Album Notes
This best-of captures the master alto saxophonist Johnny Hodges in one of his few extended forays outside the Duke Ellington band. He's accompanied by a young John Coltrane, among others, on a selection of original compositions, standards, and interpretations of Duke Ellington classics like the gospel-based "Come Sunday," the jaunty "I Let a Song Go Out of My Heart," and the lyrical ballad "I Got It Bad and That Ain't Good." Hodges' playing is at its most graceful on the slower numbers, but he negotiates standards like "The Sheik of Araby" and "On the Sunny Side of the Street" with equal aplomb.
