A great movie that followed the book

I see that the review written about this movie have nothing to do with the movie.
This has to be one of the greatest book to movie's ever made.
George Orwell wrote this book while he was dying in a t.b. hospital
you can see the undercurrent of this in the movie.
William Hurt's performance was brilliant and to have the great Richard Burton co star this movie will not disappoint any of the readers of the book.
The dvd is out of print and it is worth buying it is a classic.

Excellent movie and story despite the similarities in todays society. One of the reasons for America moving away from being a free country to a heavily socialistic country is the growing ignorance of it's inhabitants. It's gone so far into socialism that the average American will claim that he/she doesn't want socialism, while at the same time they rely on a government program which really represents theft of someone to redistribute to someone else.
If you ask the average American what the underlying principle of socialism is, he/she will either try to look it up in an online dictionary or mouth something that's similar to "government owned", never addressing the question. The fact is that the underlying principle of socialism is force. That is what holds the ideology together as if it were up to you to "volunteer" up to half your income, or if you like, work twice as long in your life as you should have to because of the theft, you would never agree to such a thing as you would not willingly reduce your life, and the life of your Wife, Parents, Siblings, Children, Friends and other relatives to that of a slave. But you probably support either an obama or mcclain even though those politicians are doing precisely the kind of lying and theft that you claim you would not voluntarily support. So what needed to be done is dumb you down. Make you so ignorant that you A) cannot even define the differences in socialism and freedom, and B) make you think that you are free while in fact you work twice as long as you should have to in order to support the governments plans for you. Then of course you need to be "patriotic" and since you cannot define the differences between socialism and freedom, it's a pretty simple thing for the government funded schools to teach you what patriotism is. It's hardly patriotism but you think it is and that's all that matters.
Hence you'll see in this movie the confusion of language, ie: freedom is slavery, ignorance is bliss, war is peace, etc.
Another movie along similar lines but with more of an American twist to it, that I highly recommend is Harrison Bergeron.
Enjoy comrade and long live big brother!

$51 for a bootleg DVD, Be Fair Warned

This exchange was a complete disaster! The seller sold me a bootleg copy of what was supposed to be a rare, oop copy of "1984" for $51.

It took him 11 days and my filing a complaint with paypal for him to ship it.

Wouldn't you know, when it finally arrived it was a BOOTLEG!!!! I never could get my money back from him, because after your initial claim is remedied, they don't let you file another or modify it. I question how often I will use ebay again. While I am sure that I will, I know it won't be as often!

Very well done movie adaptation of the Orwell novel. Atmosphere closely mirrors that of the novel. Be aware, however, that the format of the disk is European, and thus might not be easy to play on DVD players in the USA.

  Hold on to this one!

For a politically minded person, it's interesting when people are able to predict the future through a movie. Orson Wells in my opinion has predicted through this well written story, the path that America has begun to take. It serves also as a warning, showing us how bad things would be if we ever gave up our constitutional rights. James Madison, who helped write our constitution said: "If Tyranny and Oppression come to this land, it will be in the guise of fighting a foreign enemy" His words are also prophetic. This movie is a must see in the sense that people make subtle references to it all the time. 1984, is by virtue of it's message politically incorrect, which proves how important it is to see, and explains why it is now,so hard to find. I bought a "region 2" disc and used an old DVD-ROM on my pc, which you can switch to that region - perfect for foreign DVD's. Once you convert a DVD-ROM to region 2, you might as well keep it there so you can watch other region 2 discs. the switch is easy.
This movie is a must see, and standing on its own, it is entertaining no matter how much or how little is read into it.
There is nothing else like it, I promise you that!

Terrible ebayer and bully want-to-be.

Sticks Fairly Close To The Book

The book 1984 by George Orwell is probably the most important book ever written. Very few movies ever capture the scope and feel of a book perfectly but this one does a fair job and it's certainly a great way to introduce your friends to the concepts and terms of 1984. Wake Up America! 1984 is here.

I love this story because it reminds me of what is happening in America. You see things happening like modifying the news before it gets to the readers. I believe that has happened, for example, Cheney's release of an "important document" to a reporter from the Washington Post then he is upset at it's release. Bull$#!t. The more you read (or watch) you can't help but compare to our very own Big Brother.

I liked it because it was Richard Burton, a fellow Welshman. I liked the movie but dislike how close our society is to what is portrayed in this movie. I bought it as a time capsule for my chilren and grandchildren's generations, in the hope that they will also have the luxury to watch 1984 in freedon as we do. If not, the movie could have become a reality espeially if we stay the course we are on.

Orwell's 1984 with John Hurt and Richard Burton
Review created: 11/23/08

This is a very faithful adaptation of the book as far as it goes. The oppressive, dreary, monotone darkness of Oceania is palpable, as are Winston's emotional swings from dull resignation to vague unfocused rumblings of revolt, to abject terror.

The problem is that the movie is just too short and moves too fast. There is insufficient plot and character development for the viewer to really establish a connection with Winston and his mindset, or to truly appreciate the depth of oppression party members experience in Oceania - right down to continually re-writing history and eviscerating the language in efforts to make "thoughtcrime" impossible. Viewers who have read the book recently will have no problem following the movie, but will likely come away feeling that somehow the movie "missed" something. Viewers who read the book years ago will come away feeling that the movie must have left something out altogether. Viewers who have not read (and appreciated) the book will find it pretty rough going.

Nonetheless, for true fans of the book, the movie provides a very satisfying visualization of Orwell's story.

  Accurate and powerful rendering
Review created: 07/16/08

Merely a few days after finishing my read of George Orwell's fantastic 1948 novel "Nineteen Eighty-Four", I was immediately keen on looking to rent the modern film version, "1984" - filmed, appropriately enough, not only during the actual YEAR of 1984, but also during the exact same short span of months that the story took place in. This, to me, is a prime example of perfect, and unbelievably well-timed, brilliance. A picture based on such complex, prophetic, and well-known material could have turned out to be a complete disaster (which it certainly had potential for, judging from the horrendous-looking DVD cover); thankfully, however, I was not disappointed.

"1984" is probably one of the most, if not THE most, masterful transitions from book to movie I have ever seen. Easily, its most impressive aspect was its phenomenal accuracy, attention to detail, etc. In other words, this film was FAITHFUL, in every sense of the word, to its source material. One can't give such a statement about films these days.

Amazing casting, terrific musical score, and mind-blowing sets, cinematography, and direction, "1984" is surely a unique treasure, and one that still retains the same timeless messages even decades since its release.

It is also noteworthy that the lesser known 1956 version of Nineteen Eighty-Four (Directed by Michael Anderson and staring Edmond O'Brien) is also available. This version was well-cast, and the art direction was also competent. Edmund O'Brien turned in a great performance as Winston Smith. I think that he brought a great quality of desperation to the role; which seemed to run contrary to John Hurt's performance.

Additionally, some of you may (or may not) be happy to know that there are plans for a 2009 remake of 1984, but not much is known about it other than a short blurb on imbd.

I showed my high school students this video after they read the book. All of them were over 17 years old. Too much nudity. I had one female student get up and ran out of the room. I would NOT recommend this movie.

The movie 1984 is a good adaptation of Orwell's book. Great acting, especially by Hurt, although it is highly recommended that one read the book first. I would have not had a very thorough understanding of the movie otherwise.
