30 Banjo Classics by Nashville Banjos (CD, Oct-2003, King Records USA)

If you like listening to banjo music, this CD is an excellent choice. If you don't, this should help change your mind. Most of the songs are played in a pretty upbeat manner (hey, we're talking banjo music here). There aren't any words except a couple shouts in "Cotton Eyed Joe," which might be some dance calls...I don't know. I found that "30 Banjo Classics" was great to listen to while I was working because of the fast beat and no words. If I listen to music with words I tend to sing along, which slows me down a little, especially if the work involves thinking.

If you haven't heard any of these songs before, be aware that banjos are far from being the only musical instrument on the CD. They are also accompanied by fiddles and a muted trumpet, for example. Those are the times when the stereo recording is most evident. In some of the songs it is really easy to distinguish the tune, such as in Dixie, which sounds like it is played by a single banjo. In other songs it's harder because of the extra notes, but then you can almost smell the fingers smoking as they fly across the strings.
