the first to put games on the DVD.I highly recommend this classic console to anyone who loves the classics. Nice small design very compact for its time even at todays standards almost as small as the Wii.Alot of games still available for this console new or used.

The reason for not "excellent" is because, yes, the PS2 is backwards compatible. But I still like playing it. It was a huge step forward in the gaming business as far as graphics and controls are concerned. Some of the best games that you play on a PS2 are infact Playstation games, not PS2 games. Games like Crash Bandicoot are still way better than some of the new games even though the new games might be more technologically advanced. Also the game, I.Q., is still wicked awesome compared to all other PS and PS2 games. Even in a used condition is still commands prices similar to the brand new games out there.
I've never had a problem with mine, it's never broken or skipped or frozen or anything. It's a fantastic system that has great games that are entertaining and challenging.

  Memories for my Hubby
Review created: 02/10/10

I bought the PlayStation as a late Christmas gift for my husband. He had one quite a few years ago and always enjoyed it. We were originally searching for a particular game, which my husband thought was for xbox, when we realized that it is a PS1 game. I suggested that we search for the PS1 system and we found one that was selling along with a bunch of games, including the one that he wanted, for an awesome price. My husband has really been enjoying it. It's interesting to see the simplicity of the graphics now, compared to the new state-of-the-art systems, and it brings back enjoyable memories for him.

Oh the nostalgic joys of last-generation videogaming
Review created: 05/16/09

This item was an cherry blossom in the aching wind of what life derives a chief satisfaction from. A great strand that spreads between the stars, like The Great Attractor forming inconclusive bets on the validity of it's own existence. I'm so pleased that I own a Sony Playstation, I just might swallow the sky and its hidden plane-roads while the birds sit on the edge of their seats.

As far as technical details, it's true that the PS2 is a better deal, giving many more options for a still reasonable amount of money, but I am only interested in using this for one game, at the moment, (that being all I have time to play) and in that circumstance there is no reason to upgrade to a next-generation console.
I would, however, suggest that any PS1 buyers go for the newer, smaller versions. There is a common problem involving the optical-reader deteriorating, necessitating that the console be flipped on its side or upside down to work.
This one doesn't have that, fortunately, but that specific problem is why I had to buy a new one.
The newer the model is (even of older-generation consoles) the better you can generally trust it.

Now, back to the important stuff:

In Xanadu did Kubla Khan a stately pleasure dome decree,
where Alph, the sacred river ran
through caverns measureless to etc. etc. etc.

Sony made a big leap in tech with the release of this system beating out nintendo for top spot in game machine sales. The use of cd media for games was out at the time but Sony brought it mainstream. With this system you now had a machine to play games and cds and a new market for gamers young adults. I chose this system for its games i loved them when they came out and i still do!!!

PSOne Still One Of My Favorite Gameing Units

If You Want A Gaming System And Do Not Want To Spend A Ton Of Cash And You Don't Want To Go Really Classic The PlayStation One Is The Best Machine To Pick. You Can Find It On eBay For Most Of The Time Less Than 20 Bucks And Games For Even Cheaper. This System Uses CDs Instead Of Cartridges With Has Its Good Points And Bad, Good Points Being Less Material To Make A Game And Larger Storage Space On The Media Its Self, Bad Points Is That CDs Scratch Easily. The Graphics On This System Are Great For The Time It Was Made But Compared To The Newer Gaming Systems Available Now And Days If Fails In Comparison. Over All I Love The PSone ,Its Has Hundreds Of Game Titles To Choose From And The Best RPGs Ever Made Like Final Fantasy 7. Even If You Have The Newer Systems I Would Tell You To Grab A Old PlayStation One For The Times You Get Bored Of The Other Systems.

  Oldie but a Goodie
Review created: 08/04/08

The older playstations may not have to graphics of the new ones on the market, but they seem to work so much better. My sister and her family have Playstation 2 and 3...they continue to have nothing but trouble with them. The orginial playstation doesn't seem to loose the ability to scan the discs like the newer ones do. We bought this one for the family... to use for our 6 year old and us. We like to play Jeopardy on it and then some of the simpler games for our daughter. It just seems to be a better quality and seems to not be as sensitive as the others now made.

  Sony Playstation 1 Gaming Console
Review created: 01/11/08

The original Playstation is far easier to play and succeed for the novice gamer. Gaming systems have become too difficult for me, and too expensive, so I went with a proven good time from the past. It still has memory cards to save game progress, and many games are challenging. Obviously with technology from over a decade ago, the graphics are not good at all, but that hasn't kept me from enjoying the Playstation for many hours already!

Playstation 1 Great For First Time Gamers
Review created: 11/02/07
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

The Playstation 1 (PS1) has been a long lasting game for a reason...it is, and will be for a long time to come, a fabulous gaming console with tons to offer. These consoles can be found on Ebay (and other sites) fairly cheap (a lot cheaper than PS2 or PS3 systems) and most times in very good condition, and even with a lot of extras! The low cost can really be a benefit to those shoppers/bidders looking to purchase for children/young/new gamers. There are, or so I've heard, over 1200 titles for the PS1. This gives players a lot of options in the choices of games that they get. There are tons of family/kid friendly games out there to introduce first time players to the world of gaming that are rather simple to control and understand. Not to mention these games are usually in used condition making them a lot cheaper to buy!!

The great thing was the console came with 16 games, 4 controllers, a fishing reel controller and a steering wheel for racing games. It also had 3 memory cards!!! My son had just won a PlayStation 1 console at school and we were having difficulty finding games, controllers and accesories for it....now we have it all at one GREAT price. Thats the reason I always look at EBay for anything I'm considering purchasing.

I have been a passionate audiophile for many years now, so it is not without some experience and knowledge that I say that this Sony Playstation 1001 is an excellent high end sounding cd player. Of course there is no display, no fast forward or reverse (though one can change whole tracks forward and backward), but what a beautiful warm sound! Believe it!

  PS1 -still a good system

The console was in very good cosmetic shape and functioned perfectly. It was a great, phenomenal system when it first hit the market and I feel with several hit titles, is still a fantastic system a significant collector's item.

I bought it mostly due to my desire to be an avid collector of games. The PS1 represented a significant mark in video gaming history. Apart from all the strengths of the system, it was also key as it basically dominated the Sega Saturn and provided Nintendo with its first real competition outside of Sega.

Great buy all the way.

  old skool, almost
Review created: 02/06/08

I only buy video game systems when a Resident Evil game comes out, and back in the day, I bought a Playstation to play the original Resident Evil. At this point in time it seems that the Playstation is somewhat obsolete, as both the PS2 and the PS3 are backwards compatible, meaning you can play previous generation games on the newer consoles...So far with only one exception that I've come across: X-Files: the Game. For some reason, the cursor gets cloned on the PS2, making gameplay awkward and frustrating. Hence, the backwards-backwards compatibility purchase of the original PS, which plays the game perfectly...

So, unless you are gonna play the X-files game for the original system, I would recommend getting a PS2 or 3. Unless you're trying to hold onto what remains of the past, the golden age...but that's a choice only you can make.

I believe the Sony Playstation is an excellent budget gaming system. There are many titles available, and most are great deals. I would suggest checking out a PS2 before buying the PS1 though. The PS2 is backwards compatible, and will offer newer games than the PS1. Both can be found at great prices on eBay.
