  THE BEATLES 1967-1970

It took three years after the break up of the Beatles for Apple Records to finally come out with a greatest hits package, and this The BEATLES 1967-1970 was by far the greatest collection of hits by the Beatles in the second volume of a two record set. It explored the studio years behind the Beatles music after the hectic tours earlier in the careers of the Fab Four. From their classic Sargent Pepper's album to the strange adventures of Magical Mystery Tour film and beyond.
The "solo" Beatles performances of the White Album right up until the very end with Abbey Road that was their true last album together in the studio as a band.
Let it Be was the album that marked the end of a musical era as the 1960's came to a close. This double "greatest hits" package has been dubbed the "blue album" by most Beatles fans. With classic hits such as All You Need is Love to Hey Jude was a sample of some of the 20 No. 1 best selling singles by the Fab Four to the album cuts such as the Day in the Life ( from Sgt Pepper) to While My Guitar Gentle Weeps (from The White Album), This later greatest hits package covers it all!

One of the greatest contributions to popular music.....

Spanning the Beatles' career from its glorious high-water mark to its bitter and plaintive end, this CD is perhaps the most essential item for any pop/rock collection.

Listen to the first few songs especially, and be prepared to be blown away, especially if you are not overly familiar with the group's work.

It starts with their first psychadelic single, "Strawberry Field Forever" (plus its double A-side, "Penny Lane"). Can you imagine a group today releasing a single with two such timeless and monumental songs on the same disc? It is questionable whether such a record will ever be released again. It's just a shame the British public didn't know what was good for them, instead keeping the Beatles off the No 1 spot in favour of Engelbert Humperdink's "Release Me"!

Next comes the first three songs from "Sgt Pepper", then "A Day in the Life", a song which totally transcends the pop or rock idiom, whilst avoiding pretentiousness or pomp. Follow this with "All You Need Is Love" and "I Am the Walrus", and you begin to see just how amazing the start of this record is. Each one of these songs is better than the best songs ever written by nearly every other group, and they're all here in sequence.

Inevitably things go slightly downhill from there on in, although still well worth the 5 star rating. There is "Lady Madonna", "Hey Jude", "Revolution" and many another such classic.

It is questionable why the compilers sought to add numbers such as "Old Brown Shoe" or "Octopus' Garden" - hardly amongst the group's best output. However, the quality rises again with the later more mature and less psychadelic songs, such as "Something" and "Let It Be".

The big omission from the Red and Blue albums is anything from "Revolver" (they only feature the "Eleanor Rigby/Yellow Submarine" single). Also, some fans would have preferred "Blackbird" to "Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da". But minor quibbles apart, this CD is more than entertainment - it's a musical education. Almost every group since this work was released has drawn on it in some shape or form......................

One of the BETTER Beatles cd I've heard
Review created: 06/01/06

I purchased the cd 1967-1970 (Blue Album) - The Beatles for my husband. He was helping my daughter work on a history project and The Beatles was one of the topics she needed to research. She, being only 16, had no idea who the Beatles were and why they were so important in history. The research led us to talking about our favorite Beatles songs and that gave me the idea of trying to purchase atleast one cd for him. Its an awesome cd and most of their hits are on this. Well worth the effort it took to find it on eBay and the price I paid.

  Beatles 1967-1970(Blue Album)
Review created: 06/11/09

Fabulous collection of as many great Beatles songs(14)that can fit on a 2-record set. Yes, record. This collection came out on vinyl in the mid-70's, and with the red(1962-1966)set make as good a group of Beatles' hits as you'll find. It goes from Sgt. Pepper to the end in 1970. When you listen to the red & blue sets in order, the progression of their development really flows, impressing one with how much they grew and matured over those eight years, taking modern music along with them.
One small complaint. The included lyrics are reduced in size proportional to reducing the album cover to CD size and are quite hard to read.

The Red and Blue albums were my introduction to the Beatles as a kid. Today I have all of their releases from Help to Hey Jude, but I longed to listen to the Blue Album again. I love the song selection and order.

The BEATLES blue album (on CD)
Review created: 08/03/08
by:

I bought the CD because my teenage daughter has been 'discovering' the Beatles and wanted to have some of the songs that were in the Blue Album. Ok, I'm an indulgent father. She recently was graduated from high school, does not use drugs or tobacco, and is a really fine young lady. Ok, I'm not real comfortable with the tatoos on her current boyfriend but over all, she's a good kid and popping for an album of classic Beatles probably won't push her over the edge.

What is amazing about the Beatles is the quality of the song writing. Where are the 'pop culture' composers of today that consistently turn out new tunes that not only intrigue the ear but will withstand the test of time? Answer: the world is sorely lacking such creative individuals. The evolution of the art into Rap may be seen as a boost for poetry but in reality has only given rise to a generation of performers that have gained fame and fortune with considerably less talent than was required in the past. The Beatles set a high standard in song writing and it is good for today's youth to spend a little time with their work.

Nothing to be blue about here.
Review created: 06/12/08

The Beatles greatest hits from 1967-1970. These have got to be some of the greatest songs ever written for the popular music genre. I owned this as a 2-disc record album back in the early 80's. It was great then and it is still great now. Having refined their musical talents through the years, these are a collection of some of the best songs made before their break-up. Not as pop as many of their early efforts, but more of an extension into their own musical ability and lyrical meaning. I have been looking for this 2-disc set used for a long time, but never have been able to find it for a decent price. A testiment to the albums longevity, nobody ever wants to get rid of it. And you won't either.

I decided to buy this CD after watching Across the Universe.

The Good:
The songs are some of the greatest of the era. If you like the Beatles, to any degree, I would recommend this compilation.

The Bad:
There aren't more songs. If you have some favorites that are not really well known, they won't be here.

It's the Beatles.. what else is there?
Review created: 06/04/07(updated 08/30/07)

Although not the greatest Beatles release ever, the "Blue" Album does a great job of capturing a snap shot of 1967-1970 in the Beatles career. The inclusion of "Revolution" goes a long way to make this album excellent. Also, Ringo's only vocal of note on "With a Little Help From my Friends" and Lennon's dreamy tone on "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" elevate this CD into greatness.

Being born and bred in Liverpool, I admit that I am biased. If it was up to me, you'd buy every Beatles track ever produced. However, for those with only a passing interest in the Beatles, buy the Blue and Red Albums to capture most of those "radio sing-along" tracks you never got around to buying. For the Bealtes purist... look elsewhere.

This along with the red album(Beatles 62' to 66') are wonderful samplings of the tremendous body of work by the Beatles. This one is from the later years of The Beatles and contains some of thier best songs, including selections from many of Rolling Stone magazine's 500 Greatest Albums.

I loved the Beatles. I had purchased the album recenty in an antique store and had wanted to get it on CD. I was so surprised when I found it on e-bay. I bought it and was just delighted with it. I am in my fifties and I remember the Beatles as if they had only started playing yesterday. Thank you E-BAY for bringing back memories.
