This Sci-Fi classic really spooked me out when I was a 6 year old back in 1964 watching it for the first time. Stranded on Mars with only a monkey as a companion, a U.S. astronaut must figure out how to survive on the lifeless planet. Featuring impressive special effects for its time, as well as strong production values and lots of atmosphere, this one is great fun for fans of classic movie Sci-Fi. Filmed in Death Valley by famed cinematographer Winton C. Hoch and special effects master Lawrence W. Butler. Get ready for meteor showers, alien attacks and the ultimate fight for survival! This movie is released as part of the Criterion Collection, known for high quality DVD releases. Original Theatrical Release 1964. Get out the popcorn and have a great night of classic Sci-Fi fun! Wow seeing this movie was like going back in time .... way back when I saw the movie for the very first time at the "Drive-In" sitting in the front seat with my parents to get the best view. This time with high quality DVD the picture was so very much better not to mention the sound. I love this movie and could see it over and over. They don't make films like that anymore ... I love the new flicks but some of the older ones are just impossible to redo even with high tech. I have the VHS and purchased it from an Ebay Seller from the UK it was and still is a hard to find movie and now to have the DVD I am just thrilled. The SciFi lover will appreciate this movie as its the kind of story that gets the imagination going. Its a great family movie and needless to say if my DVD wears out I will search for another to buy. If you love the original War Of The Worlds, The Day The Earth Stood Still, Journey To The Center Of The Earth just to mention a few you will love this one too. I'll admit that there should have been a little more action, but overall it is good to see; just imagine yourself being stranded on a planet without another living soul and your supplies are extremely limited. Looking for oxygen as well as a source for food becomes all important for the pilot whose only companion is a monkey that was also sent on this mission. You will enjoy this film if you like adventure and life-threatening suspense! Review ID: 10000000011631092 Was this review helpful? If I could remember the sellers ebay name/ID, I would put it here so that others reading this would stay away from this "Bum". Review ID: 10000000008323921 Was this review helpful? One of my alltime favorite movies It was a DVD I waited for for many years ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Review ID: 10000000008003799 Was this review helpful? Report this review The DVD "Robinson Crusoe on Mars" is better than I expected being digitally remastered making an old Sci-Fi classic better than new & the service was great! The only complaint would be the wait but that is typical for shipping. Review ID: 10000000006718131 Was this review helpful? It is wonderful that there are companies out there who are making such things available. I only have very positive things to say - this was great! It was put out in 1964 and i remember seeing it as a young kid. But, i do remember it was great at the time. So i ordered and watched it again. It was great. Still!!! 44 years since it's make. There are similar movies made 20, even 10 years ago that dont even compare. This is a story of an astronaut forced to crash land on mars and the way he learns to survive. On mars? You ask. Yes. And all the questions of survival were answered very intelligently for 1964. It is one of those movies that will keep your attention throughout. So raid the fridge, before sitting down. I am proud to have it in my collection as i think a vast majority would be. Absolutely excellent fare for the 60's and beyond. Review ID: 10000000006040020 Was this review helpful? Report this review While I wish it had been remastered, the story and the special effects hold up well. Fans of Tom Hanks movie Castaway might enjoy this. The only gripe I have is the extras...pretty weak. A lot of stuff is from Ed Shrief's "Space Family Robinson" The audio commentary is a mess, jumbled sound bytes from people recorded years apart, most having nothing to do with what's on the screen. One thing we learn from the audio comments is that Byron Haskin was a grace-less, pompus ass. Otherwise, first rate! One more from my childhood list has been released, and nicely done too.
