Not 2001: but less portentous and more... fun!

This movie although somewhat dated now, is in many ways a rather satisfying sequel to its landmark predecessor of a film from nearly two decades before, although its tone and focus are totally different.
It's not perfect however as it doesn't reach far enough ahead into the future (set 9 years after the original) technologically as the first one did, and relies on a VERY 1980s view of the future. It's an entertaining and suspenseful film with good performances and an optimistic tone, But whatever you do, don't buy it expecting the same tone, direction, intensity and ascetic atmosphere of 2001. One detail worth noting is the precision and exactitude with which the sets and models of the original Discovery ship are faithfully reproduced (or were those sets in storage all that time?).
Excellent casting features John Lithgow (Third Rock from The Sun et al) and gives you a chance to see Keir Dullea looking almost exactly as he did in the original (he must have a portrait of himself hanging on a wall at his home that is aging terribly!).
You can also see a great, tense performance by recent Oscar winner Helen Mirren, in her younger years, and speaking flawless Russian (many people don't know that Ms. Mirren is in fact the child of Russian parents who emigrated to the UK - which explains her facility with Russian dialogue) and of course the late Roy Scheider (of Jaws and Fosse fame) as the film's hero puts in a very competent performance.
Overall, for SF fans, a good way to see what Arthur C. Clarke had in mind for a resolution to the story of those mysterious monoliths. Also, the quality of the DVD (provided you do not get a bootleg version) is excellent.
