A *must have* movie you'll never forget...

One of the best things about this movie is the sheer unexpected delight of it. It's a musical that doesn't "watch" like a musical; it's a love story that's too clever and bawdy to be dismissed as a "chick flick". It's a historical piece chock-full of accurate quotes (though it does take creative license on some factual details). You will laugh yourself to tears.

This movie contains some of my all-time favorite lines and scenes, not the least of which is William Daniels' performance as the "obnoxious and disliked" John Adams. Howard DaSilva is brilliant as Dr. Benjamin Franklin ("Don't worry, John. The history books will clean it up.").

I first watched this movie with my dad when I was a little. I thought then I would hate it, but loved it. Ever since, I have relished watching the same reaction in everyone who has watched it with me as they go from not being interested in seeing it to counting it among their favorite movies. Any age. Male or female. This movie will give you a thought-provoking and thoroughly entertaining glimpse at the most significant turning point in US history -- when we became The United States of America.

I have always liked this movie. The music is fantastic, the story is great, and the casting, in my opinion, could not have been better. The theme of course is the events leading up to the signing of the Declaration of Independence. While you know what happens at the end of the movie, you get a view of the events that are interesting. Especially is the discussion of slavery. The personalities of these men were explored perfectly. The letters that are read occasionally throughout the movie add a touch of what was happening while the politicians set away from all the action discussing the points that would lend themselves to our great document.
Being a student of history I find it interesting to know what happened to almost every man who signed the Declaration.
A great movie, great music, and a great theme.

The truth is that, although the movie does take little liberties with the history, 1776 is a great movie. It makes you think and makes you realize how hard fought our independence was. I love this film because it shows you that the Founding Fathers were, above all else, humans. The reality factor is just one reason why I bought this film.
The music is lovely and clever (The Egg), timely (Piddle, Twiddle and Resolve) and lively (He Plays the Violin). The film is family-friendly (for the most part) and great for beginning lessons on the beginning of this country. I highly recommend it for anyone who loves musicals and historical films!

A different slant on America's forefathers
Review created: 08/10/09

I got this for my Mom. She saw it on the TV and loved it. It is a musical situated around the signing of the Declaration of Independence. There are moments of humor through it. As I said. My Mom loved it. I feel though it is well done, and packed with notable celebrities, it isn't my cup of tea. That is not to say it is bad, just not my thing.
If a lighter hearted look at the history of America is what you are after this may well fill the bill. It shows the many different personalities that fromed our beginnings. How accurate I do not know. Dan
By the way, My mom is 83, but you didn't hear it from me.

  1776 DVD, Director's Cut
Review created: 06/12/09

I bought this for my son who had a VCR of the regular version, not the director's cut. He just loves this one and said that the extra information being that it is the director's cut was absolutely fantastic. There were so many interesting things. He really loved this version plus the colors were a remake and much better than the VCR tape he had.

  1776 DVD DIRECTOR'S CUT
Review created: 05/12/09

IT HELPS US TO CATCH A GLIMPSE OF WHAT THE FOUNDING FATHERS HAD TO DEL WITH IN A LIGHT HEARTED WAY. THERE ARE ALSO SOME VERY SERIOUS ISSUES TO DEAL WITH AND SOME HEART FELT SITUATIONS THAT THE CONGRESS HAD TO DEAL WITH.

I BOUGHT IT BECAUSE THE VERSION WHICH WAS SHOWN ON TELEVISION HAD MANY CUTS AND LOST MUCH OF THE MATERIAL WHICH GAVE THE FILM IT'S FLAVOR.

A Must Own for for musical lovers or history buffs
Review created: 02/21/09

This is what a great musical should look and sound like. Some of your favorite actors you never knew could sing;Ken White (White Shadow), William Daniels (St. Elsewhere), Blythe Danner ( too many things to mention). This production has it all, great scenery and costumes, terrific songs, humor and is probably more historically accurate than half the so called "serious" films available. You need to own it.

  Best Historical Musical I've Seen
Review created: 12/11/08
by:

This movie is an amazing look through our founding with a musical setting that works perfectly with the story. The acting is amazing with Mr. Feeney, the White Shadow, and the Govenor from Benson all in prominent roles. The songs are amazingly sung and well crafted. The only part I didnt like was that you could tell the writers inserted a political jab for its time (late 60's early 70's), as part of the storyline. Other than that its a very good buy.

Originally saw the stage production and had the videotape. Good, for a musical, presentation of how the 2nd Continental Congress debated "Independency."

Enjoyable, and children might find it an interesting way to learn some history.

Review created: 08/15/08

A great historical/musical presentation of the Continental Congress and the writing of the Declaration of Independance. Great casting. An awesome depiction of the trials and tribulations of the writing process, in addition to the personal side of the major signers of the Declaration. Fun humor too! Would recommend it be shown as a history lesson for today's youth.

I bought this as a gift for a friend. She was talking about it the other day and mentioned how much she likes it. As we were on the phone, I found it on Ebay and bought it without telling her! She was thrilled to receive it. This movie, based on the play, is a wonderful version of the early days of our Founding Fathers and how our country evolved. It would be a good history lesson for children as well.

  1776 the Musical
Review created: 07/12/08

I was never a fan of history, but if it were taught this way, I would have loved it. It is one of the best movies/musicals I have seen. I felt like I was there at the Continental COngress debating The U.S. freedom. It was humorous and informational. Loved the actors esp. John Adams, Ben Franklin, and Tom Jefferson. Definitely a teaching movie but very enjoyable. Music and costumes were great. Highly recommend watching this one.

If you caught the HBO presentation about John Adams recently...you will see a few things different with this movie adaptation of the making of our Declaration of Independence. There was no holding out with the Southern states with the wording of all men being created equal....in the movie they made those words disappear....with Franklin telling Adams that first they had to break from England..then others could handle the freedom of the slaves. In this uncut version of the movie..with the directors commentary included...telling you what scenes were deleted in the version made originally, and also some backround information regarding some of the actors. I loved this so much when I rented it, and had to have it for my own..to watch again whenever I wanted. It is long..so settle in...get the remote ready t o pause now and then..or go back to it another night..but you will not be disappointed.
