A true classic. This game from the early days of Super Nintendo offers an excellent quest into the heart of Dracula's keep, Castlevania. It is basically a remake of the original with upgraded weapons, moves, graphics, and music. For its time, the colors and special effects are remarkable. The enemies are all cool and challenging, with many famous monsters making an appearance including Frankenstein, Medusa, the Mummy, the Grim Reaper, Count Dracula himself, and countless others. Controls are tight and responsive, but they do take a little getting used to. Simon Belmont himself is a total badass in all his great side-scrolling glory. Of further note, the music contains old and new songs from the series, and I feel they are some of the best ever, especially when you defeat the boss of each stage and collect the magical orb. If you are a fan of the series or enjoy good action and adventure, pick it up as soon as you can. Trust me, this game has aged very well.

I'm not a Castlevania fan but Super Castlevania IV is a very interesting and great game. The new innovations of a whip plus all of the intersting enemies made this game a very enjoyable one.

  Super Castlevania 4

This is the first Castlevania title to ever hit the shelves for a Super Nintendo game. I bought the game a long time ago, and back in September broke out my Super Nintendo and dusted it off and started playing the older titles that I had. This particular game keeps reminding me just how difficult the game was to complete, for the difficulty of the game was somewhat on the upper medium. When playing the game, it reminded me of the 8 directional whip that Belmont comes equipped with, and the "swinging" part from place to place got pretty tricky.

This game is another one of the few games that I have played that really has value, especially if you are a large fan of the Castlevania series. If you have a Super Nintendo and don't have this game..... well, you're just missing out.

I have played a lot of video games over the course of my lifetime, and this one really brings me back......

A must-play from the snes good ol days...
Review created: 01/22/10

One of the best genre of side scrolling games ever. At a time when people and video game companies were very concerned with making the transition to 3D style games (during the mid to late 90's when we were all eager for the next generation of gaming graphics and style) the Castlevania series remained among the last to convert...and rightfully became one of the few elite side scrollers to be perfected before most series converted.

It should be considered to be worthy of being in the company of such classic snes titles as Super Metroid, Super Mario World, and Super Contra: The Alien War...which should all, in my opinion, be on any respectable gamer's all-time list.

The pinnacle of Castlevania excellence.... 19 years ago
Review created: 01/19/10

There were few things more cool than the unveiling of Super Castlevania IV for the SNES. The biggest and most noticeable improvement is in the gameplay aspect. First off, as Simon Belmont you can finally whip in all 8 directions. While this may seem trivial, but this little addition made the game very playable and much more user-friendly. Also, if you take a look at the original Castlevania games on the NES you can only whip in one direction. That made for very frustrating gameplay that could have you tearing your hair out.

Don't be fooled though, Super Castlevania IV is hard. It's a good thing this game utilizes a password system. This game if for no other reason should be praised for its gameplay, replayability, alternate paths, beautiful graphics and music. These features make it one of the best games on the SNES and definitely one of the very best in the Castlevania series. So what did they do with the games after this one? Yeah, they took out the 8-way whipping feature!! Konami... sometimes even you redefine what it means to suck.

A great title for the Super Nintendo.
Review created: 06/20/09

Castlevania 4 may just be one of the best old school platformers released on the Super Nintendo. With it's epic music and colorful graphics many gamers stood silent when first seeing this game in action, i know it was like that for me.

Finding hidden meat is back yet again and those dodgy jumps can really create a mess out of a good run. I have heard people complain about some of the jumping physics, saying it ruined the experience, but overall it can mastered easily and hell it's SUPER Castlevania!

4.0 out of 5 stars.

A classic that every snes fan should own!
Review created: 04/05/09

If you are a fan of the old NES castlevania, this should be an instant classic. Imagine being able to swing your whip in every direction, better graphics, and another series of relentless stages to battle through! Granted it's easier than the previous installments, but that in no way takes away from the game. It will still be a challenge, there are some tricky situations that will push your limits. The music! That is the real beauty, a great game with a great soundtrack to go along with it. Staying true to the castlevania name, every level you encounter has a great theme playing in the background. These songs are technical too, not just some cheesy background music. It sets the mood for the game, and without the gloomy minor, organ/bass guitar driven songs, castlevania would never be as enthralling as it is and has been. It really puts you in the game. Even if you've never played any castlevania game (God forbid), you will love this one. Unless you don't like a challenge, then you will probably just say it sucks cause it's too hard lol.

  Excellent Classic Castlevania
Review created: 12/08/08(updated 01/01/09)

Super Castlevania IV is a must have Super Nintendo game, and is one of the best in the series. Castlevania IV features the same gameplay as all of the previous games but adds some new features that make the game stand out from the other ones in the series. The first, and one of the most useful, new additions is the ability to swing your whip in any direction. You can also use your whip to swing across ledges. All of the classic sub-weapons are included which are very useful. There are also several hidden areas which reveal hearts, and other special items. Castlevania IV is relatively challenging and includes a password feature. The graphics look great and the game features some of the best music in the series.

Pros:
- Classic castlevania action
- Great music
- Unique and interesting levels

Cons:
- None

  An excellent edition
Review created: 07/09/08(updated 07/22/08)
by:

Super Castlevania IV was released on the SNES in '91, 17 years later, it's still just as awesome as it was then.

SC IV is a revamped version of the NES Cult Classic, "Castlevania"; detailing Simon Belmont's first epic journey through demon and ghoul infested forests, catacombs, towers, and dungeons in his quest to destroy Dracula and bring peace to Transylvania and Europe.

This is a classic platforming game, progression is very linear; the player advances by fighting through a few blocks full of monsters before finally reaching the stage boss and after defeating it, is allowed to the next stage. (A very simple password system allows players to resume where they left off in gameplay.)

Primary form of attack is with the legendary Vampire Killer, a whip infused with alchemy and greatly effective against the undead. Items collected in the game can boost the power and length of the whip. The player also has access to a variety of sub weapons, such as: The dagger, axe, holy water, magical boomerang, and a stop watch which freezes enemies for a few seconds. A few things that sets this apart from Castlevania games at the time, (and even some today) is the ability to swing the whip in eight directions, attack downward and at an angle while in the air, and being able to swing across pits and other obstacles.

The graphics are simply gorgeous for the SNES and the game makes excellent use of Mode 7. (Allowing of the background to be rotated and scaled, giving the player pseudo 3-dimensional graphics. A wonderful feature used to great effect in many of the stages.) The details on many of the enemies (and Simon himself) are really great, especially many of the spirit-type-enemies.

Music is an important part to most any game and this score certainly delivers. Quite a few of the songs are original pieces for this game, but there is also several remixes of classic songs from the original Castlevanias. Not one bit of the score is out of place, each song compliments its given area and really sets the mood.

A truly great game, recommended for any gamer, and an excellent addition to the SNES Library.
