I bought this movie primarily so my kids could see it. I was horrified to find out that the employee in Blockbuster didn't even know what 2001 was. I couldn't imagine and world in which a person entrusted to help me with my videos was perplexed by a classic!!! Who can forget HAL? The claustrophobic feeling of trying to hide from the omnipresent , malevolent HAL, deep in space, cut off, silence so thick it covers every gleaming surface? This is a horror film with no gimmicks, no cheap thrills and no boogey man. A masterpiece that everyone should know about. And the opening is a classic that I was sure people in the jungles of Borneo knew about. When you get a great script and a great director, it's hard to screw up a film and 2001 proves that in every frame. If you haven't seen this film, you haven't really thought about what life would be like if your artificial intelligence-driven world were to take a left turn on you and start thinking for itself. It's even scarier today then it was when it came out, more powerful, more visceral and more contemporary. Not many films you can say that about, except maybe Dr. Strangelove. Oh yeah, I think I remember that director too!!

A Must See for every Sc-Fi Fan

I saw this movie when it was first shown in the local theater in 1968. Stanley Kubrick brought out the best in Arthur C. Clarke when they worked together to make this movie.

When it was released it so far advanced technologically that many people hated the movie. However true Sci-Fi fans loved it.

The way Clarke brought space to life in this movie was years ahead of it's time. You have to remember that in 1968 only a hand full of humans had ever even been in space, let alone established colonies or built ships large enough for anyone to live in.

2001 is one of the best space movies ever made and I highly recommend all Sci-Fi fans to add this one to their collection.

Way cool movie that was years ahead of its time in so many aspects. Its very interesting to see how Kubrick forcasted the future with space travel and computers. HAL was definately a very interesting character. Its a movie that you have to pay very close attention to throughout --- a "thinking" person's movie. We all enjoyed it very much and agree that this movie is a "must-see" for all science fiction fans.

Uh, I have always wanted to see this movie. However, that was in the 70's.
If I got High, I mean real High. NOT DRUNK. I would have most definitely have liked this. Almost as much as the Pink Floyd laser light show
I saw a GOOD while ago.
Thanks for listening. Peace and Flower Power my buds….

Either, you will love it, or you will hate it. I, personally love it. I saw it, originally, in 70MM wide screen and was awestruck. It, also, plays tremendously well on my big plasma screen TV. Stanley Kubrick is one of my favorite directors and I had to add this to my collection. This is a wonderful edition and well worth your time.

  2001: A Space Odyssey (2001, DVD)
Review created: 02/01/09

It was a thrill to watch this movie again. It just seems sad that people have spent so much money here killing each other instead of using time and energy to build such wonderful and imaginative machines for space exploration as portrayed in this movie. It is still a great movie after all these years.

  2001: A Space Odyssey

2001: A Space Odyssey is a masterpiece. It's slow movieing plot mesmorizes the audiance with outstanding visuals and specal effects, while portraying subextualy, and almost subliminaly, the progression of man kind through time and space. It captures the dark silent abiss of the unknown universe beautifly, and sends the audiance on a psycadellic, almost spiritual trip. One of the greatist films of all time.

  2001 Space Odyssey DVD
Review created: 05/30/08

I remember seeing this movie in 1968 at the Windsor Cinerama theater in Houston Texas. It was quite an experience for me because I had no idea what the movie was like before I sat down in the theater. I have owned a VHS copy of it for several years, and wanted to upgrade to a DVD. After watching it this week, I am so glad I did. The digital version is really sharp, the sound is impressive and I thoroughly enjoyed reliving the experience. Plus, since there has been so much written and discussed about the film and Kubrick's intention and meaning, I paid close attention to some of the scenes. If you have any affection for this film, by all means get the DVD and enjoy the film on the biggest screen you have available.

2001 to 2008...some of it is already reality
Review created: 05/15/08

While we are not taking a bus to the moon yet (but we will soon if Richard Branson has anything to do with it!), we do have videophone technology and computers that almost read our minds (but not our lips). If you watched this
when it first came out you will readily appreciate the progress we have made and the shortcomings we must live with. And as we learned from Hal 9000, don't push it too far or you will be unplugged! LOL! classic, incredible and mind boggling! My God, it's full of stars!!!!!

I like this movie about an highly intelligent computer named HAL.
But what I don't like about it is that there are alot of lenghy details on what they seeing, and what they're doing. It is very interesting.

This is a great DVD. I wish there were more special features on it, like how the movie was made, etc. I only had it on VHS tape before. The price is good, too.

  Best Sci-Fi movie ever!
Review created: 04/08/08(updated 05/27/08)
by:

Saw the movie when it came out in the late '60.
Was floored by it's special effects and story line.
Had to read the book, which came out AFTER the movie,
in order to fully grasp what Clarke was driving at.
Before computer imageries, this one puts them all to shame.
Ever smart computer on board the space station is the star.
Hall 9000is its name.
The acting is besides the point.
The story is what matters.
Humanity reaches the moon, and the great mind that created
everything becomes aware that we are ready to reach the stars.
Hall 9000, the on board computer is the star.
The point is, we should not trust computers, as well as we
should not trust what we think we know is for real.
Best Sci-Fi ever, by hundred billion miles!

Science Fiction's greatest masterpiece. Video phones? Supercomputers with hubris? Kubrick must have had a time machine. And HAL, what a great villain. "I will not be ignored.....???"
