Ozon's most unnerving work!
Review created: 09/02/06(updated 12/16/06)

In a little deserted beach town, a women and her baby are at home waiting patiently for her husband to return home from his business trip in Paris.
While, we are able to see the women's frustration with being alone with her baby, and nobody else. In fact, when she decides to take the baby to the beach with her for a relaxing time, she attempts to pick up a book and start reading it, but eventually the baby wants more attention and she can't read it.
When they return home, the women begins giving her baby a bath until she is interrupted by a knock on the door, she jumps up and answers the door, with her baby still in the tub.
At the door; is a brute and somewhat pushy hitchhiker who not really asks the other women if she can camp on her property, but soon demands it.
When the women finally agrees to letting the hitchhiker pitch a tent in her yard, the women becomes wildly infatuated with the hitchhiker and will invite her in for a dinner. At the dinner table; the hitchhiker is rude and almost pigg-ish.. She licks her plate clean with her tongue and then rudely accepts more wine.
Eventually, we learn that the hitchhiker is growing the loathe the women that invited her into her home... We see that the hitchhiker becomes curious about how to test the other women on her mothering skills. We are able to see that in this film, the mother is probably a typical stressed and un-prepared mother for a baby. We constantly see that the baby cries and the mother attends the baby and then leaves it screaming and crying.
Eventually, there is another dinner between the hitchhiker and the mother. The hitchhiker starts a disturbing conversation about birth... When she asks the mother extremely graphic and personal questions, the hitchhiker then admits that she "gave birth, but the baby died". The mother felt remorse for a moment, and asked what happened, the hitchhiker replied "don't worry, I aborted it!" The conversation then ended on a really gross note, and an interruption by telephone caused the mother to relieve herself of the award situation and to her surprise it was her husband on the phone, saying that he will be returning the next day. She then tells the hitchhiker, and then invites the hitchhiker to stay in the house for a night, the hitchhiker accepts... And all hell is let loose.
The ending of the film is really quite twisted and almost too sick to imagine...
I will say a few things cautioning anyone seeing this film: There are a lot of graphic things in this movie, including a scene involving a toilet and a toothbrush, a scene involving oral sex, a couple of masturbation scenes, and then there's the conversations; which are alone quite unnerving to listen to.
Ozon's direction of this film, was absolutely mesmerizing! He picked the best people to play each character, his direction of the sea was completely beautiful, and his capture of the mother's frustration and the baby's yearn for attention was also beautifully grasped.
This movie deserves all 5/5!
