1984 by Erich (AFT) Fromm, George Orwell (1990, Paperback, Reissue)

I first picked up 1984 about 10 years ago when I was about 13 and since than it has always gripped and terrorised by it. Many other great books have come and gone in my collection but Orwell’s nightmare vision of a future is a book that you will read more than once.

I will only give you details of world Orwell creates rather than the story that unfolds in this dystopia.

Writing in the early forties, Orwell envisions a world where every action is monitored or controlled in some form by an entity known as "Big Brother" and the political elite. TV sets for instance have a two way view, so you’re not just watching TV it’s watching you. London has become a city monitored on every level; by even thinking that you are "free" you are guilty of a "thought crime"

I am trying to keep this review short and sweet due to me being in work as I write this.

When you finish 1984, do not be surprised that you have now smashed your TV, cut your phone line, set fire to your computer and every time you walk down a busy street you keep looking for security cameras. I am not trying to spoof you here but you will be more paranoid or at least be more personal information security aware.

Some commentators have pointed out that Orwell had a unique view of the future, while others argue that his view was most close than most of the early science fiction writers.

Anyway, read 1984, make your own mind up.

Brilliant Book

It seems to be the way our country is heading now so I thought that i should read up.

The new paintings of the president look the way I see the pictures of big brother in my head.

A book well deserved of being called a classic. I chose to read it as an english project. It was interesting and made me think about things i normally would not. Good for all ages as well because orwell uses his themes and teaches us about life in society today as well as when he wrote the book.

I had heard about this book before, but I had no idea how intriguing it really was. It is one of the best books I have ever read, and I have read a lot of books. From the first word you are immediately in captured and cannot put the book down. I found it so interesting to see George Orwell's interpretation of what the future would be like. I would have no hesitation to buy this book a million times.

Eric Arthur Blair, known to us as George Orwell, led a life which certainly gave him the authority to write such a book as 1984. His political views show us a man who was adaptive and intelligent, and most assuredly a realist. 1984 is a cold dark world in which hope is dead and all fall under the eye of big brother. I'm sure if Orwell could percieve today's world, it's realization by him would only serve to raise his eyebrow and perhaps an "I suspected as much". Today Orwell's work is as relative as ever, indeed, I believe the book was written FOR the future world. Today revolutionary patriotism is alive and well with many leaders such as Alex Jones, Daniel Estulin, Michael Badnarik, Peter Dale Scott, Mark Dice, and innumerous others. I only hope the readers of Orwell's 1984 come to understand that his vision is one we live in today. Please read this book and awaken to the Truth Movement of the 21st Century before I am taken to a FEMA Camp and big brother fits you with an implant.

I heard about this book from a friend and decided to read it. Great book, very interesting. I would recommend reading it.

This book is an absolute classic. I loved it when I read it in high school and wanted my own copy. This book points to the importance of personal freedom and how close we are to losing it.

The best thing I liked about this book was the rich language used. Orwell probably didn't intend for this book to be philosophical, but it had some good quotes on it.
One thing I loved about this book was the way Orwell described things. His creations are able to come to life. It made me feel like I was living the book. I think this book is impossible to make into a movie, because each individual person has different thoughts about it and different views.
Something I disliked about this book was the length and the way Orwell sometimes went off topic on some points. He would be talking about the government, and then he would somehow link it to a group of people called proles. Despite this setback, I found the book quite interesting. I bought another book called "A Tale of Two Cites" by Charles Dickens, and I found "1984" to be better.
I bought this book for my son, who is going to high school. He has to read the book over the summer for high school. He found it quite good, and this review is what he thought about it.

Even though the time has come and gone, this book still has that ominous effect on readers as it did in the 40's. The prediction of what would happen in 1984, in the time it was made, caused almost cataclysmic effects. The book remains a great reader today.

Yes, it's true. This probably is the most important book ever written. The impact this book has had on language, culture, and freedom is huge. Terms like Big Brother and Thought Police and doublethink all trace their roots back to this book.

If one were to read this book with the evening news in mind they would realize that it's not much of a stretch to say that this book is in many ways prophetic. You cannot walk in England without government cameras following your movement. The USA is headed in that direction and the average joe is more than willing to give up freedom for "Safety". And what about the saying "War Is Peace" Kind of sounds like what our leaders are telling us now. "Freedom Is Slavery" and "Ignorance Is Strength" also sound eeriely familier.

1984 has been an all time favorite of mine since I was a child. I love it because it's one of those books you can read 100 times and still enjoy just as much as the first (if not more!)

Required reading in high school 30 years ago, still often required... Great prediction of future now happening... Had a heck of time winning it on ebay for my son.... Obviously still very popular....

I'm really glad I saw this book in my ma's house and decided to grab it for a vacation. It was a great summer read and it kept me intrigued the whole time.

It was not the same cover of the book as pictured. It was in good condition, no highlighting marks, no bends. Like new.

I needed to buy this item for school. I decided to buy it because i was looking for a cheaper price and this item met my critiria.

Great book, needed it for school. Written as a negative-utopia, and reveals some of the errors in today's society. Makes you think as you read it.

I never received this item, and all of my emails to the sender were ignored. The money obviously is not the issue, as it wasn't much money. However, the point is that I just threw that money away - and I really wanted the book.

I bought this book for my daughter, and when it was delivered it turned out to be some type of teachers lecture book. We were very disappointed.
