Heaven is in the Eye of the Beholder
Review created: 04/27/08

I need to point out right at the start, that I really don't care for Warren Beatty. After the first film I saw him in, I have avoided most others he has done. I didn't have high expectations this time either.
"Heaven Can Wait" surprised me. I found Joe's character charming and funny and quite well done by this actor. Julie Christie always is a pleasure to watch, and one of my favorites. Good screenplay, and very funny overall.
Joe is a backup football player who finally gets his one chance to play first string quarterback for the Rams but before his first game,is involved in a car/bike collision(or looks to his monitoring angel like he will be) and is snatched by said angel prematurely on spec. Unfortunately for Joe (and somewhat for the angel) his number really wasn't going to be up. This mess must now be corrected, and a new body for Joe found. He has one stipulation, it's got to be an athletic one in order for him to pursue his dream. He ends up briefly in the body of a ruthless, (and not particularly bright) industrialist who is the victim of a murder plot by his wife and business secretary. It is not going to be the last attempt.

I like football anyway and the action scenes were not overdone here like so many more recent films involving the sport. This film would have gotten 5 stars from me but I did NOT care so much for the ending, which to me did not make things right for Joe in any real sense. ( He does get to play in the Super Bowl, his great dream, but, guess what? He DOESN'T get to remember it, not as JOE anyway, which I rather thought was the point.)However, up to then it was engaging, and entertaining and thoroughly worth the watch.

When you find a movie that can make you laugh, think and feel comfortable watching even when you are with others, it is one you want to see and share many times, so why not just buy it to own. Try this one on for size -- it's a "one size fits all" type movie.

  Heaven Can Wait
Review created: 04/08/07(updated 02/28/08)

This movie was released in 1978 and I still enjoy watching it.
I think Warren Beatty was great with Julie Christie. A story of a Vain, self-centered professional football player(Warren... was he playing himself?)who is taken too early by the angel of death, seems the angel was new at the job. Warren's character complains about not getting to play in the Super Bowl. A new body has to be found. During the process of finding a new body to live in...he assumes the identity of a wealthy man(Mr. Farnsworth). Finds out the man is totally self -centered & vain like himself. He is introduced to Betty, Julie Christie's character who is fighting to protect her village from the possibility of Mr. Farnsworth's company building a pollution producing plant. They meet and it's Love at first sight. She has a life changing effect on him.
It's a romantic comedy at it's best! PURE FANTASY? You decide. I believe it can happen..:)
