2112 is archetypal high-concept heavy/art-rock, featuring an interconnected suite of songs and a futuristic science fiction-inspired lyrical theme (courtesy of drummer/sole lyricist Neil Peart). When it came to '70s sci fi rock epics these guys were capable of giving Hawkwind and Jefferson Starship a run for their money. The first half of the album features "2112" proper, a series of interrelated tunes that paint a portrait of a 1984/Brave New World-style future, where music and emotion are outlawed. Ultimately, our hero discovers a guitar and uses it to fight the powers that be, all to the accompaniment of vaguely Led Zeppelin-derived heavy rock riffs and daunting time signatures. The final five tunes are unrelated to the concept piece but continue in a similar musical vein, though a little balladry is mixed in towards the end.

Plain and simply put. You have not OFFICALLY become a RUSH fan until you have heard this album. The first track on the album is called 2112. It is an amazing journey/story about the discovery of music with more emphasis on the guitar. If you are a drummer, it will please you to know that some of Neil Pearts' best work is on this album. ABSOLUTELY MIND BLOWING! The solos are endless. Geddy Lee (in my opinion) is the greatest bass player to ever live. Geddys work on this album is simply remarkable. Alex Lifeson, I feel is one of the most under rated guitarists there is. Alex truly exposes the many different sides of his talents on this album. The man can play GREAT melodic acoustics as well as ROCK when it is time to ROCK. As far as lyrics are concerned, Neil Peart writes all the lyrics on this masterpiece. He has a way of just taking you to another place with his writing. You can EASILY imagine yourself being in the place that RUSH is musically conveying. This album is more than just great music. It is a little vacation. Listen to A PASSAGE TO BANGKOK and THE TWILIGHT ZONE. You will be blown away! I personally LOVE every single second of this album. It would be hard to pick a favorite song. The energy from 2112 is addicting. You will NEVER get enough! The melodics are hypnotizing. It is truly a FANTASTIC album. I would recommend it to anyone who likes rock music to have variety and extraordinary talent mixed together. Enjoy! And RUSH, by and large, are amongst the best live shows of over 80 bands I have seen perform live. They played 2112 in its entirety during their 30th Anniversary Tour. IT ABSOLUTELY ROCKED!!! A DAMN GOOD THREE HOUR SHOW!!! GO SEE IT!!!

I'm old enough to have purchased this album when it first came out in the mid-1970s. I'd never heard of Rush before that. After listening, I was converted into a Rush fan. This is their best early album, and perhaps the last album they did without the use of all those synthesizers. It also seems to be their "break though" album. The two or three albums before this went generally unnoticed. Shortly after its release, I saw them in concert (they were still playing small venues at the time), and they performed almost the entire album.
