Album Notes 12 PICKS is a compilation featuring six tracks from Ace Frehley's solo albums and six previously-unreleased live tracks recorded at the Hammersmith Odeon, London, England in 1989. When the original lineup of Kiss (Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Ace Frehley, and Peter Criss) regrouped for 1996-1997's sold-out reunion tour, the demand for new product from the reinstated band was overwhelming. Sensing this, Megaforce-the record company that had released Frehley's '80s solo albums-decided that the time was perfect for a Frehley 'best of' collection, 12 PICKS. As a promotional stunt, the collection's first pressing contained a Frehley guitar pick, but the majority of the tunes actually stand up quite well on their own. Frehley's solo albums are spotty affairs. While each contains several hard rocking highlights, there is usually an equal amount of easily forgettable compositions. 12 PICKS corrects this problem by just featuring the very best of Frehley's material-such winners as "Into the Night," "Rock Soldiers," "Words are Not Enough," and "Insane." Kiss fans will want to check out 12 PICKS for its inclusion of several in-concert takes of make-up era favorites ("Rip it Out," "Cold Gin," "Shock Me," "Rocket Ride," "Deuce"). If you don't want to sift through Frehley's solo albums to find the standouts, simply check out 12 PICKS. A complementary collection, LOADED DECK, was released the following year.
Editorial Reviews ...like Kiss [12 PICKS] has a half-witty exuberance that almost wins you over. - Rating: B Entertainment Weekly (04/11/1997)
