Harmony Guides: Volume 6 in the Series

This is Volume 6 in the Harmony Guides series of stitch dictionaries. This book includes instructions for basic stitches, lace patterns, motifs (granny squares and variations thereof), filet, clusters, shells, bobbles and loops. If you are looking for one good, basic, high-quality stitch dictionary on the topic of crochet, this book is for you! It offers a little bit of everything. The directions are easy to understand, and the photos and diagrams are really clear.
This is not a project book. It does not contain patterns for finished items like doilies or sweaters. I think that this book will be most helpful to people who want to design their own crocheted items. I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in designing needlework, or interested in fashion design. If you are just interested in making finished projects from existing crochet patterns, this book would probably not be a necessary part of your library, although it is helpful to own under any circumstances.
This is a pretty general book and it doesn't dig too deeply into any one area, so if you are looking for, say, granny square patterns it would probably be better for you to get a specific book that just focuses on grannies (I like Leisure Arts' leaflet called "99 Granny Squares to Crochet"; it has some really cute ones.) Same with filet crochet; there are some filet crochet stitches but not all that many, so if you are specifically interested in filet crochet than it would be better to buy a reference that is more geared just to filet. I also recommend the Mon Tricot stitch dictionaries which have some very interesting stitches in them (many of them feature both knitting and crochet stitches.)
I do love this book, and I am very happy to recommend it to others.
