Tombstone is the best movie of all the Wyatt Earp sagas I have seen, and among the best of great western’s film history! It is considered by many critics to be the best film about the Gunfight at O.K. Corral not only because of its recreation of the actual conflict, but because the film depicts the battle waged between good and evil!

Tombstone offers a more accurate depiction of the 30 second gun battle with greater depth and historical detail. In fact, the shootout at the O.K. Corral in this movie was filmed exactly as the court transcripts indicated.

Though much of the film is historically accurate, it has notable flaws. The most significant historical flaw is there is no mention of the Wells Fargo stagecoach robbery on March 15, 1881. This event encouraged Wyatt Earp (Kurt Russell) to take the job as sheriff from John Behan (Jon Tenney) and later led him to strike a deal with Ike Clanton (Stephen Lang).

By ommiting this story, the importance of the Clanton family and the plot were understated. Curly Bill Brocious (Powers Boothe) and Johnny Ringo (Michael Biehn) were only loose allies of the Clantons who were the Earp's main enemies.

Regardless, the movie follows the OK Corral story about Wyatt Earp and his brothers going to Tombstone to make their fortune. After the famous gun fight, Wyatt's older brother Virgil (Sam Elliott) is crippled by a gunshot wound and his younger brother Morgan (Bill Paxton) takes a fatal bullet to the back. Seeking vengeance on a Biblical scale, Wyatt is accompanied by Doc Holiday (Val Kilmer), who in spite of his consumption (tuberculosis), is loyal and extremely deadly with his short barreled colt.

The acting is superb and the fast paced story keeps you hanging on each scene. I especially enjoy Val Kilmer's adaptation of Doc Holliday. Although Kurt Russell is excellent as the main protagonist Wyatt Earp, it is clearly Val Kilmer's character that makes the film. His acting is impeccable and in my opinion, his character stole every scene, and his imitation of a true Southern gentleman was even to include a famous drawl that was brilliant!

I absolutely enjoyed this movie and strongly recommend it to all movie fans.

Not just one of the best westerns...

Tombstone is not just one of the best westerns ever made, it is one of the best movies ever made. Val Kilmer made tuberculosis look HOT! Kurt Russell is a smoking Wyatt Earp. These characters are so believeably portrayed by the actors/actresses it is unbelievable. (If that makes sense.) If you need a good movie, you can't go wrong with Tombstone.

  The Best Tombstone of all
Review created: 06/06/07

Filmed on location near Tombstone, which looks today as it did in 1881 since building (with bullet holes) are preserved. This film, generally historically accurate, Kurt Russell is the best Wyatt Earpp of all and Val Kilmer's rendition of Doc Holliday is truly classic, not only best of the film but far and away the best of his career. Just as Robert DeNiro probably outdid the real Capone in The Untouchables, Kilmer "out-Doc Hollidayed" the real dentist Doc Holliday as the drunken, defiantly careless, scary gunslinger he was. See the live reenactment of the famous gunfight in Tombstone -- it's very real and deafening!!! And don't forget to visit Boot Hill, where one grave marker says. "Here lies Lester Moore, 4 slugs from a 44, No less no more." -Ed Elsner

Clantons vs Earps
The Best movie about the O.K. Corral ever made!
Kurt Russell's portray'al of Wyatt Earp is wonderful but Val Kilmer steals the show with his portray'al of Doc Holiday.
The movie moves along at a fast paste Hang on this is one ride you wont want to miss!
Tombstone has a star studded cast which includes, Michael Biehn, Powers Boothe, Dana Delany, Sam Elliott, Bill Paxton, Jason Priestley, Billy Zane, Charlton Heston, Billy Bob Thorton, and many many more veteran western actors.
The Vista Series has the Directors cut of the movie and many other special features which include the making of the movie plus other goodies.
Dont rent it go out and buy it its well worth it.

Tombstone - This was a great story and movie. Some of the minor things were embellished for the movie from what I understand but the major things were there. It's a very interesting time in American history. Everyone should know at least a little about it and this movie is a good way to start.

Just an overall outstanding western. I especially loved Val Kilmer's role as Doc Holliday. I thought Val Kilmer portrayed Doc Holliday's image the way I imagined Holliday to be - intelligent and tough ! Everybody in Tombstone played excellent parts. Definitely an action-packed western. Love it !

My all time favorite movie, don't know how many times I've watched it. It has some historical inaccuracies, but it's by far (in my opinion) the best movie ever made. Val Kilmer does the most believable Doc Holliday ever. Kurt Russell is a hot Wyatt Earp (for the ladies) and Sam Elliot as one of the Earp brothers is great too.
Every scene in this movie is a classic! Best movie ever!

This is an actual true rendition of the gun fight at OK Corral and the subsequent events before and after the incident. Acting is superb and it holds true how Wyatt Earp put down a lawless gang of cowboys and actually survived. Acting and drama throughout will not disappoint. Even Though the movie was made in 1997, it still will inspire.

  Tombstone
Review created: 11/01/09

Definitely one of the BEST Westerns made recently and arguably-possibly
one of the all time greats, and with a boatload of stars! In this
fictionalized drama based on real life characters, legendary marshall
Wyatt Earp played by Kurt Russell (Soldier, Escape to L.A., Executive
Decision, Breakdown, etc), now a weary gunfighter, joins his brothers
Morgan (Bill Paxton-Twister, U-571, Frailty, A Bright Shining Lie, etc)
and Virgil (Sam Elliott-The Sacketts, We Were Soldiers, Road House,
Gettysburg, etc) to pursue their collective fortune in the thriving
mining town of Tombstone. But Earp is forced to don a badge again and
get help from his notorious pal Doc Holliday played by Val Kilmer (The
Ghost and the Darkness, The Saint, Heat, Felon, etc) when a gang of
outlaws called the Cowboys try to take over the town. Kilmer really
gives the performance of his career and plays the tuberculosis filled
Holiday complete with his Georgia drawl and the pale sweat that comes
with the disease. His own words, whether he is in depressing lament or
the smooth tenacity that he uses when about to kill someone-the scenes
that comes with them are worth the price of the movie alone, definitely
an Oscar winning performance (but did not win). The director of the
movie has only had four big screen tries--but all have been supported
by the public very well at the box office (Rambo First Blood Part II,
Cobra, Leviathan, etc). Definitely a GREAT movie to watch and enjoy,
whether you like Westerns or not- chances are you will enjoy this one
a great deal. Also, it should appeal to action and adventure lovers.
Worth every cent of the retail price- and definitely a keeper if you
are a collector of dvds, a bargain to get it at a reduced Ebay price.

We had the VHS version of Tombstone and so decided to get the DVD version. The stunning authentic costumes and firearms and the terrific job of the actors make this a worthwhile version. I should have bought the collector's edition though and I may later on, since there is no behind the scenes in this version.

Unbelievable Cast and Story! I can watch this movie over and over. This is definitely better than the other Earp movie. Val is excellent as Doc, and Kurt does a fantastic job as Wyatt Earp. You forget who the actors are! That's what I like the most about this film.
