Winston Smith lives in a vast, disturbing place called Oceania, where Big Brother is always watching you, and the Thought Police are always on the lookout for people whose thoughts betray the Party. Oceania is always at war with one of the other two countries, Eurasia and Eastasia. Winston works for the Ministry of Truth, where they are constantly correcting the records to match the events that are occurring within Oceania.

It was a very interesting read. At first, it is slow going, but give it a while (a couple of chapters) and it will be difficult to put down. I decided to read it for a literature class, and it was well worth it.

While having a conversation about 6 or 8 months ago, the term "big brother' came up. I remember it came from Orwell's book which I had read in highschool and I wanted to reread it. Even though the book was written 60 years ago, it is still as intriguing as ever.

I bought the book for a Sociology Class. I'm starting to read it now.
I like the fact that the book was delivered in less than a week.
I did not expect the pages to be so yellow. I'm afraid the pages will fall out if I bend the book.

  Important Book
Review created: 05/08/07

Yes, it's true. This probably is the most important book ever written. The impact this book has had on language, culture, and freedom is huge. Terms like Big Brother and Thought Police and doublethink all trace their roots back to this book.

If one were to read this book with the evening news in mind they would realize that it's not much of a stretch to say that this book is in many ways prophetic. You cannot walk in England without government cameras following your movement. The USA is headed in that direction and the average joe is more than willing to give up freedom for "Safety". And what about the saying "War Is Peace" Kind of sounds like what our leaders are telling us now. "Freedom Is Slavery" and "Ignorance Is Strength" also sound eeriely familier.

This is a MUST READ. 5 Huge Stars
