A heartbreaking book you'll never forget--

White Oleander is one of those books you read that you never forget. In the book, Astrid (a thirteen-year-old) is sent to foster care after her mother is convicted of murder. The book follows Astrid through a string of foster homes (some good, some not so good)...and just when things seem to get better for her, the rug is pulled out again and the roller coaster ride starts again. I've had some experience working with kids in foster care, and I can say that some of what Astrid experiences is quite realistic. However, this book is so in-your-face real that it's heartbreaking at times. Fortunately, the book ends on an optimistic note, so there is hope for Astrid.
Equally engrossing is the depiction of this very disfunctional mother-daughter relationship. The mother is manipulative and selfish; Astrid suffers greatly as a result. An accurate depiction of mental illness, however...
Don't read this one if you're looking for an uplifting book. It is engrossing, though. I couldn't put it down. It was so emotionally taxing that I gulp every time I see the cover or hear someone talk about it. It's one of those reads you HAVE to do because it's so beautifully written.
