Fun Movie Where TV's 'Monk' Inherits A Spooky House

Tony Shaloub stars in this spooky tale of the price of inheritance. F. Murray Abraham also stars, playing the mad antagonist who struggles to gain immortality through a cunning capturing of souls, aided by his neurotic psychic assistant. 13 Ghosts has excellent horror movie production values and in reality, features the inherited glass-maze house as the star of the show.

Perhaps you've seen the excellent horror-thriller movie The Cube, where the cube continually shifts it's walls to bring forth new torments to its visitors. The house in 13 Ghosts is very much like this, with a some 'Scooby Do' quirky family antics thrown in. While this DVD certainly has appeal to kids from ages 9-14, parents should be aware that some of the featured ghoul scenes are gruesome and violent.

The combination of family antics mixed with ghouls can be off-putting to strict horror fans. I enjoyed this movie for it's special effects and spooky dead zombies coming to get me at every turn. I'd say definitely buy this DVD if you don't mind mixing genres. Not the best purchase for fans looking for a thrilling knuckle biting horror movie - try the Cube instead.

  One of William Castle's best!
Review created: 09/25/09

Whether you watch it with or without the gimmick "Ghost Viewer," William Castle's "13 Ghosts" (the original! and better than any possible remake!) is a lot of fun. I originally saw it on VHS, in its pan-and-scan version without the color ghost lens gimmick. It was a good-looking film and held up just fine. Why? Because it managed to be scary in a traditional way, but retained a playful sensibility that made it reasonably kid-friendly. It's right in the middle there, and delivers both chills and family-style laughs. Featuring a great cast including Martin Milner, Charles Herbert and Jo Morrow. A perfect film for Halloween or any old time of the year!

First of all I'd like to point out: don't confuse the reviews here of the newer version of this film with the older version. It seems ebay has mingled them both in one area for some odd reason. The older version in no way has any blood or gore. Graphic blood and gore had little abundance when the original 13 Ghosts was released to the public........

Great old flick that I viewed during its original release in theaters as a child. I remember the Illusion-O viewers but for some reason thought it was in 3-D which it isn't/wasn't. That is further explained in the William Castle Special Features portion of this DVD. Back then with all the Illusion-O hype, it was a flick that you just had to see.

Film is about a family that's down on their luck till the son makes a birthday wish that comes true. The father inherits a Munsters style mansion fully equipped with ghosts, flying meat cleavers and as an added treasure, the 'original' wicked witch of the West from Oz. Oh yea, let's not forget the pair of futuristic looking phantasma viewing glasses. Spooky events occur and the sinister plans of a greedy lawyer are foiled in the process.

Clearly a classic with its reminiscent 50's/60's style overacting and some funny moments as well. Good to see that some of the ebay price hax have lowered their prices on this flick so more people will most likely enjoy this old classic of yesteryear.

  Great title.
Review created: 03/29/09

This is an older black and white movie, not the newer version. This is one of my all time favorite scary movies. The witch from The Wizard of OZ is in it which makes it even better. It's about a family inheriting an old haunted house, but it's not so scary that you have to hide your eyes at times. It is definitely worth watching!!!

  13 Ghosts

I ordered this for my husband who was a big fan of the movie when he was a boy. He was thrilled, and even claims that our daughter enjoyed it! He far prefers it to the re-make of a few years ago.

It was a good ghost story, not horror, or bloody, just ghost. It was a nice family movie and my kids loved it.The ghost which we're a time violent, the old house keeper(Witch from Wizard Of Oz) was just as creepy and the good looking lawyer, was the bad boy! I really enjoyed it.

  The Original was better!
Review created: 01/27/07(updated 01/28/08)

As usual, Hollywood can not replicate the original. Although the newer version of 13 Ghosts was certainly MUCH better than remakes of some other classic horror movies (ie: The House on Haunted Hill) it still falls short of the dark atmospheric original.

This may sound like I am going to offer a review of the Tony Shaloub film, but i'm not. I'm reviewing one of my favorite spooky horror films, the original B&W version of 13 Ghosts.

By today's standards, the orginal 13 Ghosts may seem like a bit of a disappointment, but if your looking for a movie that will actually send a chill up your spine, this is it! It's a classic "Old Dark House" film. The special effects used for the Ghosts are dated & sometimes hard to see, but that just makes them spookier. The story is well thought out & moves along at a good pace. The actors are believable & the characters are not over done.

If you're looking for blood & guts or a film that relies entirely on it's special effects, this movie is not for you. But if you're looking for a film that'll give you the creeps after & make you apprehensive about walking into a dark room, this is the one for you! A sure 'get your girlfriend to jump on your lap' flick!

  13 Ghosts (orig.)
Review created: 10/03/06

I saw "13 Ghosts" when it first came out, and thought it was above average within the horror movie onslaught of the 50's. Of course, it's a kid's movie with all the devices of simple horror, and now I view it as such.
But, I'm a collector, and my array of nostalgia would not be complete without this "William Castle" offering.
Thanks Bill, wherever you are.
