Album Notes Personnel: Prince, Rosie Gaines (vocals); Doug E. Fresh (rap); Rosario Dawson (spoken vocals); Larry Graham; The Revolution; The New Power Generation. Recorded at Paisley Park, Minneapolis, Minnesota. The artist formerly known as Prince rings in--and rings out--the last year of this particular millennium with seven versions/mixes of the song that goes: "we're gonna party like it's 1999!" Each track presents a different take on the tune: stripped down and rebuilt, reflecting some of the many styles shaping contemporary pop/dance music: hip-hop, dub, drum and bass remixology, techno, even acapella (reflecting a bit of gospel influence). All the technology doesn't supplant soulfulness, though: the vocals of Larry Graham, Rosie Gaines and the Artist shine over, under, sideways, down, throughout. For fans of Prince and/or remixology, this release is a fine kiss-off to a year.
