The story is supposedly based on truth - a professor at Hong Kong University dismissed because of alcoholism and his relationship with a student. Despite this, the story is painfully cliched: young Chinese guy meets older gweilo/Westerner. It also has the usual gay film 'downer' of an attempted suicide (by me!). They supposedly live happily ever after, which is something of a novelty, especially as the guy played the student Mark was almost sick every time he thought of the role he was playing!
The film has a very 'local' Hong Kong feel - that's probably its high point. Apart from that the Director didn't pay the actors, explaining that all the funds allocated by the HK Development Council had been used on production and filming! Well, it was certainly an education.
