UPDATED REVIEW: I bought a PS3 after spending a lot of time researching the PS3 vs the XBOX and the Wii during the Christmas season of 2007, price was $499. Our family has used this system for a year now and we still love it, and are convinced we made the best purchase. The PS3 is the best of the 3 in my opinion. Our family already owns a GameCube and the Wii (other than the controller) really isn't that much of an improvement over the GameCube. The Blu-ray capability in the PS3 makes it a better system than the XBOX. The PS3 also has a 6-axis motion sensitive wireless controllers.

OK if you have already decided on the PS3, the next choice is which one to get. Do not buy the 40 GB version it is NOT backward compatible, meaning you can not play Playstation or Playstation 2 games on it. You can with the 80 GB version. Plus, with all the things you can do you are going to want the extra storage space.

The 80 GB player shiped with the MotorStorm game and it is a GREAT game. If you can still find this package deal you are in luck. Sony will change the package deal for 2008-09. UPDATE: Walmart was adding a $100 gift card on 8 Nov 2008 instead of a game!!

MotorStorm uses the 6-axis feature in the controler - you move your hands to increase your turns when you drive your motorcycle thru the mud. Yep, Wii isn't the only one with sensors in their controller. Sony's useage of the 6-axis technology is just more subtle.

Sony has a nice line-up of games to choose from and allows you to play on line at no extra charge. It is fun to be able to challenge my little brother in Guitar Hero 3, we live in different states - easy to access. Oh and the guitar for the PS3 is wireless, just like the controllers, using bluetooth technology so I can dance all over the room if I want to and not worry about getting tangled up and tripping over unsightly wires.

The best part is the Blu-ray DVD player (which plays the old DVDs as well) oh my! the TV never looked so good. You won't want to watch regular DVDs after you hear and see how good Blu-ray movies are. Many Blu-ray DVDs ship with an insert that is a disclaimer that reads something like this: this Blu-ray is made with the highest and latest industry standard if it won't play on your player you made need to upgrade your hardware etc... YIKES! If you spent $300 on a Blu-ray player it can get quickly get passed by with the every changing and updated technology. Not to worry if you have a PS3 - it easily connects to the internet and Sony will push software updates to your system, so you will always have the most up to date version of software - that is another reason to get the 80 gig bundle. You will have plenty of room for your game files and for your software update files.

Sony released software version 2.17 on 13 March 2008. This update includes Blu-Ray 1.1 I feel bad for folks who shelled out the bucks for a Blu-ray player and will have trouble watching the latest discs. Version 2.52 came out on 8 Nov 2008; another big update!

Sony makes it possible to download updates on to a USB device and then let the PS3 system read it from your device if you don't have it connected to the internet or wi-fi. See their website for details.

Highest marks for this system!

I just bought a PS3, after the HD Format war has finally been decided, and Blu Ray is the winner I figured if I were to get a Blu Ray player mind as well be a PS3 then I can play some games on it to. Mind you I have a Xbox 360 and have had one since launch. comparing the 2 systems they both have their Pro's and Con's. They both do High definition with their games. I have yet to be wow'd with the graphics in their games over the Xbox 360, but I hear in time it will be a difference.
Now in terms on their online there is no comparison. 360 has this down pat. PS3 is good, but nowhere near the calibur of the 360, and well worth the $50 a yr for xbox live. Now I have to say setting up your Gamertag for 360 was way more annoying than PS3, Luckily I just Migrated mine from my old Xbox and wasn't an issue, but I helped my friend with his and was annoying the process you had to go through.
Ok now with the menu system. I found the PS3 menu system to be very annoying and cumbersome to navigate through compared to the 360. Trying to setup the PS3 for HD and chating and stuff was much more involed than what the 360 entailed.
All in all it is a good system and worth picking up even if you just get it as a Blu Ray player, the games are not leaps and bounds over the 360 like Sony promised and a lot of the PS3 games only run in 720p while 360 games run in 1080i or 1080p. Definitely worth checking into.

  PS3 excellent Game SYSTEM!

The PS3 is an excellent system. Blue Ray player, good looking appearance, and nice graphics.

I have owned many systems, and game systems have come a long way. When the PS3 first came out, me and a couple of friends stayed overnight to get one. Some were for resale and one was kept for myself. Now that Blue Ray DVD players have gone down in price, us guys can't use the excuse that we are buying it just for the Blue Ray. Blue Ray DVD players at the time were any where from $800.00-$1000.00, so it was a really good deal to get a PS3. It still is a good deal because Blue Ray DVD players are selling for $300.00-$400.00. For another hundred, you can have a system that does it all.

This is by far the best system with no contenders.

  Sony PlayStation 3 80GB Ltd.Ed.MotorStorm Bundle

Overall,I give this product a 9/10,or a 4.5/5.0.
I like the look of the PS3,and the feel of the new 6-axis controller.
Especially,I enjoy the Blue Ray DVD,and all the features for the accessories are a big bonus too.
The changeability of the HDD is easy, and on my PS3 version the "Backwards Compatibility" is a huge success,as well.
Another key feature is the built-in wireless internet, and the free use of PS Underground !
As far as "Bang For Your Buck" goes,I wouldn't recommend any other system that's mass produced today as high as the PS3.
I've owned the major competitor of the PS3,-The XBOX 360,and the XBOX 360 Elite. Both Microsoft models leave the owner having to buy wireless internet hubs, and hourly,or monthly subscriptions for access to XBOX Live.
Also, the XBOX 360 is prone to general malfunctions, and suffers major heat problems.
Although the PS3 requires a look through the manuals to adapt the technologies to existing HD home technologies, and requires double the time to set the many functions found inside the framework of the PS3 Vs. the XBOX 360,it's worth it.
It's easy to see why the PS3 is the new game/entertainment system of choice !

  The last great system--Recommended version
Review created: 02/06/09
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This is one of the last great systems. It doesn't have the "emotion chip" in it (so it doesn't have 100% PS2 playback), but the software emulation allows most games to play bug free, unlike the rest of the PS3 systems that have released in the last 2 years. If you are an ultimate gamer, this is something to buy and prize. If all you need is PS3 gaming and Blu-Ray playback, save money and purchase a retail version on sale, BUT WAIT UNTIL APRIL 2009!!

Only the 60gb and 20gb versions came with the "Emotion Chip", which allowed nearly perfect PS2/PS1 hardware-based emulation. Only these originals featured chrome trim, and everything that's come since has had cheaper gray plastic.

Only the 80gb Motorstorm PS3s that have come since are capable of playing PS2 games, but it is software emulated, and will not universally play all games. ALL PS3 units are capable of playing the original PS1 games.

IF you are going to get a Playstation 3 and care about overall quality, invest a little more money in purchasing the 60gb version over ALL others--and invest the $40 in a squaretrade warranty.

NOTE: A PS3 price drop is expected in April of 2009--unless you want a 60/20gb PS3 for playback purposes, it is recommended that you hold off on your PS3 purchase until after this point in time.

I was not happy with this purchase. What could go wrong did go wrong. I had ask the seller to do a buy now for 450.00 and he said no. He said that was not enough to do a buy now. Then ask me to offer more and I said no. The bidding was to end Dec.10.2008 and when it did I still won but at 425.00. The sell sent me a email saying he would not send all that he said in the offering. I wrote him and told him I had made a good offer which he turned down. To end this the seller sent me back some of my money.I say some because 12 dollars and some was not sent back to me not all of the 425.00

It's heavier than the 40GB Sony PS3. However, it has more USB spots and more space in hard drive. In addition, it also has cards adapter. It can playback PS2 games at the same time. It's just a great PS3 system. Great 80GB!

Sony PlayStation 3 80GB with MotorStorm - great package
Review created: 04/01/08
by:
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I remember looking at the PS3 80GB MotorStorm bundle a number of months back and deciding to hold off on the purchase. At that time the HD-DVD vs Bluray war was still going on and I was pretty content with the games library on the 360. A lot has changed since that time....

The HD video war was won definitively by Bluray, which immediately made me reevaluated my need for a Bluray player. Second, the 80GB PS3 was becoming harder to find (although Sony has now announced a MGS Bundle with an 80GB PS3 coming in June) and I was interested in backwards compatibility with PS2 titles. Third, Sony's game library has strengthened with some notable PS3 exclusives that I was interested in - namely GT5 Prologue and HotShots Golf. I was also interested in giving MotorStorm and Resistance a try. The end result was it was time to buy a PS3.

I received my PS3 from the Ebay reseller. It was a new unit and arrived quickly and exactly as specified. I hooked it up via HDMI to my Yamaha receiver which thenn outputs to my Definitive Technologies 5.1 surround system and my Sharp 52" LCD. I also hooked up it to my home network directly via Cat5e. I purchased a Sony branded Bluetooth remote seperately which was a nice addition. I booted up the system and everything worked great.

I set up an online account with the PS Store and downloaded a few games and demos. Sony has a pretty extensive list of demo's available and I downloaded Uncharted and Heavenly Sword. Once you download them, you run through a bried install process. I also picked up a few games including Everyday Shooter and Stardust HD. Both are great. Everything worked well. The interface in the store is now quite as nice as the Xbox Live store, but a rework of the interface is coming soon.

I also downloaded some demos for the PSP. This is a great feature and worked really well. You hook your PSP to the PS3 via USB to transfer the title. I tried the demo for God of War: Chains of Olympus and Patapon - both worked great.

Next I tested the PS2 backwards compatibility. The 80GB PS3 is compatibility with most, but not all, PS2 titles. The 80GB PS3 uses a software emulator versus the hardware "Emotion Engine" found in the 60GB. Sony did this to try and cut production costs. I did not previously own a PS2 so I had a number of titles I was eager to try. I picked up the first God of War game, Final Fantasty XII, Wipeout Fusion and Gran Turismo 4. God of War, Finatasy XII and Wipeout Fusion all worked great with no difficulties. I had some problems with GT4, especially when switching to 1080i output - the game was cycle endlessly on the loading screens. I may be a bad disk as others have not reported the same problem.

I wanted to test the "remote play" features on the PSP. I wanted to play Final Fantasy VII on my PSP. To do this, you load the original PS1 disk into the PS3, and then via your network you tap into the PS3 with the PSP to play it remotely. It runs great! I have not tried any action games, which I heard can lag, but FFVII on PSP is now a reality for me. Videos also played great on the PSP when accessed in this fashion.

The PS3 functions really well as a Bluray player. It is very quiet and the picture quality fantastic via 1080p. No disappointment here.

Overall I'm extremely pleased with my purchase and the PS3 is the perfect compliment to my 360. I highly recommend it to anyone thinking of making the leap.

Sony PlayStation 3 80GB not better than 360 though

YOU CANT GO WRONG WITH THE PS3. But to me its not better than the xbox 360. It has BLU-RAY wow, but what about the gameplay and screen shots...

STILL NOT SOLD?

80GB NOT ENOUGH?? YOU CAN SWAP YOUR HARD DRIVE WITH ANY COMPATIBLE LAPTOP HD. BETTER YET IT DOESNT VOID WARRANTY. ITS EVEN IN THE INSTRUCTION BOOKLET.

BOTTOM LINE. THE PS3 IS A GREAT SYSTEM. YOU WONT HAVE TO KEEP TAKING IT BACK TO GET A NEW ONE...

What is the difference between Xbox 360 and SPS3?
Review created: 03/10/09
by:
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Sony and Microsoft, both notorious for pulling out all the stops, are going head to head with their latest game machines. Although not a gamer, I'm drawn to the PS3 and the Xbox 360 (and its new trimmings) as feats of hitherto unseen technological wonder. Both companies have bet recklessly on their platforms, and both see them as gaming plus a whole lot more. So while the gaming world has its own critiques — and while the Nintendo Wii continues to charm with its less performance-based attitude — my desire was to see what the Xbox and PS3 could do in the way of movies, music and other entertainment. I tethered both of them to a smokin' 46-in. Sharp 1080p high-definition LCD TV and let them rip.

Most gamers know that the PS3's delay was caused by its Blu-ray drive, and many suggest that the Blu-ray advantage isn't worth the price or the wait. Sure, movies on Blu-ray have a picture quality six times higher than a standard DVD, but the vast majority of so-called high definition TVs don't even have the 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution (known as 1080p) to show Blu-ray's full glory. From a home-theater point of view, though, the PS3 was not only the first Blu-ray player to be priced well under $1,000, but the first to be introduced from Sony, the mother of the Blu-ray initiative. In other words, for anyone who already has a sweet 1080p TV, or is planning to spend $2,500 or more to get one, the PS3 is almost a requirement, being one of the only reliable sources of full HD video.

If you don't know about Blu-ray, it's because it's not the only successor to the DVD. A few companies, including Microsoft, support a different standard for next-generation movie discs, called HD DVD. The conflict between the two formats has made it tough for consumers to make any decisions, so sales have been miniscule. But now that Sony's Blu-ray is appearing in Sony's eagerly anticipated PS3, Microsoft's HD DVD format is appearing in, you guessed it, Microsoft's Xbox 360. Okay, not "in" the Xbox-an accessory drive that connects to the console via USB has just gone on sale for $200. That brings the total for Microsoft's premium high-def-movie playing system to $600, the same price as the premium PS3.

I'm a big fan of high-definition TVs, even the more affordable 720p sets, and I can vouch for the fact that whether they're on Blu-ray or HD DVD, movies look much better than they do on standard DVDs. Pop in the Blu-ray edition of Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby that comes with the PS3, and you're blown away by the detail (and by how old and pockmarked Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly look up close). Likewise, load up the copy of Peter Jackson's King Kong that ships with the Xbox HD DVD player, fast forward to an action scene and suddenly, there are two T-Rexes and a gorilla duking it out in your living room. I can't spot the difference between Blu-ray and HD DVD movie; no one but the most finicky of videophiles could. So when looking at both game consoles as a source of high-def movie content, forget about differences in video quality and think more about your gaming preferences as well as the movies themselves, the Blu-ray and HD DVD lineups on Amazon.com or Netflix.

PS3 80GB All of them don't have memory stick slots.

I'm in the process of buying a PS3 80GB system and have studied them extensively. If the MSN begins with PS it will contain the slots for the memory sticks. If it begins with 98, it is newer and will not have the slots. It does have USB slot so you could put in a card reader. No big deal, just thought I'd mention it. The description on the sony site indicates that they are not putting the memory stick slots in anymore. The older ones are compatible with PS2 games the newer ones are not.

  We Love the PS3
Review created: 10/09/08

1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I bought this system on EBAY for my boyfriend's birthday. We have no children, this system is for adult play. I was concerned about the system being able to play games from previous systems. I was also concerned about making such a large purchase on EBAY (I have mostly stuck to clothing and cds). Last, I wondered if over-heating would be any issue as I had heard of some problems that both this and the new xbox console were having with heat.

We found a family on ebay who's children received the PS3 bought preferred the xbox system. It was an 80 gig with 2 controllers...for under $400.
Everything was beautiful and as described EXCEPT for one controller. It came broken. The seller insists it is the fault of UPS, but issued a modest refund to offshoot the cost of replacing it on ebay. We then tinkered with trying to fix it and ended up getting most of the buttons to work, most of the time. It will do for now!

The overall quality of this product is top notch. Faster, Brighter, Clearer than the PS2, this has been an excellent investment. Though we have not tried any PS1 games in the console yet, we have played a few PS2 games with NO PROBLEMS! The only difference is that it "creates" a PS2 memory card with its internal memory before you can start play. It stores the game info for you...we are able to play PS2 Gran Turismo just fine!

Thanks to the great deal we were able to get on EBAY, we bought the 80 and we are happy we did. We have been able to add our music and pictures to it and download intros to games (via its built in wi-fi). Give Echochrome a try if you like puzzles!

Though you can feel the heat its fan turns out, we have not had any over-heating issues.

One things I have noticed, is that the console will not charge the wireless controllers unless it is powered on. I can see why it makes sense, but it means leaving the PS3 on a lot more often than we'd like to. I know we can purchase a separate charger and we probably will.

I just wanted to share my specific observations and comments about the new system. I rated it Excellent. 5 stars.

  PlayStation 3
Review created: 09/16/08

1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The PlayStation 3 console arrived in great condition. The graphics of the games are great. There are a lot of PlayStation 2 games that are not compatible in which the information I read up on, says it plays all of them. That was one reason I wanted this item so I could play all of the games. After reading more information online and contacting the seller, I found out there were some games that weren't compatible. There was one concern I had and that was about connecting with the internet. I found out I could not connect with dial up or wireless at my home. I hope to try for wireless in another area. If that doesn't work, I will be disappointed with this console. I am glad that I have it other than the things I mentioned earlier that it doesn't produce. Thanks to the seller for their patience for answering my questions regarding this console. They are very helpful.
