Yes, it's true. This probably is the most important book ever written. The impact this book has had on language, culture, and freedom is huge. Terms like Big Brother and Thought Police and doublethink all trace their roots back to this book.
If one were to read this book with the evening news in mind they would realize that it's not much of a stretch to say that this book is in many ways prophetic. You cannot walk in England without government cameras following your movement. The USA is headed in that direction and the average joe is more than willing to give up freedom for "Safety". And what about the saying "War Is Peace" Kind of sounds like what our leaders are telling us now. "Freedom Is Slavery" and "Ignorance Is Strength" also sound eeriely familier.

This book goes into depth on how Language is crucial to our survival and making up words is destroying our society; simple terms: making society stupid. The book is really great but the ending killed the mood of the book.

The book is a little bit too "used" but still in OK condition for reading. I ordered this for my son's summer reading project. Retrospectively, I could have got a much better copy from Craigslist.com or somewhere else. Got the book within the "time".
