12 HAUNTED EPISODES marks Graham Parker's debut for Razor & Tie records, one of his many stops in a turbulent career. Parker's history of stormy relationships with his record labels is merely a sidenote to his often furiously defiant music. There's irony in the fact that with this release, Parker is decidedly kinder and gentler. Passing through the gates of middle age gave the legendarily vitriolic singer a more accepting world-view.
The muted tones of the record suit this newfound peace (well, at least as close to peace as Parker's probably ever going to get). His pastoral mood envelopes "Partner for Life" and pulls heartstrings on "Fly." He dismisses his long-standing reputation as a man who possesses a serious attitude problem with a wave of the hand on the whimsically upbeat "Pollinate." This album makes it clear that a rocker can mellow and age without surrendering crucial elements of his art. By embracing his place in the world, Parker has circumvented the self-parody that saddles many middle-aged rockers who vainly ignore the passage of time.
