Neo Contra (PlayStation 2, 2004)

Neo Contra is a great game for a quick round of explosive action. Though there are initially only 4 levels to play, earning higher rankings in each level through the hit rating system unlocks the last 3 levels, with 3 associated different endings. Though many consider this a short game compared to previous Contra releases in the series (and also much easier to beat), the game isn't about finishing the 7 levels, rather, the goal is to get as high a ranking as possible. This is done by avoiding death (each death subtracts 1%), not using continues, and destroying all non-infinite enemies. High rankings in turn unlock new costumes/characters to play and other bonuses. The weapon system is different than previous Contras as well; now the player has the option to choose a weapon set (consisting of 3 weapons) that remain with the player thoughout that instance of the game. The Spread Shot is back by popular demand, though it fires more like a long-range shotgun. New weapon sets are unlocked after completing the 3 hidden levels. Also, the old 2D side scrolling view has been replaced with an aerial top-down 3D view reminiscent of games like Ikari Warriors. The characters can no longer jump but instead a dodge/roll function has been added.

Though many diehard Contra fans may not like the new gameplay or the plot or characters in this newest Contra release (due to the overall absurdness of the character design and story), it is said that Neo Contra is the game in the series that pokes fun of other military action games (such as Metal Gear and previous Contras). Basically, it is meant to be a parody and is not meant to be taken seriously. The game is still very fun to play however, regardless of the ridiculous characters/bosses and overboard action sequences. The action in Neo Contra is exceptionally entertaining, once the player looks at the game with a sense of humor. Neo Contra is a great game if the player does not have much time and wants to get into the action quickly. It is one of the best games I have played recently, but not all Contra fans will like the new changes.
